Take a walk along the Rolwaling River in Rolwaling Valley, through the rhododendron forests of Dolakha district. And discover the trail to one of the biggest glacial lakes in the Himalayas, that may soon cease to exist.
Rolwaling Valley Trek is a high mountain valley trek that lies across the western border of the Khumbu region. The name Rolwaling means ‘valley carved by a plow’ and its steep cliffs do indeed give the impression of a plow-carved furrow. Manaslu Circuit Trek in Nepal With Tsum Valley - 2020
The Manaslu Circuit Trek and Tsum Valley is a trek in Nepal, which reaches an altitude of 5,100m at Larke Pass through the base of Mount Manaslu, the 8th highest mountain in the world. These unspoiled mountain valleys feature a mix of raw Himalayan nature and ancient Buddhist culture, with Manaslu and Tsum Valley offering the most striking and jaw-dropping scenery of the entire Himalayas.
You don't have to look far to find reports that overcrowding is a growing issue, both on Mount Everest and other classic trails in Nepal. However, the Manaslu and Tsum Valley remain off the beaten path and are among the least crowded treks in the western region of Gorkha Nepal. The trek also offers a lot more side-trips than any other base camp, although the majority of visitors would only explore the Manaslu circuit. However, with a pre-planned NEST Adventure, the team in Kathmandu has made it possible to explore the Himalayan landscapes and Buddhist culture of Manaslu with an additional side trip to Tsum Valley.

Manaslu Circuit + Tsum Valley Landslide | 04 - 18 October 2021 | 7 Weeks in Nepal Episode I
I travelled to Nepal over October and November 2021, just after the country lifted its Covid-19 quarantine requirement. My plan was to trek the Manaslu and Annapurna circuits, plus some deviations. My total time on trails was 42 days (excluding day treks from Pokhara and Kathmandu) of which 21 days were in restricted areas, requiring a guide; the rest of the time, I was on my own.
Episode I takes us around the Manaslu Circuit, where I also planned to visit the beyul of Tsum Valley. Manaslu and Tsum are restricted areas, where foreigners, apart from having to pay for permits, are obliged to engage the services of a licenced guide and travel in a group of at least 2 (though the latter can be circumvented).
I arrived in Nepal on 3 Oct 2021 and, the next day, travelled to the trailhead. Locals mentioned that the last monsoon season was particularly severe, resulting in much damage to roads and trails from landslides. The waterfalls were spectacular. So was the scenery. Friendly people steeped in culture, friendly dogs, and fluttering wind prayer flags lined the trails.

Tag 8: Wir sind am Ende des Tsum Valley Treks angelangt. Die Etappe gehört zu der härtesten des ganzen Treks. Zig Treppen gilt es zu erklimmen und wir müssen mit der Hitze klarkommen. Es ist ein hoch und runter. Von Chhokang Paro (3031 m) geht es zurück nach Lokpa (2240 m).
