Luxembourg City, the capital of the only Grand Duchy in the world, will surprise you with its myriad delights. Rarely will you find a country in Europe where so many cultures, mentalities and languages act in accordance and perfect harmony. With its stunning blend of theatre and museums, UNESCO World Heritage sites, architectural jewels and Michelin-rated gastronomy, the capital city of Luxembourg is one of the most unique experiments in harmonious diversity.
Founded in the year 963, the Old City of Luxembourg turned a rock into a legendary fortress among the most powerful in Europe of the 16th century. The 17th century saw the creation of the famous casemates, subterranean vaulted spaces for refuge during military attacks. Despite the dismantling of this spectacular defence complex in the 19th century, the most visually arresting parts of the fortress have survived and can be visited during your travel to Luxembourg City. The fortress and the Old City are listed as World Heritage by UNESCO since 1994.
Whilst the Luxembourg fortress was a true textbook example of European military architecture, it has changed hands many times over its existence. Italian, Spanish, Belgian, French, Austrian, Dutch and Prussian engineers have been involved in progressively extending the fortifications of this stronghold. Traces of their work remain, and what traces! An extraordinary network of 23km of underground galleries, the famous casemates, which were carved from the city’s rocks constitute the city’s main attraction. The Grand-Duke’s residence, the Grand-Ducal palace, has an exceptionally beautiful facade in Flemish Renaissance style (16th century), and a majestic interior and ceremonial rooms open to the public during the summer only. In the Notre-Dame Cathedral, 17th century rood screen contrasts with the 20th century windows. The medieval houses in the outlying areas harmoniously blend with the avant-garde architecture of the Kirchberg plateau, the European institution area.
European capital - The cradle of Europe
Luxembourg has always held a privileged position in the process of European integration. Since the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) in 1952, several European institutions have set up in the capital. The birthplace of one of the fathers of Europe, Robert Schuman, Luxembourg has the vocation of playing the role of one of the European capitals not only due to its geographical situation right in the heart of Europe, but also due to its multilingualism. Cosmopolitan and welcoming, with a population made up of almost 170 different nationalities, the city is a real economic, social and cultural melting-pot.
Besides Brussels and Strasbourg, the capital city of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is one of the three European cities hosting the most important European institutions. Luxembourg houses the General Secretariat of the European Parliament, the European Investment Bank, as well as the Court of Justice and the European Court of Auditors.
Flourishing setting for culture
In Luxembourg, the museums appear in ceremonial garb. The Luxembourg City History Museum retraces the high points of the over one thousand years of history of a European city with human dimensions whilst the National Museum of History and Art hosts one of the most beautiful Roman mosaics north of the Alps. The permanent and temporary exhibitions of the National Museum of Natural History natur musée fascinate adults and children whilst modern art-lovers should head to the Casino Luxembourg Forum of Contemporary Art. The Museum of Modern Art Grand-Duc Jean MUDAM is one of the most ambitious architectural and cultural projects ever undertaken in the Grand Duchy. The Chinese American architect Ieoh Ming Pei came up with, designed then transformed the Thüngen fort, a highly strategic military location at the time in a strategic location for artistic creation. Close to the MUDAM is the Philharmonie, another architectural gem on the Kirchberg plateau which hosts some of the most prestigious musical groups. The city’s Grand Théâtre hosts and coproduces operas, musical, dance shows and plays in French, German and English. Throughout the seasons, the city of Luxembourg offers a range of colourful concerts and festivals, from Printemps musical (music in the springtime), via the festival for unity Summer in the City and the Indian summer Live at Vauban to Winterlights, whilst Schueberfouer, one of the biggest funfairs in Europe attracts over 2 million visitors every year.
LUXEMBOURG TRAVEL | Highlights of Luxembourg Country + Travel Itinerary
The country of Luxembourg is situated in western Europe and borders Belgium, France, and Germany. With an area of 2,586 square kilometers (998 sq mi), Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in all of Europe. But in spite of its size, this country has deep historical roots and offers a lot of diversity. From the rocky gorges in the east to the river valleys in the north and medieval towns with castles perched in between. We’ll now dive into our top 7 interesting places to visit and things to do in the country of Luxembourg.
7. Echternach
Echternach is located in the east of Luxembourg, right next to the German border. It is known as the oldest town in the country, dating back to the end of the 7th century when the Abbey of Echternach was established. Today, you can find a lovely open square, beautiful historical buildings (including the Abbey of Echternach, the adjoined Basilica of Saint Willibrord, the Roman Villa and the Orangery), and cute restaurants. This town makes for a great stop while exploring the countryside, or as a base to explore the unspoilt Mullerthal Region.
6. Mullerthal
The Mullerthal Region itself is probably the most unique area in all of Luxembourg. With an abundance of mysterious caves, small waterfalls, dense forests, and sandstone rock formations, this region is best explored on foot. Experienced hikers can tackle the challenging 112 km (70mi) Mullerthal Trail. But if you just have a few hours or a day, we recommend hiking shorter trails (i.e. Schiessentümpel waterfalls, Huel Lee Cave, Kallektuffquell).
5. Esch-sur-Sûre
Situated in a river valley in north-western Luxembourg, Esch-sur-Sûre is one of the tiniest villages in the country. Here, it seems as if time has stood still. You can see the remains of an old castle on the hill, with narrow streets surrounding it.
4. Clervaux
Located in northern Luxembourg, Clervaux is another countryside town that is worth a visit. Not only is it home to the beautiful Clervaux castle, but you can also walk here in the surrounding forests and hills or explore the small town center and nearby Abbey.
3. Bourscheid
Bourscheid is a small town in north-eastern Luxembourg, known for the country’s largest and most dramatic castle. But besides that, this village is located right next to the river and surrounded by rolling, green hills. Thus, it’s a great place for camping, swimming, and hiking. The long-distance Escapardenne Lee Trail runs through this area, and offers breathtaking views of the river valley (Gringlay View Point).
2. Vianden
Vianden is our favorite town in all of Luxembourg. Located in a valley along the Our River, this village enjoys an idyllic setting. But its main attraction is undoubtedly the Vianden Castle, which has been beautifully restored since 1977 when it passed into state ownership. You can easily combine a visit to the castle with a stroll through the town or a scenic ride on the chairlift.

