Kathmandu Food Tour I HUGE Thakali Thali + BEST Noodle in Nepal + Sekuwa BBQ + Tibetan Street Food

► Subscribe to Delhi Food Walks:

As a part of our maiden international food exploration, we have arrived at Nepal, a small yet ravishingly beautiful country with a rich cultural heritage, incredibly friendly and fun loving populace and fascinating food traditions. The country combines magnificent views of the Himalayas, temples, quaint hill villages and flourishing wildlife watching to offer one of the world's great travel destinations. Our first culinary destination here is the capital city Kathmandu. We are on a gastronomic tour of this endearing city with our gracious host Kamal Bhatta. Kamal is a filmmaker and a food enthusiast. He shares a deep bond with this quaint city. We are immensely grateful for his inputs and guidance.

Our first food stop was a roadside stall in the marketplace at Kathmandu Durbar Square serving a basic breakfast fare comprising of dry potato sabzi, fried eggs and dry black chana preparation. This wholesome combination is the preferred food of the working class masses.

From their we went to have the famous Thakali Thali at Thakali Bhanchha Ghar. It is a set menu from the Thak Khola region of Mustang, Nepal. This quintessential platter consists of 7-8 items like rice, black daal, dhedo(cooked buckwheat dough), lightly spiced meat, aloo bhujuri, saag (spinach), chicken gravy, gundruk and an assortment of pickles.

Next Kamal took us to the Boudha area where there is this huge Boudhanath Stupa. Being a Tibetan establishment, the dominant food here is the Tibetan food. So we went to Khawa Karpo Tasty Noodles factory for plate of hot and delicious in house noodles. Here we first saw the preparation of the noodles from scratch and then tried a plate of freshly made noodles with shredded omelette. It was simply one of the best noodles we ever had.

Next was the turn of Zomsa restaurant for this popular breakfast dish called Ponche which is a well made, soft bao filled with cooked minced meat.

From there we arrived at CD Laphing center which reportedly serves the best Laphing in the city. This Tibetan delicacy is loved for its warm, spicy and comforting taste. The yellow coloured Ala were more delicious than the plain Laphing. Both were served with soya sauce, chilli oil etc.

We then headed on to have another Tibetan delicacy Ashabhaley. It was a variation of the Shabaley which is mostly fried. But this pan roasted dough parcel stuffed with a mildly flavoured minced meat mixture was quite yummy. The fun part was the juices from the meat that had drenched the mince.

Our final destination of the day was a very popular place named the Yangtaru Sekuwa corner. The kitchen was a hub of barbecue where marinated pieces of chicken and pork were being grilled on trays kept inside closed ovens. The indigenous grilling technique results in the most toothsome barbecue meat. It is a must try if you are here for food. We thoroughly enjoyed the soft, succulent and meaty chicken sekuwa and chicken wings.

The day was super gratifying. Watch out for other parts in this series.

About the host - Anubhav Sapra:

Trying Nepali Snacks for the First Time! (PART 2)

Part 2

20 UNIQUE Street Foods in Kathmandu, NEPAL | Nepali & Indian Street Food | Nepali Food Tour ????????

What’s fun about Kathmandu is the amazing food diversity the city has to offer. Kathmandu is an incredible foodie destination.

We spent two full days hunting for the best street food in central Kathmandu, NEPAL. This time, we’ve covered Asan, Basantapur (and Kathmandu Durbar Square) and New Road.

There are hundreds of dishes and food items there. And it can be quite overwhelming and difficult to enjoy the Kathmandu food scene if you don’t know what you’re looking for and most importantly, where to look.

Here are the 20 street foods you absolutely must try in Kathmandu.

For our breakfast, we went to Asan. We had:
1. Jeri, also known as Jalebi in India, an orange deep-fried sweet in a pretzel shape.
2. Gwaramari, a Newari round bread.
3. Malpuwa (or Malpua), a pancake deep-fried in sugar syrup.

Then, we went to Indra Chowk. We had:
4. Lassi, a traditional curd / yoghurt drink from India.

For lunch, we had:
5. Mixed Chatamari, usually referred as a Nepali pizza but the one we had was like a crepe style or galette style (galettes are the salty version of crepes).

We went to two small (secret) Khaja Ghars near the newly rebuilt Kasthamandap to eat:
6. Anda Keema, a Newari dish, it’s a delicious egg steamed served in a small bowl with keema under the egg and curry on top.
7. Aloo Paratha, a roti (flatbread) stuffed with potatoes.

We headed to Aunty Sekuwa Corner for the best:
8. Chicken and Buff Sekuwa, a Nepali barbecued-style chicken or buff marinated in spices and cooked in wood fire.

At Narayan Dai ko Masangalli ko famous Momo, near Kathmandu Durbar Square, we tried:
9. Buff momo, Nepali steamed dumplings.

Then, we went to New Road to try:
10. Kachori Chaat, a spicy deep-fried puffed pastry filled with lentils crushed and mixed with many ingredients such as dahi (curd), chilli, onions, tomatoes, achaar, spices, …).

