Isle of Pines, the Jewel of the Pacific in New Caledonia

????

This gem of southern New Caledonia quite rightly claims the title of “the closest island to paradise,” a description often attributed to its northern counterpart, Ouvéa. Bathed in crystalline waters, l'Île des Pins is also an ocean of light with floating outrigger canoes that are the pride of its inhabitants, the Kuniés. A stay at the Isle of Pines is always a highlight and an unforgettable experience when you come to New Caledonia.
James Cook set down his anchor on its coasts in 1774. It was the English admiral who gave the island its name, due to its abundant New Caledonia pines with their characteristic slender silhouettes. The Island reminded him of its native Scotland (formely called Caledonia).

Accessible by boat or plane (and what a flight over the southern lagoon – a must!), the island has long been one of New Caledonia’s most touristic locations, without losing anything of its soul or authenticity!
The centre of the island is occupied by a slightly raised plateau whose highest point is N’ga Peak (262 m), which offers breathtaking views. The hike up to Pic N'Ga only takes one hour. As you walk, catch glimpses of native bird life and soak in the perfume of tropical flora. At the summit, your hard work is rewarded with panoramic views of the entire island and the never-ending blue ocean.
But l'Île des Pins owes its fame to its bays above all else.
The latter boast large beaches of incredibly pure white sand, like Kuto bay, as well as extraordinarily clear turquoise water where you can admire the remarkable marine flora and fauna, in Kanumera bay.
The Isle of Pines is also rich with animal life and is home to the world's largest gecko species.

The natural swimming pool of Oro bay: a legendary place
A stone’s throw from Oro bay is one of the island’s legendary locations: the natural sea water swimming pool. Separated from the bay by a simple barrier of rocks, this “swimming pool” is a gem of natural extravagance much loved by snorkeling fans. Nearby and allowing you to reach Oro bay, we recommend you take a walk along the slender river of sand at low-tide. Simply beautiful…
Framed by pine trees, this is a postcard-perfect sheltered turquoise bay full of coral and an astonishing amount of fearless tropical fish.

New Caledonia Travel Vlog

A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to be asked to be among a group of women to go to New Caledonia and work with Tourism and help raise awareness for the country/destination, as well as highlighting and learning about eco/ocean conservation.
It was 5 days, of adventure, fun, connection, femininity, ocean loving and exploring, nature walks, photography, story telling, story sharing, vulnerability, and humanity at it's finest.
There is something so indescribably raw and beautiful about being surrounded by pure feminine energy. it's both healing, and heart warming to be able to express and share so honestly and openly knowing that your sisters have your back, and are there for you, just as you are there for them.
This was an immeasurably powerful trip, and I am so honoured and thankful to have had the opportunity.

Thank you to Curvy (@curvycreative), New Caledonia Tourism (@Newcaledoniatourism) and @qantas for making it possible!

Here's how the week went down...
ENJOY!

Top 10 must-see while in New-Caledonia

????

Spectacular natural scenery, jaw-droppingly beautiful islands and a unique fusion of French and Melanesian culture make New Caledonia one of the true jewels of the South Pacific. In New Caledonia, nature does not conceal its pleasures. Idyllic beaches border the largest lagoon in the world, and thick forests are home to more than 3,000 native species; the French archipelago is a promise of the exoticness. Here is our top 10 must-see while in New-Caledonia!

???? The video features the following locations:

1. Upi Bay, Isle of Pines: The Isle of Pines is hardly lacking in magnificent bays, but Upi, if not the most visited, is undoubtedly the most spectacular. Discover its unique landscape on a traditional dugout canoe and follow the current to the stunning Isle of Pines, concealed between huge coral rocks that seem to float on the turquoise lagoon. Keep a lookout for turtles, rays and dolphins!

2. Amedee Lighthouse: No-one should leave Nouméa without visiting Amédée, the capital's most famous islet. It is home to an impressive 19th century metal lighthouse and a natural marine reserve known for its tropical fish and turtles. If you want to take a break from swimming and relaxing, the climb to the lighthouse offers an incredible 360° panorama over the lagoon and the coral reef!

3. Mouli Beach, Ouvea: Lined with stunning white sands, Mouli Beach is one of the best beaches in New Caledonia. Calm clear waters lap against the pure white sands, creating an ideal backdrop for a fun day out at the beach. Spend the day paddling and snorkelling, or set out on a walk along the beach’s long sandy stretches to admire the picturesque coastal destination in all its glory.

4. Natural Pool, Isle of Pines: The Oro Bay swimming pool is a natural aquarium, with translucent water and schools of multicoloured fish. This coral basin is sheltered from the currents, surrounded by New Caledonia pines and a beautiful white sand beach. It is easily accessible via a trail to the north of the Isle of Pines or from Upi Bay by dugout canoe.

5. Blue River Park, Great South: This is the most popular park in New Caledonia, undoubtedly the most incredible one. Located in the south of the Grande Terre, the Blue River Park promises a truly exotic scenery in a very unusual setting. Nature here has not changed for millions of years! It is also an extraordinary adventure playground with a wide range of activities!