Luxembourg is a small country in Europe bordering France Belgium and Germany. It is known for it's banking and European Union offices, and most recently also for its free public transport system. Its capital is simply called Luxembourg.
This walk takes you from the Inner city, the new Luxembourg town, to the old Luxembourg. We cross the grand dukes palace in the city center on the way to the Chemin de la Corniche, a walking trail with spectacular views to the old town and the Neumünster Abbey.

LuxCitizenship founder Daniel Atz takes you on a visit to Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg. Often overlooked as a former industrial city, Luxembourg's second city is living a cultural renaissance with street art and murals throughout the city.
Daniel is an American-Luxembourg dual citizen. Daniel recovered Luxembourg nationality through his great-grandmother Marguerite who left from Esch-sur-Alzette to Leavenworth, Kansas. Daniel uses his ancestor's story to explain why he loves Esch-sur-Alzette. Daniel takes you around some of the different parts of the city and explains about Esch2022 ( Esch-sur-Alzette will be a European Capital of Culture in 2022 and home to various art and culture programs bringing international attention to Luxembourg.
Daniel also visits the Minett Trail and explains about Esch-sur-Alzette's mining history and its role in creating Luxembourg's riches.

Although the capital city of Luxembourg is not particularly large, its layout is complex, as the city is set on several levels, straddling hills and dropping into the two gorges.
The 70 m (230 ft) deep gorges are spanned by many bridges and viaducts.
The city, because of its location and natural geography, has through history been a place of strategic military significance. The first fortifications were built as early as the 10th century.
The Casemates Bock is a network of underground fortifications, built in the 18th century, that tunnel under the city. The fortifications and environs are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The capital city of Luxembourg City is a seat of several institutions of the European Union, including the European Court of Justice, the European Court of Auditors, and the European Investment Bank.
