The mysterious Lifou Island

????

A visit to Lifou, the largest of the incredible Loyalty Islands is sure to be one that you won’t forget. This mysterious island is a natural wonder, from immaculate beaches to steep cliffs, thick tropical rainforests and deep caves.

Lifou is formed from raised coral covered in dense scrubland.
Towering over the ocean at a height approaching 60 meters in places, the Jokin cliffs are made from layers of ancient, compressed coral stone formed over millions of years. Concealed at their feet, Kiki Beach is a real hidden gem. After a half-hour walk through the forest, you will discover a piece of Eden with sugar white sand and an emerald water.

Lifou's beaches are long stretches of postcard perfection. Sand as soft as baby powder and waters as blue as the lapis lazuli is an invitation to lie down and being sun-kissed on the paradisiac beaches such as Peng Beach or Luengoni Beach.

Lifou will also give you the opportunity to engage in rewarding experiences -
Native culture still thrives in Lifou. The Melanesian people on the island follow a meaningful traditional way of life in harmony with nature. Discover their culture by visiting one of the traditional huts —most are private but a few are opened to visitors. You may even be invited to try the native dish bougna, a tasty stew combining crab and island yams cooked to perfection in banana leaves. The dish is sometimes served with chicken instead of seafood and often contains sweet fruits like taro or pawpaw.
Lifou has been blessed by the nature above and under the sea. Snorkel the pristine coral gardens is a lifetime experience where you will see some of the 2000+ different species of marine animals.

Secret grotto: Experienced divers can explore the long corridor of underwater caves off the coast of Lifou with a guide, while novices can keep to the rich and colourful Gorgone Reef.

Lifou - Part 1. Walking up to the Notre Dame-de-Lourdes Chapel on Lifou Isle

On our recent visit to Lifou Isle in New Caledonia we decided combine a walk up to the Notre Dame-de-Lourdes chapel, a visit to the caves where there is a swimming 'pool' and then check our the sealife with a swim from near the jetty rather than opt for a tour from the ship.

We found this a great way to spend a day on Lifou without incurring too much cost and it turned out to be a lot of fun. The walk was a beautiful stroll with lovely views whereas the caves provided an opportunity for a 'leap of faith' into the swimming pool.

The crystal clear sea right by the jetty was also a great place for a spot of snorkeling.

This video turned out to be quite long so we have split it into 2 parts which, conveniently, are a leisurely activity in Part 1 and a more adventurous activity in Part 2.

We hope you enjoy our videos of a fantastic day on Lifou Isle

Lifou New Caledonia Royal Caribbean Shore Excursion 4K

Lifou New Caledonia Royal Caribbean shore excursion 'Legend of the Seas' Pacific Cruise 4K
Lifou [lifu] is a commune of France in the Loyalty Islands Province of New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean.

Lifou is made up of Lifou Island in New Caledonia, the largest and most heavily populated of the Loyalty Islands, its smaller neighbour Tiga Island, and several uninhabited islets in between these two. All these islands lie among the Loyalty Islands, 190 km (120 mi) to the northeast of New Caledonia's mainland. At 1,146 km2 (442 sq mi), Lifou Island is the largest atoll in the world.
The town of Wé, on Lifou Island, is the administrative centre of the commune of Lifou as well as the provincial seat of the Loyalty Islands Province.

The first Europeans to have contact with Lifouans were whalers, who had very limited, and certainly not friendly, communications with them. Sandalwood traders also came to New Caledonia around 1841.

By the mid-19th century, there were Anglican missionaries at work on Lifou, although there had been natives and Polynesian immigrants doing religious work before then. In 1843, French Catholic missionaries arrived on Lifou; shortly afterward, the Anglicans and Catholics became involved in a religious war that lasted until the French takeover of Lifou in 1864. The missionaries even established a school on Lifou Island, and from 1840 to the early 20th century taught most of the population to read. They did enough religious work that in 1998 the Lifouans were referred to as devout Christians.

