Lisbon Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia

Lisbon – Welcome to the capital of Portugal. Explore the hilly streets of this coastal city and take in the rich culture here. Check out the top spots to visit.

When ready, browse vacation packages to Lisbon:

From a Phoenician outpost to 16th-century trading giant, from the Great Earthquake of 1755 to its glorious reconstruction, #Lisbon has long been a city of shifting fortunes.

On a #visit to the waterfront, find the city’s grand gateway, Praça do Comércio. Pass beneath the triumphal arch, a tribute to the city’s reconstruction, and on to Rua Augusta to another of Lisbon’s great squares, the Rossio.

Climb aboard Tram 28, which passes some of the city’s most iconic sights, then climb the battlements of Castelo de São Jorge to see the red-tiled roofs of Lisbon spread out before you.

Although the Great Earthquake reduced much of Lisbon to rubble, the ancient suburb of Alfama was spared. Lose yourself amid the cobblestones, where cafes, bars and artisan shops have taken residence in the dockworkers’ homes of old.

A #vacation here will reward you with some of Europe’s most beautiful beaches.

For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.

Lisbon Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Lisbon in Portugal.
Lisbon is a white city located on Portugal’s River Tejo and is flamboyantly beautiful and full of melancholy, and also lively and bursting with colourful joie de vivre. The Praca Dom Pedro is more commonly known as the Rossio. At the northern end of the square is a former palace that has been transformed into a national theatre. The main square was once the setting of bull fights and up until 1820 and the Spanish Inquisition so called heretics were burned at the stake. The medieval Sé Patriacal Cathedral stands defiantly on a hillside. Following the Christian conquest the city’s bishops’ church was built on the foundations of a former mosque to commemorate victory over the Moors. On the city’s highest hill is the marvellous Castelo De Sao Jorge. Since times immemorial this fortified complex has stood guard above the mouth of the Tejo. Little remains of the former Moorish royal residence in which Vasco Da Gama´s journey to India was once celebrated. Electricos is the name of Lisbon’s unique trams that travel noisily through the old town They are an indelible feature of the city and negotiate the city’s twisting alleys like an ancient roller-coaster within streets so narrow that pedestrians are forced to seek refuge in the nearest doorway. On the banks of the Tejo on the outskirts of the Belem district is the Mosteiro Dos Jeronimos. This superb historical building with its snow-white façade and adornments and figures in playful Manuelistic style dominates the entire city. Lisbon continues to be Portugal’s unchanged treasure right up to the present day.

SINTRA, PORTUGAL | How To Visit Sintra As A Day Trip From Lisbon (Travel Guide)

Sintra is located 30 kms to the west of Lisbon, in the center of Portugal. Home to ancient castles, extravagant palaces, and beautiful natural scenery, Sintra is an absolute must-visit. In this video we’ll show you how to visit Sintra as a day trip from Lisbon, including how to get there and the highlights that you can’t miss.

???? Getting to Sintra from Lisbon
The cheapest way to get to Sintra is by train. The train leaves from the Rossio Train Station in downtown Lisbon once or twice per hour. It takes about 45 mins to get to Sintra. We took the train at 9 AM, which allowed us enough time to visit the three main highlights. It is best to leave as early as possible, however, the castles only open their doors at 10 AM. Once you arrive at the train station, you will have many options to move around the town. You can either take a bus, a taxi, tuk tuk, or walk.

???? Stop 1: Quinta da Regaleira
How to get there: 30 mins walking / 10 mins by taxi / 434 bus to Sintra Town + walk another 12 mins
Time needed: 2 hours

Sitting at the outskirts of Sintra’s historic center, the Quinta da Regaleira is easily walkable from the train station. It takes about 30 mins to walk there and you have nice views of the town center, flowers, and the Sintra National Palace on the way. Quinta da Regaleira was mainly designed by the Italian architect Luigi Manini in the late 1800s and is a shockingly beautiful estate. You can walk around a romantic palace, chapel, and a lush park that features the famous Initiatic Well, grottoes, and towers. We found the gardens especially peaceful. We recommend visiting this spot first because it’s less touristic and you’ll find fewer crowds during the morning.

???? Stop 2: Castelo dos Mouros
How to get there: 16 mins by taxi / 434 bus from train station
Time needed: 2 hours

Located on a high rocky mountain above the town, the Moorish Castle is a spectacular site. To get here, we walked back to the train station and caught the 434 bus. With the bus ticket you can hop on and off as you please for the day. Alternatively, you can also take a tuk tuk or taxi from the center, which will save you more time at the ruins. The fortification itself was built in the 10th century during the time the Moors occupied the area. Its strategic position helped defend both the surrounding territory and the maritime access routes to the city of Lisbon. It is fun walking on the castle walls and taking in the unique views over the town and the Atlantic Ocean.

???? Stop 3: Pena Palace
How to get there: 3 mins by taxi / 15 mins walk
Time needed: 2.5 hours

For your last main stop of the day we recommend the famous Pena Palace and Park. It’s only a 15 mins walk from the Moorish Castle and it’s less crowded at the end of the day. This is the most famous attraction in all of Sintra for a good reason. The Palace stands in a 200 hectare park, filled with colorful flowers, small ponds, and beautiful viewpoints. Once you step inside the palace itself, you’ll be amazed by the blend of vibrant colors and beautiful architecture. You can also explore the interior and get an idea for the history of this palace, which once served as a holiday residence for the Portuguese royal family.

Lisbon: What NOT to Do in Lisbon, Portugal

Tourist information on visiting Lisbon, Portugal. From what to do like visit Mosteiro do Jeronimos, having pasteis de Belem and eating like a king, but also what you should not do when you visit Lisbon. From scary taxi rides, seven hills you will walk up, and wondering why people are trying to sell you random stuff on the street, this is one of my favorite and most thorough city travel videos.

Hi there! My name is Anna and for the last couple of years I have created visual diaries of all my travels around Europe in search for great coffee, cozy places, delicious foods and off the beaten path attractions. And I want to share them with all of you....All of my experiences and adventures – curated from my experience and honest personal reviews.

I strongly believe that experiencing a city does not lie in checking off attractions, but in feeling the vibe of the city wandering through their unpopular streets, seeing the locals go about their day and eating alongside them in their local places.

And with these goals in mind, I wanted to create off the beaten path travel itineraries for other like-minded travelers to have as guides -- so that you don't experience the hassle of researching and compiling information and so that you have every information in just one place on your phone.

Thank you for joining me on these adventures and if you like my visual diaries, please subscribe and let me know what you think in the comments. I would love to hear your feedback and it would greatly help me on my journey to providing useful and requested information on off the beaten path spots in Europe. :)