A week later, we came back to New Road to have breakfast. We had:
11. Puri Tarkari, a puffy bread served with a bowl of vegetable curry.
12. Chole Bhature, a bowl of spicy chickpeas with Bhature (huge puffed bred).
13. Rasmalai, a cottage cheese patty soaked inside a sweet milk cream.

We also wanted to try the trendy:
14. Chocolate Pani Puri, an empty deep-fried crispy dough ball filled with chocolate and whipped cream.

We found one small Khaja Ghar and tried:
15. Samosa, a triangular deep-fried pastry filled with spicy potatoes, peas, onions and other ingredients.
16. Samosa Chaat, a Samosa crushed and and mixed with many ingredients such as dahi (curd), chilli, onions, tomatoes, achaar, spices, …).

Then, our friends, Nissim and Sumeet, joined us. We had:
17. Pani Puri, an empty deep-fried crispy dough ball filled with a special mixture.
18. Dahi Puri, Pani Puri with Dahi (curd).

They brought us to a very secret place near Makhan Tole and we tried an amazing:
19. Chatpate, a mixture made of puffed rice, waiwai (instant noodles), herbs, spices, peanuts, tomatoes, cucumber, onions, lemon, chili

We ended our tour with style with a very unique:
20. Meetha Paan, betel leaves filled with many ingredients that were totally unknown to me.

$5 Nepali Street Food Tour in Kathmandu, Nepal???????? | Nepali Food Reaction

Untuk subtitle Bahasa Indonesia, tekan CC kemudian pilin pengaturan dan pilin Indonesian.

Don’t miss this episode! In this video, we walk the streets of Kathmandu, Nepal in search of the true taste of Nepali Street Food! We find a variety of foods, snacks, and drinks by just weaving around the bustling city streets. Just when we think we can’t eat anymore, we find another place we “must try.” We go to at least seven places on this self-made food tour. All we did was google the top street foods to try in Nepal, and then we looked on google for places with good reviews. Along the way, we also stop at any place that looks and smells good! When you hit the streets with us, anything goes! We never know what exactly we are getting into, but usually ends with full bellies and a sleeping baby.

We were backpackers before having kids, and luckily we get to continue sharing our love for backpacking with our kids. If you love hiking and want to hike with your kids, Nepal is a great destination for your family.

Lhasa, Tibet - Lhasa is one of the most important cities in Tibet, and a home of Tibetan food and culture. In this video we’re going on an ultimate Tibetan street food tour of Lhasa, and additionally we’ll visit the Potala Palace and some of the most significant cultural sights in the city. Let’s start eating Tibetan food! #Lhasa #Tibet #TibetanFood #streetfood

Potala Palace - To begin the morning we started off visiting the Potala Palace, a fortress dzong, with tombs, chapels, and assembly halls, and once the seat of the Dalai Lama. Today it’s still used as a monastery, and a school for Tibetan Buddhist monks. The magnitude will blow you away.

Tibetan Tea House - One of the best parts of culture in Lhasa is the tea house culture. There are big teahouses all over the city, and local Tibetans congregate to drink tea, eat Tibetan food and socialize. I tried some yak noodles, both yak and vegetarian momos, and both sweet and salted tea. Tibetan yak noodles - 6 RMB ($0.84) per bowl

Tibetan Teahouse #2 - Located just off Barkhor Street, on this Tibetan street food tour, we then went to another teahouse, this one probably the largest and most well known local spots in Lhasa. The ambiance was incredible, so vibrant and so energetic. Since I had just had yak noodles, we chose to try some friend noodles and tea, and soak in the Tibetan culture.

Dzomo Cheese - Hybrid between yak and cow - Next we tried some dzomo cheese on the streets of Lhasa, very good and slightly animaly.

Laping noodles - Price - 5 RMB ($0.70) per bowl - One of my favorite of all Tibetan street foods is laping, a type of noodle, sliced off, then mixed with chili oil and spices. It’s the perfect light and flavorful street food snack.

Legendary Yak Momos - Price - 1 RMB ($0.14) per piece - On the corner, just outside the Barkhor Street circle, is a famous yak momos hole in the wall restaurant. The momos were hot and fresh, made right before you order them, and they were some of the best yak momos I’ve ever had.

Cheese Fungus Soup - 6 RMB ($0.84) per bowl - Dolma mentioned that this Tibetan cheese fungus soup is rare to find nowadays and during this season, so we were lucky to find it. It ate like a porridge and was hearty and filling.

Jokhang Temple - Barkhor Street - One of the most important places in Tibetan Buddhism and in Lhasa is Jokhang Temple, and people often walk 3 circles around the temple each morning and evening.

Tibetan Food Dinner - Finally for dinner, it wasn’t really street food, but it was a local Tibetan style dinner where we tried a number of Tibetan dishes. My favorite was the pickled preserved radish stir fried with yak meat.

It was an amazing day in Lhasa, Tibet, lots of delicious Tibetan food, and a chance to learn a lot about Tibetan culture.

Thank you to Travel China & Tibet ( they sponsored my trip to Tibet, and they did an amazing job to cater to the exact things I wanted to do. Highly recommended when you visit Tibet.
