Surviving the volcano, Montserrat

A selection of images David uses in his talk based on his conservation work on the island of Montserrat, when the 'extinct' volcano suddenly burst into life. This triggered the first evacuations. David witnessed the first eruption up close and personal.
There is no narration, so you can safely turn down the volume if you don't care for the backing music.

Soufrière Hills Volcanic Monitoring Montserrat

Dr. Adam Stinson, Volcanologist at the Montserrat Volcanic Observatories keeps 24/7 watch on the mountain. Soufrière Hills volcano is considered one of the most watched and monitored on planet earth. Montserrat is located close to St. Kitts, Antigua, and Nevis in the West Indies.

A visit by EU officials to assess how the European Union would respond to the emergency caused by successive volcanic eruptions. The mission was accompanied by the Governor Frank Savage. Highlights of the visit were a tour of Plymouth covered in volcanic ash and a helicopter ride to the top of the mountain. The EU contributed to housing for those displaced, and considered alternative sites for an airport.

Montserrat, the new Pompeii - Plymouth, the ghost capital

Montserrat was a green paradise lost in the blue of the Caribbean sea. But it was without counting with the furious and terrible Madame Soufrière !
Three times the south and east of the island were ravaged by the volcano, burying the pretty white town of Plymouth with tons of burning ashes. Since then, cut in half, Montserrat has been monitoring the volcano, which is still roaring and threatening.
And Plymouth, the new Pompeii, has become the only ghost capital in the world of a two-faced island.

Music : Tristan Lohengrin : The end of the world.

Montserrat Carabbean volcano. Jean-Jacques FERON

Following the destruction of Plymouth, more than half of the population left the island because of the economic disruption and lack of housing. After a period of regular eruptive events during the late 1990s, including one on June 25, 1997 in which nineteen people died when they were overtaken by a pyroclastic flow, subsequently for a number of years the volcano's activity consisted mostly of infrequent ventings of ash into the uninhabited areas in the south. The ash falls occasionally extended into the northern and western parts of the island.

Montserrat

A Slide show of the once beautiful, but now devastated island of Monserrat. I had a chance to visit in 2000 shortly after the volcano destroyed over a third of the island and see the volcano actually erupting. Must see eruption photos near the end.

Dave's Story from the Montserrat Volcano Half-Marathon

Dave Keener tackles the exceedingly tough Montserrat Volcano Marathon course for UncommonCaribbean.com and shares his experience.

Montserrat Exclusion zone

In this video we tour some parts of the exclusion zone that has been re-opened. We walk into houses that have been abandoned, a hotel, a Museum, and a Factory. All of which is slowly being taken over by nature. Once the roof starts leaking on these buildings, it's not long after that the real decaying starts.

Montserrat ACTIVE volcano, Plymouth rooftops on the bottom left. The day that we passed offshore, the volcano was in an active state which resulted in a marine exclusion zone being established. The net result for us was we had to remain at least 2 miles offshore as we passed by.

When the volcano is quiet for some time they will allow you into the Exclusion Zone to see the horrible destruction it caused.

Montserrat Tribute

Montserrat was home for us for 11 years from '95-'06, but it was time for us to fly away in '07. So, we post some of our favorite pictures taken over those years as a tribute to the beauty of Montserrat and Montserratians. Our thanks to ARROW for the music and for being a good neighbor.
