Riding the iron ore train in Mauritania was one of my wildest adventures to date. This is the world's longest train, and it transports iron ore from a mine in the Sahara, to the city of Nouhadibou on the coast of Mauritania. You can ride it... at your own risk ???? This film was shot at the beginning of January 2020, before the pandemic.

The longest train in the world in Sahara Desert. Amazing Journey!

There’s a nervous and hectic biding among local people

A little later they will get on the longest train in the world

When the 2,5 kms long train comes, sheep herds and belongings are embarked firstly.

Then the 600 kms long trek begins.

Train’s primary objective is to carry iron ore from Zouerat city on the northwest part of Mauretania to Nouadhibou city on the southwest.

On each wagon, there is 83 tones of in ore entrained in iron mine in Zouerat.

The train goes loaded and comes back empty. The round trip journey takes 20 hours going and 15 hours returning back.

Journey is totally free of charge.

For the sheep also…

Air temperature reaches up to 45 degrees C during daytime, while it decreases down to 10 degrees C at night.

Heavy clothes and headscarfs are protecting people from both heat and cold.

But it’s not only the change of temperature which affects them. Sand storms and iron filings make it hard also.

Some passengers are going for visiting their relatives, while some are going for shopping.

The sheep will be sold in livestock market.

When this trek in the longest train in the world ends, everybody is covered with rust and dust.

This is probably my favorite adventure that I've ever taken. And I did it with my good friend Thomas, from @YesTheory. We hitched a ride on a 20-hour ire ore train, that travels across the Sahara Desert of Mauritania. It's the world's longest, heaviest, and most dangerous train, and let me tell you, it was the experience of a lifetime.

I've been wanting to take this train ride ever since my first trip to Mauritania in 2019. And after Thomas invited me, I couldn't help but say yes.

Thank you for watching, and stay tuned for more videos across this incredible West African nation called Mauritania!

Mauritania’s Railway Journey Through the Sahara | WIDE | FULL DOCUMENTARY

Mauritania is a Sahelian country that, after fighting terrorism, is returning to life. One of its proudest achievements is the iron train, which transports iron ore to the Atlantic. A source of income for the entire country, 90% of which is desert and has been independent since 1960. For writer Olivier Weber, travelling on these wagons is a way of meeting desert workers and shopkeepers back in their villages. And at stopovers, to live with nomads and the lords of the dunes.

The Mauritanian Sahara offers landscapes that are unique in the world, with its ergs, its gigantic monoliths so dear to Théodore Monod, its thousand-year-old oases and the legendary town of Chinguetti, with its ancestral library and exceptional manuscripts.

The Sahara Desert Railway - Mauritania #1 - One of The World's Longest and Heaviest Trains

SNIM (Société Nationale Industrielle et Miniere) operates the 704 Km / 437 mile railway in Mauritania, which transports iron ore from mines at Zouerate in the North East to Nouadhibou on the West coast. The railway was built in 1963.

The trains can have up to 4 EMD diesel locomotives pulling over 200 fully laden ore wagons, weighing over 17,000 Tonnes and over 2 Km in length. The EMD locomotives have been specially adapted to cope with extreme heat and desert conditions. They are of the types:-
SD70-ACS
SDL40-2
GDL-15T

CC 123 + CC 122 - EMD SD70-ACS, Co-Co, 4,500 Hp, V16 Diesel Electric. Specially designed for extreme heat and desert conditions. Built for SNIM in 2011 as part of a batch of 6. Seen here pulling 180 loaded wagons of Iron Ore - 84 Tonnes each. Clips filmed between F'Derik and Choum.

World's deadliest train.

The Mauritania Railway is the national railway of Mauritania. Construction of the line began in 1960, with it opening in 1963. It consists of a single, 704-kilometre (437 mi) railway line linking the iron mining centre of Zouérat with the port of Nouadhibou, via Fderik and Choum. The state agency Société nationale industrielle et minière (SNIM) controls the railway line

World Longest Train! Where is my Train! film travel

World longest train, the train long 3 kilometers (1.9 Miles) and the railways is 738 kilometers long.

Trains on the railway are up to 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) in length,[6] making them among the longest and heaviest in the world. They consist of 3 or 4 diesel-electric EMD locomotives, 200 to 210 cars each carrying up to 84 tons of iron ore, and 2-3 service cars. The total traffic averages 16.6 million tons per year.

Passengers are also occasionally transported by train; these services are managed by an SNIM subsidiary, the société d'Assainissement, de Travaux, de Transport et de Maintenance (abb. ATTM). Passenger cars are sometimes attached to freight trains, but more often passengers simply ride atop the ore hopper cars freely. Passengers include locals, merchants, and occasionally some adventure tourists. Conditions for these passengers are incredibly harsh with daytime temperatures exceeding 40 °C and death from falls being common.[citation needed]

In January 2019, the railway resumed tourism after a ten year hiatus; part of the track ran through a forbidden tourist area. One of the stops on the tourist route is an iron mine. The tourist route is typically operated by a locomotive carrying two passenger carriages.

History of rail transport in Mauritania
The line was a success and provided a major portion of Mauritania's GDP; as a result the line was nationalised in 1974.[ Following Mauritania's annexation of southern Western Sahara in 1976, the line came under constant attack by Polisario militia, effectively putting the line out of use and thereby crippling Mauritania's economy. This played a major role in prompting the army to overthrow Mauritanian president Moktar Ould Daddah in 1978, followed by a withdrawal from Western Sahara the following year. With the line now secure, repairs were conducted and trains starting using it once again in the early 1980s. This railway is unusual for its usage of the Soviet type coupler SA-3, which is quite rare in non ex-Soviet countries.

Since the closure of the Choum Tunnel, a 5 km (3.1 mi) section of the railway cuts through the Polisario Front-controlled part of the Western Sahara (21.354867°N 13.012644°W).
