National Park of American Samoa

This year we're visiting all 59 National Parks to celebrate the NPS centennial year and share the park love! National Park of American Samoa was #24. It's the only park in the southern hemisphere, it's the farthest in our travels and it's completely unique. Since the park doesn't have camping, we utilized its unique homestay program to stay for a week in Vatia village with a family. The village was surrounded by the park on all sides and we were constantly exploring the park right behind the house with the kids. Check out our video to see how we found our park through the beautiful land, cultures and mostly people of American Samoa!

THE OLD PAGO PAGO TRAIL | NATIONAL PARK OF AMERICAN SAMOA | BLUESKY COMMUNICATIONS SPONSORSHIP

We found a new trail!!

Our friends at the National Park of American Samoa have been hard at work, maintaining the existing hiking trails and clearing new trails too.

Today we're showing you The Old Pago Pago Trail. We started at the same trailhead as the Mount Alava Trail, but instead of taking the path most taken, we opted instead for the narrow, steep, and challenging path that meets back up with the main Mount Alava Trail.

This alternate route is about 0.7 miles long (one-way) and includes ropes, natural root steps, and a beautifully visible star mound (tia seu lupe).

We want to thank our sponsors- Bluesky Communications for their continued support of our channel and our island. We wouldn't be able to bring you these videos without their reliable services. Make sure to check out their services, devices, and accessories, including their IOT products.

WE SURVIVED THE MOUNT ALAVA ADVENTURE TRAIL | Hiking the National Park of American Samoa

We started hiking the Mount Alava Adventure Trail with partly cloudy skies, fresh legs, and energetic kids. A few rain storms, muddy legs, 56 ladders and 783 steps later, we made it to the summit of Mount Alava.

We lost the trail a few times, as the trail was incredibly overgrown and each time we thought we were almost there, we'd see another ladder ahead of us, we had to dig down deep and find the willpower to keep going.

But we finally made it, 3.5 hours later.

The hike back down was much faster, as gravity was helping us out and we were all ready for a treat, a shower, and a nap. haha

The Mount Alava Adventure Trail is challenging, both mentally and physically, but the reward of knowing that you conquered it is unbeatable.

ROPES, LADDERS, AND LOTS OF MUD | HIKING the MATAFAO TRAIL | NATIONAL PARK of AMERICAN SAMOA

Hiking the MATAFAO TRAIL has been on my bucketlist since we first moved to American Samoa. I always thought I would go without the kids, but we decided to give it a shot.

Matafao is the highest point on Tutuila, the main island of American Samoa, and the trail is definitely difficult. Combine mud and a rainstorm with this already challenging and treacherous trail and that could be a recipe for disaster.

See how our adventure turns out and if we were able to reach the summit.

A great bug THANK-YOU to the National Park rangers who cleared the trail and installed ropes and ladders to make the trail passable!!

Tofa Soifua.

National Park of American Samoa - Park #53

I spent my birthday flying halfway around the world to visit another National Park I hadn't been to yet, National Park of American Samoa. It was my 53rd park out of the 63 at the moment. A very long 27 hours of travel to get there, I spent 2 nights on Ofu and then a quick afternoon on Tutuila as I prepared for the 2 days of travel to get back.

Island Hop the Pacific National Parks: American Samoa, Hawaii Volcanoes & Haleakala

Chimani Releases Individual Free Mobile App Travel Guides For Hawaii Volcanoes, Haleakala, and National Park of American Samoa

App developer seeks to help reduce waste by replacing traditional park guides with mobile apps

Portland, Maine – Chimani, Inc., in partnership with Subaru of America, has announced the launch of 59 mobile app travel guides – one for each of the 59 iconic national parks, including each of Pacific's iconic national park destinations – in celebration of the 2016 National Park Service Centennial.

The national park apps by Chimani not only serve as a powerful park navigation tool to help visitors explore some of the country’s most beautiful areas, but also eliminate wasteful paper guides that end up in waste landfills. Subaru has partnered with Chimani to support the development of these new apps and to help educate visitors on the importance of reducing waste in national parks.

“We began developing the national park apps in 2010 to address the need for better access to park information, while also understanding the cellular connectivity issue most parks face,” said Kerry Gallivan, CEO and Co-Founder of Chimani, Inc. “Each of our national park apps includes curated, original content covering hiking trails and unique points of interest, park facilities, and more; along with GPS-enabled maps that work without a cell or Wi-Fi connection.”

“We’re extremely excited to release the free apps for American Samoa, Hawaii Volcanoes, and Haleakala national parks” said Gallivan. “Our tremendous partners at Subaru have lead the way for waste reduction in parks, and by replacing paper travel guides, Chimani will help them accomplish this goal.”

Subaru, a premier partner of the National Park Service Centennial, is deeply committed to protecting the environment and helping keep U.S. national parks beautiful. The company operates the first automotive assembly plant in America designated as zero landfill (Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc.), which has also been named a Backyard Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. Subaru is sharing its zero landfill expertise to help the national parks find ways to reduce waste and educate consumers on how they can help.

“As we enter the one hundredth year of the national parks, Subaru remains as committed as ever to help park visitors make the most of their trips to our national treasures, while also educating them on the need to keep them clean and beautiful for the next generation,” said Alan Bethke, senior vice president of marketing at Subaru of America. “Chimani is a terrific partner that offers Subaru the opportunity to do both through their new national park apps.”

Each of the 59 national park apps and the flagship National Parks app by Chimani, which includes an overview of all 412 national parks, are available for free download in the App Store, Google Play, and Amazon Appstore.

About Chimani, Inc.

Chimani, Inc. ( creates apps for national parks and the outdoors. Chimani’s growing suite of apps includes guides to Acadia, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, and all 59 National Parks. Chimani was recently chosen by Google to be one of nine app developers to partner in its new app-indexing program.

About Subaru of America, Inc.

Subaru of America, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. of Japan. Headquartered at a zero-landfill office in Cherry Hill, N.J., the company markets and distributes Subaru vehicles, parts, and accessories through a network of more than 620 retailers across the United States.
