Marietas Islands Hidden Beach - How to get there

Marietas Islands Hidden Beach - How to get there

To get to the hidden beach, you can take a boat from Sayulita or from Punta Mita, Nayarit. Be ready to swim through a cave in very cold water. It is worth it. Right now it's only open from Wednesday to Sunday.

It's a protected National Park surrounded by whales and blue leg birds. The beach in the crater has an uncertain origin. Some people say it was a military area and the craters were made by bombs. But no one really knows. The whales love that area. Because it's safe to give birth and teach their baby whales the ropes.

Thank you for watching :)

Islas Marietas, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Hidden Beach

My twin brother, Joe, and I took a boat cruise on the Chica Locca to Islas Marietas just off Mexico's west coast, near Puerto Vallarta. The islands are known for having a hidden beach behind a rock wall that can be swam to. I wasn't able to get much footage of that, unfortunately. The rest of the trip was all inclusive food, booze, and activities like snorkelling, banana boat, paddleboarding, and water slides. We tried to catch up to a whale that we saw too.
The cruise with Chica Locca was well worth the money and we had loads of fun.

Islas Marietas (a hidden beach INSIDE the island!?)

Welcome to one of the most beautiful places in Mexico, the Marietas Islands!
Sponsor a video

In today's Puerto Vallarta vlog we go to the incredible Islas Marietas and we even get to visit the famous Playa Escondida inside of the island! After living in Mexico for over three years, it was about time we took this amazing tour! If you are looking for something to do in Puerto Vallarta, booking a tour to the Islas Marietas is a great option!

Some tour companies may tell you that you are going to visit the Hidden Beach (Playa Escondida), however many people may not be completely truthful with you. Book with Carlos (link below) and he will make sure your ticket includes access to the hidden beach. There is a strict limit on the number of people that can visit this beach each day so be sure to book in advance.

Book a tour:

Tour notes:
-The tour was from 9-5
-Open bar on your way back from the islands
-Includes snorkeling, access to Cactus beach, and food and drinks
-Bring sunscreen and a towel
-Swimming to the hidden beach was more difficult than we expected. If you don't feel comfortable in the water, this may be challenging for you.
-The snorkeling wasn't amazing, but both beaches made the trip well worth it!

If you don't want to visit the hidden beach, the tour would still be a blast! Plus you will save a little money :)

Brazil Travels: Rio de Janeiro - DJI Phantom Drone GoPro [Part 3]

[Part 3] Rio De Janeiro was the 3rd and last stop in our Brazil Travels tour. Rio is filled with vibrant beaches, striking backdrops and a whole lot of south american spice. With so much to experience, it was hard not to fall in love with Rio.

We stayed in Ipanema just a few blocks from the beach. By day we sunbathed and wore our best touristy pants by exploring famous landmarks such as the Selarón steps, Christ the Redeemer and Sugar Loaf mountain. By dusk, we adventured up into the colorful favela's and danced to samba while overlooking the most gorgeous views of the city.

Mexico Travels: Nuevo Vallarta, Marietas Islands - Hidden Beach, Sayulita - DJI Drone GoPro

We don’t typically go the resort route but a little treasure of an island caught our eye online a few months ago so we decide to try something different.

The Hidden Beach is inside a sinkhole located on Marietas Islands. You can get to the the Hidden Beach / Marietas Islands from a few places including Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita and Punta de Mita.

From talking to locals we learned that there used to be no restriction on how many people could visit the Hidden Beach per day, unfortunately the beach became trashed with beer cans and carne asada pollution (direct quote from a taxi driver), so the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) put the island on time-out for some cleanup and preservation work.

Getting to this beach was challenging on many levels but we made it and it was so worth it. With day trips to Sayulita and Puerto Vallarta on the side, this trip did not disappoint.