Lifou is a popular cruise port, with many cruises coming from Australia. The most common port-of-call is Easo; the ships anchor just off the island and tender passengers ashore, being too large for the wharf there. Lifou is known for its snorkeling.

Lifou Island, New Caledonia | Carnival Luminosa 2023

Cruising on the Carnival Luminosa was great! But, visiting our first port
Lifou Island, part of the Loyalty Islands of New Caledonia was amazing! This wasn't our first visit to this island but it was just as beautiful as ever.

Make sure you take your snorkel gear. If you're lucky, you'll get to see one of the sea turtles that frequent the area. When we walked off the pier, we turned right and followed the path as far as we could go. We think it is the best beach within walking distance.

After a refreshing swim and a chat with the locals we headed back towards the pier and headed up to the main market area where there are local tours, demonstrations, places to eat and have a drink or two.

Turquoise Waters & Orange Sunsets | A Walkk on Lifou Island, New Caledonia

Lifou Island is in the Loyalty Islands of New Caledonia in the South Pacific. A tender port, the pier is beside Easo beach, a popular spot for swimming and snorkelling, and a marketplace set up by locals where you can buy clothing, food, souvenirs, drinks and ice cream. There is one main walkable road from the port. To the left, you have a snorkelling area and a church on the hill, We went right towards Easo village and walked beside the shoreline, taking in the lush greenery, palm trees and clear waters, We saw Easo Church and a nearby cemetery, a privately-owned cave area and passed some traditional houses. Along the walk, I was amazed at the beautiful flowers and butterflies. After our walk, we enjoyed an ice cream and watching the turquoise waters of this gorgeous island,

Exploring Lifou Island - Snorkelling, Churches and the Secret Grotto - Carnival Splendor

Lifou Island, New Caledonia is a fantastic destination on a South Pacific Cruise onboard the Carnival Splendor.
After catching a Tender boat to the Jetty, we first went left to try to find a good snorkel site. It looked a bit shallow so we went back past the Jetty to try our luck there. Unfortunately, the water was murky and visibility was poor. Despite that, we still enjoyed the coral and fish in that spot. The highlight was a big white Stingray resting on the bottom. He didn't seem too bothered by us being there, although I always have thoughts of Steve Irwin anytime I am near a Stingray.
After that, we explored the village and then walked for about 15 minutes to get to Notre Dame de Lourdes Church. It is up high on the Island and the views from up there are awesome.
Going back, we were conscious that we didn't have too much time before the last Tender back to the ship but we carried on to the secret Grotto - Lue Jajinyi Cave. There's a freshwater pool in the cave which was very refreshing after being so hot.
We were definitely glad that we made the effort to go and made it back in plenty of time to get back onboard the ship.

Thank you for watching.

A day in Lifou New Caledonia

Last week went on a week long cruise from Brisbane Australia to the South Pacific and back. On day 5 we stopped at Lifou Island. IT WAS AMAZING!! Lifou is in New Caledonia and we were lucky enough to spend the whole day there, swimming in the crystal clear water, snorkelling, sipping on coconuts, shopping at the local markets, trekking through a forest to a secret grotto. It was stunning, so much fun, best day ever!

It’s one of those places where you arrive and your jaw drops. You take a million photos because you can’t believe what you’re seeing and want to show everyone at home. We were even greeted by a sea turtle.

Our whole cruise was so much fun, the island stops were just the cherry on top. We sailed on the Carnival Luminosa. Highly recommended! I can’t wait to do it again.

P&O Experiences: Cliffs of Jokin - Lifou, New Caledonia

Lifou Island, New Caledonia, 2019

Some drone footage from Lifou Island, New Caledonia.

And here's a link to the 360 panoramic view...

Kiki Beach, Lifou Island, New Caledonia

I was on a cruise ship and I believe this is the best, closest place to see. A real gem. The only way to access the beach is to walk approx. 1.5 km through the forest. You have to turn right after football field in Xepenehe (follow Chez jean paul pour aller a kiki beach on the map) and than the very tight path will lead you to the beach. Path is marked with some yellow-red marks, so you can't miss it. It's very safe to walk.
