LUXEMBOURG: Castle of Vianden

The recently restored Castle of Vianden is set spectactularly on the rocks above the town. It has become a museum.

The castle was built between the 11th and 14th centuries and became the seat of the counts of Vianden.

It was further developed until the 18th century but with the departure of the Counts of Luxembourg to the Netherlands combined with the effects of fire and an earthquake, it slowly deteriorated.

The final blow came in 1820 when William I of the Netherlands sold it to a local merchant who in turn sold off its contents and masonry piecemeal, reducing it to a ruin.

There were several attempts at restoration but these were hampered by problems of ownership.

Not until 1977, when Grand Duke Jean ceded the castle to the State, was it possible to undertake large-scale work, most of which has now been completed.

Places to see in ( Paris - France ) Luxembourg Palace

The Luxembourg Palace is located at 15 rue de Vaugirard in the 6th arrondissement of Paris. It was originally built to the designs of the French architect Salomon de Brosse to be the royal residence of the regent Marie de' Medici, mother of Louis XIII of France. After the Revolution it was refashioned (1799–1805) by Jean Chalgrin into a legislative building and subsequently greatly enlarged and remodeled (1835–1856) by Alphonse de Gisors. Since 1958 it has been the seat of the French Senate of the Fifth Republic.

Immediately west of the palace on the rue de Vaugirard is the Petit Luxembourg, now the residence of the Senate President; and slightly further west, the Musée du Luxembourg, in the former orangery. On the south side of the palace, the formal Luxembourg Garden presents a 25-hectare green parterre of gravel and lawn populated with statues and large basins of water where children sail model boats.

After the death of Henry IV in 1610, his widow, Marie de Médicis, became regent to her son, Louis XIII. Having acceded to a much more powerful position, she decided to erect a new palace for herself, adjacent to an old hôtel particulier owned by François de Luxembourg, Duc de Piney, which is now called the Petit Luxembourg and is the residence of the president of the French Senate.

Marie de Médicis desired to make a building similar to her native Florence's Palazzo Pitti, and to this effect had the architect Métezeau (either Louis Métezeau or his brother, Clément Métezeau) sent to Florence to make detailed drawings of the building. Marie de Médicis bought the Hôtel de Luxembourg and its fairly extensive domain in 1612 and commissioned the new building, which she referred to as her Palais Médicis.

In 1750, the palace became a museum, the forerunner of the Louvre, and was open two days a week until 1779. In 1778, the palace was given to the comte de Provence by his brother Louis XVI. During the French Revolution, it was briefly a prison, then the seat of the French Directory, and in 1799, the home of the Sénat conservateur and the first residence of Napoleon Bonaparte, as First Consul of the French Republic.

Luxembourg Palace and Gardens - Paris

The Luxembourg Palace and Gardens is a beautiful oasis in the middle of one of the world's most beautiful cities. The Palace, built beginning in 1611, took 26 years to complete. It is used today as the meeting place for the French Senate. The 60 acre park is the second largest park in Paris. It is located in the Latin Quarter near the Pantheon.

Luxembourg Palace & Garden (Jardin du Luxembourg) - Paris, France

The Jardin du Luxembourg is the name given to the spacious garden area, which also includes Luxembourg Palace; in addition, continuing south, is a separate area known as Esplanade Gaston Monnerville. While the palace is no longer open to the public (it now houses the French Senate - Sénat - Palais du Luxembourg), there is no admission to see the garden.

As is to be expected, on a beautiful sunny day, the area is full of people enjoying the weather, some simply sitting and relaxing, while also people watching. The Medici Fountain is one of the highlights and very relaxing as well. The sheer size of the entire garden area captivates you immediately. It was our last day in Paris and a perfect way to end our week-long vacation.

Like many of the other magnificent buildings and palaces around Paris, and indeed elsewhere in France, one can only marvel at the amount of planning, money, labor, and resources that must have gone into erecting this massive palace, and into landscaping and maintaining the stunning gardens on which the palace and other buildings stand.

Today, the palace building is the home of the French senate. During my brief three of four hour visit to the palace grounds, I did not enter the main building itself. In fact, I'm not even sure if the building is open to the general public. However, the beautifully maintained gardens are open, and during my outing they were well patronized by locals and international visitors alike. There is much to see around the grounds including a series of statues of former French queens, saints and reproductions of classical Antiques.

You can wander through an orchard of apple and pear trees, enjoy a performance of the théâtre des marionnettes (puppet theatre), ride on a vintage carousel, enjoy one of the many free musical performances scheduled throughout the summer months, and visit the Orangerie with its displays of art, photography, and numerous sculptures. The grounds of the garden also contain more than one hundred statues, monuments, and fountains scattered throughout the 25-hectares (61 acres), including Frédéric Bartholdi’s first 1870 model for the Statue of Liberty.