Marietas Islands Puerto Vallarta Nuevo Vallarta Mexico hidden Beach las islas marietas

Marietas Islands Puerto Vallarta Nuevo Vallarta Mexico hidden Beach, las Islas Marietas whales Protected from the intrusion of the world outside, the hidden beach of Marietas Islands las Islas Marietas, Puerto Vallarta is a world of its own. Located just a few miles off the coast of Mexico, close to Bandera bay, Marietas Islands are archipelagos that were formed as a result of volcanic activity. The islands have remained almost secluded ever since. It was only recently that the recreational aspect of the place was discovered following the development of an extremely exclusive marine ecosystem that makes this place just as unique as thrilling.
The marine environment of hidden beach Marieta Island, Puerta Vallarta has developed over several years, sans any disturbance from humans or outside nature. As a result, the marine life here is intriguing and holds a huge potential for people who love just this kind of sport. Marietas Islands are one of the best sports for snorkeling and scuba diving owing to the virgin nature of the place, along with its diversity.
The water along the hidden beach in Marietas Island, Puerto Vallarta is a crystal clear blue mass of pure bliss. Of the marine wildlife available to view in the place, Humpback whales, sea turtles and dolphins are just a few of the most magnificent examples. Travelers can also enjoy a powerboat trip to the hidden beach, Marietas Island, and Puerto Vallarta taking in the scenery along the way. The hidden beach, Marietas Islands, Puerto Vallarta is an intriguing site in its own accord. The beach remains cut off from the rest of the group of islands. And for those who stumble across the place, the surprises held are immense. The beach is considered to possess an abundance of reef fish, with about 103 different species moving around in the clear blue waters of the beach. The whales can also be viewed in their magnificent glory and for some lucky travelers; they may even get to experience the 'whale- music'- unique sound made by these huge creatures just as they dive deeper into the waters. Following winter rains, Puerto Vallarta weather remains pleasant and inviting. The rains also make the water as clear as available on any beach n the world. The accommodation comes easy and in a wide range for all kinds of travelers. While the hidden beach, Marietas Islands, Puerto Vallarta is still hidden mostly in the literal sense, the rest of Puerto, Vallarta is a reasonable commercial place receiving tourists from all over the world in large numbers. The Marietas Islands were originally formed many thousands of years ago by volcanic activity, and are completely uninhabited. The islands are about an hour-long boat ride west-northwest from the coast of Puerto Vallarta and are visited daily by hundreds of tourists, yet no one can legally set foot on the islands. In the early 1900s, the Mexican government began conducting military testing on the islands because no one lived there. Many bombings and large explosions took place on the islands causing amazing caves and rock formations to be created. After a massive international outcry, started by scientist Jacques Cousteau in the late 1960s, the government eventually decided to label the islands a national park and therefore protected against any fishing, hunting or human activity. Marietas Islands was Re-Discovered in 2012 by Ventura Orozco Osorio shared thru his popular social Media and made Puerto Vallarta one of the most booming hotspots in all of Mexico. the rest is Paradise.

DAY FOUR of our family vacation in Mexico in partnership with Grand Palladium Vallarta Resort and Spa Andros and I head to the Marietas Islands which are right off the coast from Puerto Vallarta. We went to the Marietas Islands in search of the hidden beach.

The only way to get to the beach is to swim through a cave. We had two wait two hours for the tide to go down enough for us to get into the cave. You only have 30 mins from the second your group jumps in the water until you have to get back on your boat.

It is now one of my favorite beaches I have ever visited!

Isla Marietas-Hidden treasure beach!puerto vallarta mexico.Full video including cave swim/lion rock!

Las Islas Marietas refers to a group of uninhabited islands located about 35 kms northwest of Puerto Vallarta and a visit to the islands is a very popular day trip among visitors in Vallarta. Even if you’ve never heard of them, chances are you’ve come across an infamous aerial photo of it’s jaw-dropping, hidden beach.

Many bird enthusiasts come to the islands to see the blue-footed booby. Others come to visit the elusive hidden beach in search of that perfect photo. Some even come to scuba dive, snorkel and explore the diverse marine life. We’re not scuba divers or bird watchers but we’re budget travelers and our goal was to see Las Islas Marietas on a budget!

