Madagascar: A Country Full Of Breathtaking Nature | Somewhere On Earth

Madagascar is one of the worlds largest islands, red from the colour of the earth, and full of tropical life. We meet Elysee a botany student with a fascination for her country’s national tree: the baobab. Soloda is a vaso, which is a group of nomadic coastal inhabitants who lives in an isolated village on the Mozambique channel. And Gil, a Frenchman has lived on the island for over 20 years, and has made his home in the foothills of the mountains working on reforesting the valley where he lives.

Lemurs of Madagascar HD

Lemurs are primitive primates known as pro-simians, or pre-monkeys. They live in large female-dominated family groups, in sharp contrast to most other male-dominated primate societies. Native only to the island of Madagascar, lemurs resemble the oldest ancestors of primates.

Lemurs, and most of the wildlife on Madagascar, have been isolated for tens of millions of years. In fact, 80% of the wildlife found here exists no where else on earth. When man first arrived in Madagascar about 2000 years ago from Indonesia, he hunted lemurs for food. The largest species, including one the size of a gorilla, are now extinct. Of the 53 varieties of lemurs known to exist here, we were able to film during our three week visit.

The Tropic of Capricorn 8 of 20 - Madagascar - BBC Travel Documentary, recorded 14.03.2009

Simon Reeve presents a travel documentary as embarks on a journey along the Tropic of Capricorn, the line of latitude which cuts through Southern Africa, Australia and South America.

In the four-part BBC2 series Tropic of Capricorn, broadcast in 2008, Simon followed the southern border of the tropics region around the world.

While filming Tropic of Capricorn, Simon travelled through Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Mozambique, Madagascar, Western Australia, the Northern Territory, Queensland, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil.

The journey took him to stunning areas of the world, but it was also a chance for spontaneous discoveries about the changing global environment, poverty, globalisation, AIDS, the rise of the Chinese economy and the suffering of Africa.

Antarctica: Tales from the End of the World

Antarctica is remote and inhospitable, yet one of the world’s most beautiful landscapes. Only by icebreaker can we reach the continent and Southern Ocean’s stormy isolated islands. Seals, Emperor penguins, seabirds and numerous other animals live and breed here, defying the life-threatening environment of the vast ice desert.

The history of Madagascar. Madagascar documentary. World Of Knowledge

Madagascar , officially the Republic of Madagascar , and previously known as the Malagasy Republic, is an island country in the Indian Ocean, approximately 400 kilometres off the coast of East Africa across the Mozambique Channel.

At 592,800 square kilometres Madagascar is the world's second-largest island country.

The nation comprises the island of Madagascar and numerous smaller peripheral islands.

Following the prehistoric breakup of the supercontinent Gondwana, Madagascar split from the Indian subcontinent around 88 million years ago, allowing native plants and animals to evolve in relative isolation.

Consequently, Madagascar is a biodiversity hotspot; over 90% of its wildlife is found nowhere else on Earth.

The island's diverse ecosystems and unique wildlife are threatened by the encroachment of the rapidly growing human population and other environmental threats.

The archaeological evidence of the earliest human foraging on Madagascar may date up to 10,000 years ago.

Human settlement of Madagascar occurred by Austronesian peoples, arriving on outrigger canoes from present-day Indonesia, where the contemporary social and religious situation was that of Hinduism and Buddhism, along with native Indonesian culture.

These were joined around the 9th century AD by Bantu migrants crossing the Mozambique Channel from East Africa.

Other groups continued to settle on Madagascar over time, each one making lasting contributions to Malagasy cultural life.

The Malagasy ethnic group is often divided into 18 or more subgroups, of which the largest are the Merina of the central highlands.

Until the late 18th century, the island of Madagascar was ruled by a fragmented assortment of shifting sociopolitical alliances.