6. Poe Lagoon, West Coast: The lagoon nature reserve, registered since 2008 as World Heritage by UNESCO, is an open-air aquarium where corals and colorful fish come together in a natural harmony. Diving enthusiasts will be amazed by the views in this clear water that has so much to offer. Kite surfers and windsurfers will be thrilled enjoying ideal conditions in the lagoon. For the bravest, discover the immensity of the lagoon from above with a skydiving jump!

7. Shabadran Terraces, Mare: To get to the site, visitors need to hike for around 2 and a half hours. Though a little strenuous (watch out for the very sharp coral!), the route offers stunning viewpoints over the coral plateaus and the island’s cliffs. When you finally reach the Shabadran terraces, you will understand why this unique white sandy beach has such an outstanding reputation. To discover with a guide!

8. Hen-shaped rocks, Eat Coast: It's impossible to miss the imposing black limestone rock that looms out of the waters of Hienghène Bay. Known as La Poule because of its striking resemblance to a hen, it has even influenced the legends of the local tribes, who made it the ancestral guardian of the region and one of the symbols of their country. To get a closer look and navigate around the surrounding Lindéralique rocks, a kayak is the way to go!

9. Giant Fern Park: The Giant Fern Park is made up of 4,500 hectares of protected rainforest. The Park also abounds with many species endemic to New Caledonia, most notably the iconic Cagou bird, which you can see in its natural environment. From a simple family outing through to thrills and adrenaline rush, the Giant Fern Park has a wide range of activities.

10. Heart of Voh: Immortalised by the famous photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand, this striking feature has been shared around the world. The Heart of Voh was formed naturally by the surrounding mangrove. Best seen from the air, a microlight is the ultimate way to take in this memorable sight!

EXPLORING the UNSEEN Side of New Caledonia - What You Didn't Know!

Discovering the secret 8th continent. According to scientists this is the secret 8th continent of the world: Zealandia...and according to the BBC, they only recently discovered its existence. Somehow New Caledonia is hated by many vloggers and even though its an island paradise, filled with stunning beaches and the local people are some of the most friendly people you could meet.
New Caledonia is France’s Australia, where they copied the English and set up a prison colony in an island far away.
It is a small island, so Noumea the capital is not the same as a large capital city that we are used to.

Explore the authentic East Coast of New Caledonia

????

Just like the rest of New Caledonia, the East Coast is abundant in incredible natural beauty. Lined with amazing coastal regions, peppered with fantastic diving spots and home to rich valleys perfect for hiking, it’s a corner of the archipelago that looks spectacular at any time of the year.
Much more than just a pretty face, the northern reaches of the East Coast also offer an opportunity to encounter and embrace the local Kanak culture. Enjoy an introduction to the arts and traditions of the Kanak people, visit a local village or delight your senses with the sights and sounds of a traditional show.

Top things to do on the East Coast:
- Kayak around the Hen and Sphinx: Situated in Hienghène Bay, the Hen and Sphinx are just two of the many black-stone rock formations scattered throughout the bay. Known locally as La Poule, the Hen earns its name from its chicken-like shape and a fascinating local legend, while the Sphinx’s resemblance to its Egyptian namesake is certainly hard to deny! While these intriguing rock formations are great to view from the shore, hiring a kayak and seeing them up close is another experience altogether. Paddle around these imposing natural figures and marvel in their sheer scale, with some rocks towering 60 metres above the waters below.

- Hike the Linderalique cliffs: If you’re looking for the perfect balance of breathtaking natural beauty and captivating culture, there’s no better place to start than Hienghène. Black-stone cliffs add a sense of drama to the landscape, while lush vegetation and the sparkling waters of the lagoon offer the perfect backdrop for swimming, snorkelling, hiking and a host of other activities.

- Ride the Ouaième Ferry: The last of its kind in New Caledonia, the Ouaième ferry acts as a link between the towns of Pouébo and Hienghène. Without a bridge to take vehicles to the opposing bank, cars and coaches are loaded on to a steel ferry and carried across the short stretch of water. Although the ferry ride may be quite short, the crossing offers some fantastic views of the native plantlife that lines the banks of the Ouaième River and out towards the lagoon. The ferry service is free to use and operates daily.

- See the beautiful Tao Waterfall: For those looking for the perfect excuse to cool down, soak up some great views and enjoy a touch of ethereal natural beauty, Tao Waterfall is just the ticket. Following a short drive north of Hienghène Village and a ferry crossing of the Ouaième River, an easy hiking trail (taking around 40 minutes to complete) will lead you from the main road to the waterfall. Enjoy a well earned dip on a warm sunny day or simply take some time to revel in the beauty of this incredible natural phenomenon.

- Explore Hienga Islet: Situated just 15 minutes off the coast, a visit to Hienga Islet is sure to leave you feeling worlds away from the daily grind. Currently uninhabited, the small island is surrounded by soft white sands and beautifully clear waters. Join a guided tour that takes you along the island’s underwater snorkelling trail and see the diverse marine species that call the area home, enjoy a stroll along the coast or simply take some time to sit back, relax and soak up the incredible scenery.

