WOWOWOW! Have you ever heard of Nan Madol? It's my favorite place in the Pacific Islands so far (and top 10 site in the world).

Nan Madol is an ancient city built some 2,000+ years ago out of volcanic rock and sea coral on the Eastern shore of Pohnpei island in the country of Micronesia ???????? It’s something like Angkor Wat but on the middle of a remote island...

It was a place for royalty gatherings as well as the burial site for the king and queen. I honestly hadn’t heard about it until a week ago when my friend mentioned it to me in Nauru, and I am completely blown away by what I have seen here. My friend and I were we were the ONLY ones around to explore and it is just fascinating.

Have you ever heard of Nan Madol before? Add it to your list!

Nan Madol in Pohnpei, Micronesia

Nan Madol is an archaeological site adjacent to the eastern shore of the island of Pohnpei, now part of the Madolenihmw district of Pohnpei state in the Federated States of Micronesia in the western Pacific Ocean. Nan Madol was the capital of the Saudeleur Dynasty until about 1628. The city, constructed in a lagoon, consists of a series of small artificial islands linked by a network of canals. The site core with its stone walls encloses an area approximately 1.5 km long by 0.5 km wide and it contains nearly 100 artificial islets—stone and coral fill platforms—bordered by tidal canals.

The name Nan Madol means spaces between and is a reference to the canals that crisscross the ruins. The original name was Soun Nan-leng (Reef of Heaven), according to Gene Ashby in his book Pohnpei, An Island Argosy. The ruined city is one of today's great archaeological enigmas and is sometimes called Atlantis, the eighth wonder of the world, or the Venice of the Pacific.

The ancient stone city#nanmadol#funfact #micronesia #amazingfacts

Did you know? Nan Madol, located in Micronesia, is often referred to as the Venice of the Pacific due to its intricate network of canals and islets.

But here's the kicker: Nan Madol was built entirely of massive basalt stones, some weighing up to 50 tons each!

Imagine, these structures were constructed without the use of wheels or metal tools, baffling archaeologists to this day.
So, next time you're marveling at ancient wonders, remember Nan Madol, a true testament to human ingenuity!

LOST ANCIENT CITY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PACIFIC OCEAN REVEALED IN NEW SATELLITE IMAGES
In the centre of a lagoon on the remote island of Pohnpei, a series of mysterious canals, stone foundations and ruins have earned Nan Madol the name: Venice of the Pacific—or even Atlantis. The city of ruins are over a millennia old but thanks to new technology and aerial images of the site the city is more accessible than ever, according to the Science Channel's series 'What on Earth?' Satellite images of the complex show 97 geometrically similar shapes on the island’s coastline. Their purpose is unclear and little is known about the city’s original inhabitants. The local name translates to “the space in between,” referring to the canals formed in between the rectangular-shaped islets, but it could also have a more ominous interpretation—there are numerous reports of ghost sightings near the site. Part of the mystery around Nan Madol is linked not only to its age but also its location. Sitting on Micronesia’s Pacific coral reef coastline, the city developed in solation, around 2,500 miles from Los Angeles, California and around 1,600 miles from the coast of Australia. According to the Smithsonian Museum, Nan Madol’s curious architecture comprises of a hefty 750,000 tonnes of black rock, meaning that the people behind it must have moved 1,850 tonnes every year.