BBSN: The Fascinating Beauty of Chateau de Versailles, Luxembourg Palace and Parc de Belleville

Exploring Paris:
1. Château de Versailles or The Palace of Versailles was the principal royal residence of France from 1682, under Louis XIV, until the start of the French Revolution in 1789, under Louis XVI. It is located in the department of Yvelines, in the region and province of Île-de-France, about 20 kilometres (12 miles) southwest of the centre of Paris.
A simple hunting lodge and later a small château with a moat occupied the site until 1661, when the first work expanding the château into a palace was carried out for Louis XIV. In 1682, when the palace had become large enough, the king moved the entire royal court and the French government to Versailles. Some of the palace furniture at this time was constructed of solid silver, but in 1689 much of it was melted down to pay for the cost of war. Subsequent rulers mostly carried out interior remodeling, to meet the demands of changing taste, although Louis XV did install an opera house at the north end of the north wing for the wedding of the Dauphin and Marie Antoinette in 1770. The palace has also been a site of historical importance. The Peace of Paris (1783) was signed at Versailles, the Proclamation of the German Empire occurred in the vaunted Hall of Mirrors, and World War I was ended in the palace with the Treaty of Versailles, among many other events.

The palace is now a historical monument and UNESCO World Heritage site, notable especially for the ceremonial Hall of Mirrors, the jewel-like Royal Opera, and the royal apartments; for the more intimate royal residences, the Grand Trianon and Petit Trianon located within the park; the small rustic Hameau (Hamlet) created for Marie Antoinette; and the vast Gardens of Versailles with fountains, canals, and geometric flower beds and groves, laid out by André le Nôtre. The Palace was stripped of all its furnishings after the French Revolution, but many pieces have been returned and many of the palace rooms have been restored.

In 2017 the Palace of Versailles received 7,700,000 visitors, making it the second-most visited monument in the Île-de-France region, just behind the Louvre and ahead of the Eiffel Tower.

2.The Luxembourg Palace It was originally built (1615–1645) to the designs of the French architect Salomon de Brosse to be the royal residence of the regent Marie de' Medici, mother of King Louis XIII. After the Revolution it was refashioned (1799–1805) by Jean Chalgrin into a legislative building and subsequently greatly enlarged and remodeled (1835–1856) by Alphonse de Gisors. The palace has been the seat of the upper houses of the various French national legislatures (excepting only the unicameral National Assembly of the Second Republic) since the establishment of the Sénat conservateur during the Consulate; as such, it has been home to the Senate of the Fifth Republic since its establishment in 1958.

3. The Parc de Belleville is located on the hill of Belleville, its 108 metres making it the highest park in Paris. At the summit of the park, an almost thirty-metre tall terrace provides a panoramic view of the city. The park was conceived by the architect François Debulois and the landscaper Paul Brichet. It was inaugurated in 1988.

The park offers 1200 trees and shrubs, a 100-metre-long waterfall fountain (the longest in Paris[2]), and 1000 m² of lawn accessible to the public. It also contains a wooden playground for children, ping-pong tables and an open-air theatre. At the top of the park lies the Maison de l'Air, a small museum designed to educate visitors to the importance of fresh air and to the problems of pollution.

The park also prides itself on its display of annual flowers. The gardeners prepare the flower beds two years in advance, in tight collaboration with the horticultural center of Rungis. Their compositions have received prizes numerous times at the Concours des Décorations Florales Estivales (Summer Floral Decoration Competition), which takes place each year in September.

Palace of Luxembourg Walking Tour

The magnificent and inspiring Luxembourg Palace in Paris, France. This video opens before you the majestic building of the palace.

Built in the style of late classicism, Luxembourg Palace attracts attention with its exquisite architectural style and interior decorations. The video will let you see every detail of this magnificent building, from its exquisite façade arch to the graceful statues and sculptures that adorn its spacious gardens.

Luxembourg Palace got its name from its historical origin and connection to the Luxembourg family. It was built in the 17th century by order of Marie de Medici, widow of King Henry IV of France. Marie de Medici was an Italian princess of the Medici family who became Queen of France in 1610. She decided to build this palace in the style of her ancestral residence in Florence, Italy - Palazzo Pitti.

Marie de Medici gave the palace the name Luxembourg in honor of her family palace, which was located in Luxembourg, now the capital of Luxembourg. This name was chosen as a symbol of her origin and respect for her family.

Thus, the name Luxembourg was given to this palace in Paris to reflect the connection with the Luxembourg family and the connection with the historical heritage of Marie de Medici.