- Visit a local tribe: Local tribes will open their doors to you, providing an affordable, and unforgettable, accommodation option. While staying with a tribe, guests generally sleep in typical Melanesian huts set slightly apart from the family house. The clay or cement floor huts have mats for sleeping and a traditional hearth in the centre. Cooking and showering facilities are housed in separate buildings.

Kanak families welcoming you to their tribe will share their customs, their way of life and their know-how during your stay, allowing you to learn more about traditional life in New Caledonia. An experience quite unlike any other, the time spent getting to know the locals who call the archipelago home certainly won’t be forgotten any time soon. Look forward to activities such as traditional fishing, pandanus plaiting (making baskets, mats and more), preparing bougna (a traditional Kanak dish) and visiting yam plantations.

New Caledonia - Amedee Island, Isle of Pines & Noumea

Here's a short guide to New Caledonia. It is meant as a humorous take on my week here where I got to explore Noumea, Amedee Island and the isle of pines. Sadly there was a lot of rain, and I mean a lot of rain!

Amédée Island: A gem close to Nouméa

Located 40 minutes away by boat from Nouméa, the Amédée Isle is mostly called “le Phare Amédée” (the Amédée lighthouse) by the Nouméans. The lighthouse, surrounded by white sand, symbolises this place where activities are often held for tourists.
The site is exceptional, and admiring the view from the top of the lighthouse is highly recommended! After climbing the 247 cast-iron steps, you will be able to enjoy a breathtaking panorama over the beautiful turquoise water of the lagoon, the large reef, and the mountains of Grande Terre. A must!

The lighthouse a historic monument
Marking out the entrance of the Nouméa port through the Boulari channel, this lighthouse has a very unusual history! In 1859, the governor of New Caledonia decided to build a lighthouse on Amédée Isle, in order to make the access to the channel safer. At the time, such a construction seems impossible.
The lighthouse and beacon service recommended building a metallic construction, the plans were drawn up by Léonce Reynaud. He notably imagined the interior metallic structure separate from the exterior envelope, in order to better fight against effects of corrosion, worsened by the tropical climate. The lighthouse was completely assembled for verification, between July 1862 and June 1864, before being dismantled and transported to New Caledonia.

The highest metallic lighthouse in the world!
Inaugurated on November 15 1865, the lighthouse was originally lit with a rapeseed oil lamp. This system was replaced from 1952 to 1985 with a vaporized petrol system, before becoming electric. This tall metallic lighthouse, 56 m high, is equipped with a lantern with a range of 24.5 nautical miles (about 45 km). It is now the only remaining metallic lighthouse in France since the destruction of the almost identical Roches-Douvres lighthouse, in 1944. The Amédée lighthouse is considered the tallest of its kind in the world, along with the Lange Jaap lighthouse in Holland, inaugurated in 1822.

An exceptional marine reserve
The Amédée Island offers amazing underwater experiences. Located in the heart of a reserve protected from any type of fishing, you can observe a myriad of species, simply with a mask and snorkel. Snorkeling fans can enjoy swimming next to turtles, clown fish and other emblematic species of the Caledonian lagoon, a UNESCO heritage.

The Isle of Pines: the closest island to paradise

????
This gem of southern New Caledonia quite rightly lays claim to the title of ‘the closest island to paradise’. Bordered by crystalline waters, the Isle of Pines (l'Île des Pins) is bathed in the warm Pacific sun and dotted with outrigger canoes that are the pride of its inhabitants, the Kuniés. Close your eyes and breathe deeply: you really are on the Isle of Pines!
Abundant in natural beauty and breathtaking landscapes, a visit to the Isle of Pines, New Caledonia offers no better excuse to head out into the great outdoors and get back in touch with nature. From snorkeling, diving and swimming to sailing, hiking and captivating forest walks, there are no shortage of ways to while away the hours surrounded by nature in this magnificent corner of the archipelago. Whether you prefer to kick back, relax and unwind, or can’t turn down a physical challenge, you’ll find plenty of incredible things to see and do across the island.
The centre of the island is occupied by a slightly raised plateau, with its highest point sitting at N’ga Peak (262 m), offering breathtaking views of the area. While the peak is one of the island’s unmissable attractions, the Isle of Pines owes its fame to its bays above all else.
Large beaches of incredibly pure white sand, such as Kuto Bay, are scattered across the island, with extraordinarily clear turquoise waters home to remarkable marine flora and fauna just waiting to be discovered. If you’re dreaming of beautifully clear waters and stunning white sands, Kanumera Bay, Oro Bay and Upi Bay are good places to start.
Located just a 20 minute flight from Nouméa, the Isle of Pines is an easy addition to any New Caldeonian holiday. Encounter the island’s highlights during an unforgettable day trip from Nouméa or plan a stay at one of the island’s resorts and spend an extended visit relishing in all that makes the island so special, from its scenery and history to its warm and welcoming hospitality.