Las Islas Marietas On A Budget
A panga parked at Punta de Mita beach
HOW TO GET THERE

Although many day trips to Las Islas Marietas depart from Puerto Vallarta, the distance means you’ll be on a boat for over an hour before you can spot the islands. A more enjoyable (and much shorter) boat ride is from Punta de Mita. The islands are only about 8kms off the coast of Punta de Mita and you’ll save both time and money by starting your trip here.

Punta de Mita is a very small and quiet beach town and home to many luxurious resorts (for those that are not budget travellers!). If you have time to explore the Vallarta area, it’s a great place to visit and so are the neighbouring beach towns of Sayulita and San Pancho. Punta de Mita has one main road (Avenida Las Redes) that leads you to the beach called Playa Anclote. You’ll find a hotel and a few beach side restaurants and this is where you’ll be able to hire a panga to take you to Las Islas Marietas.

Las Islas Marietas on a Budget

From Sayulita:

We had been spending a few days in Sayulita and it took a bit of backtracking but it was relatively easy to get to Punta de Mita. From the main station in Sayulita, take a bus headed towards Puerto Vallarta/Bucerias and let the driver know you’re going to Punta de Mita. You’ll have to get off at Bucerias and the driver can tell you where to cross the street and then wait at the bus stop on the other side of the road for a bus heading to Punta de Mita. In total, it took about 45 minutes from Sayulita to Punta de Mita. You can also hire a taxi and fares are listed at the main square in Sayulita.

Las Islas Marietas On A Budget
Our first views of the beach
From Puerto Vallarta:

Punta de Mita is about an hour northwest of Puerto Vallarta. A car rental will give you greater flexibility to explore the coast but, with a bit of planning, you can get to Punta de Mita by bus too. In front of the Walmart parking lot beside Galerias Vallarta Shopping Mall is where you’ll see a busy bus stop. There is often a man helping locals and tourists get on the right bus so don’t be afraid to ask. An ATM (Autostransportes Medina) bus will take you to Punta de Mita but you can also take a white and green Compostela bus. Compostela buses run frequently and go all the way to Sayulita so you’d have to get off at Bucerias and then get on another bus to Punta de Mita. Ask the drivers, we found they were very helpful!

The buses that service these towns are more comfortable than the local Puerto Vallarta buses but are not luxurious by any means. Expect a bumpy ride. There’s no wifi or entertainment but you may get lucky with A/C. Depending on the distances travelled, fares range from $20 to $35 pesos per person – way cheaper than a taxi or car rental!

Las Islas Marietas on a Budget

WHEN TO GO

As early as possible. Do not snooze. Do not linger at breakfast. Just go as early as you can. My biggest piece of advice would be to arrive EARLY. Like most popular tourist attractions, the crowds at Las Islas Marietas are coming and it’s only a matter of time before the big tour boats from Vallarta make their way to the islands. Some arrive as early as 11am so it’s worth getting up early to beat the crowds. You can always nap on the beach later! And if you’re hoping to see whales along the way, December to March is the season when humpbacks visit the bay to give birth.

Las Islas Marietas On A Budget
Clear blue waters at Las Islas Marietas
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

If you want to explore Las Islas Marietas on a budget then hiring a ‘panga’ (small fishing boat) from Punta de Mita is the way to go. Tour companies can charge over $100 CAD for a day trip to the islands and, if you’ve been following us, you know that’s out of our price range for an afternoon. I knew there had to be other alternatives but, after searching online, the cheapest I could find was about $60 CAD – not cheap enough for us!

Because of this, we arrived to Punta de Mita with a maximum budget in mind of $600 pesos each. Turns out, our first offer was for only $400 pesos! And with a bit of haggling, we got it down to $350 pesos each (January 2016). This included transport to and from the islands and the cost of a Semarnat wristband that would allow us to access the protected area of the islands. There were no fancy meals, music or
