The Biggest Waterfall In The World! Kaieteur Falls in Guyana!

After several days of uncertainty due to the weather, I was finally able to head out to one of Guyana’s natural wonders, Kaieteur Falls, on the final day of my trip!

My day began bright and early in Guyana’s capital, Georgetown, but soon I’d be deep within Kaieteur National Park (which became a national park in 1929) to see the world’s largest single-drop waterfall by volume! It’ 4.5 times higher than Niagara Falls!

We could only get there via a tiny airplane, so we had to weigh ourselves and everything onboard to make sure we weren’t overweight. I was 81 kilos, so I was good! It would take us roughly an hour and 15 minutes to fly to the falls. I couldn’t wait!

While we waited, we had some coconut biscuits for a light breakfast. They were hard and crunchy, but they would have been great with some coffee or chai. I loved the coconut flavor. The falls are so isolated, we had to take some snacks with us.

Roraima Airways would be taking us deep into the jungle. Our plane only seats 8 people, but we also saw a big, state-of-the-art helicopter that they operate. They monitor the weather all the time to make sure the conditions are good for flying.

After a brief delay due to weather conditions, we were ready to fly! I slept for half of the flight. I could glimpse the falls from the air as we made our descent. Then, we arrived at the Kaieteur National Park Center, where they have snacks and sell souvenirs.

Before you head out to the falls, they run down the park rules. Visitors must stay on the established paths, and no swimming/wading is allowed in the Potaro River. All visitors must be accompanied by a guide. There’s no littering or alcohol consumption allowed, and you can’t collect or remove any plants or animals in the park.

You also cannot set fires within the park, and visitors are not allowed to approach the edge of the falls or the gorge. The trails can be hazardous, so you have to be safe.

We found a carnivorous plant called sundew, which is coated in a sticky substance that captures insects. Then, we also saw a golden frog inside a plant, and a beehive. I loved being out in the rainforest. We also saw plants that the indigenous people use for toiletries and a striped plant called a tiger’s stripe.

Our guide also showed us a species of bamboo. As we got closer to the Rainbow Viewpoint, I could hear the water crashing. The falls were spectacular! They were easily the most impressive waterfalls I’d ever seen. We spent about 15 minutes there, just taking photos and admiring the view.

But there was one more viewpoint for us to hike to! We followed the trail through the jungle to Nature Valley View, which is right near the mouth of the falls. It’s so close to the falls and is so amazing!

I drank a bit of fresh water from a nearby stream as we hiked back to the Kaieteur National Park Center. There, they have little figurines of native animals made from a natural latex called balata, which comes from the sap of the bulletwood tree. They shape it into turtles, snakes, parrots, jaguars, armadillos, caiman, manatees, porcupines, and other animals!

I bought one for my daughters and some friends before trying some crunchy fried chana and some smooth and creamy milk fudge. Then, it was time to fly back to Georgetown!

This time, I rode next to the pilot so I could get the best views possible of the falls as we flew off! What an unforgettable experience!

Kaieteur, Guyana. The highest single drop waterfall in the world!

We visited Kaieteur at the end of our trip to Guyana in January 2009 when, as you will see, there was plenty of water about! You may also notice that the keep 8 feet from the edge warnings were not wholly complied with! Enjoy!

Kaieteur Falls The World's Largest Single Drop Waterfall

SUBSCRIBE NOW:

A stunning video has captured the immense beauty and raw power of the world’s largest single-drop waterfall - which only a few thousand people visit per year due to its remote location.

Sensational Kaieteur Falls, found in the Kaieteur National Park on the Potaro River in Guyana, sees some 30,000 gallons of water cascade down a sheer drop of about 750ft.

Estimates put the number of tourists who make the journey to see the falls themselves at under 4000 per year - compared to the city of Niagara Falls which welcomes 12m annually.

Most visitors take about a one hour flight from capital city Georgetown to an airstrip at the top of the falls - where protected parkland makes for spectacular scenes.

That was the route keen traveler Jeremy Weate, originally from Birmingham, UK but who now lives in Kenya, took while he was visiting the country for business.

Kaieteur Fall is considered the biggest single drop waterfall in the world and I feel so blessed to be able to experience firsthand such a wonderful natural beauty. It takes one hour flight to get there and 15 min walk to see the first viewpoint. In total, the walk is about one hour and a half to see all the 3 different viewpoints. Bring water, comfortable clothes, and sunblock if you have sensitive skin. To be honest I didn't have any sunblock or mosquito repellent I guess I'm used to it since I'm from Colombia.
Kaieteur Falls is the world's largest single-drop waterfall by the volume of water flowing over it. Located on the Potaro River in the Kaieteur National Park, it sits in a section of the Amazon rainforest included in the Potaro-Siparuni region of Guyana
This tour begins at the Eugene International Airport, where you will take a little plane for a 1-hour flight to Kaieteur national park.
Once there You will walk through the rainforest for about two hours with a tour guide who will show you different viewpoints.
There are actually five viewpoints (Johnson's, Boy Scout, Rainbow, Break, Lookout), two were closed to the public, so we were able to visit only three of them.

I want to say thank you to Guyana's board of tourism to make this possible.

???? Big thanks to Mikey ???????? amazing videographer

Kaieteur Falls, The Worlds Most Spectacular and Most Powerful Waterfall

Kaieteur Falls, The Worlds Most Spectacular and Most Powerful Waterfall
Kaieteur Falls is a waterfall on the Potaro River is located in Kaieteur National Park and is in the centre of Guyana's rain-forest. It is 226 meters or 741 feet, when it was measured from its lope over a sandstone cliff to the first break. It then flows over a series of steep cascades that, when included in the measurements, bring the total height to 251 meters or 822 feet. Posteriorly, the locals named the falls Kaieteur, or “Old Man Falls”. Kaieteur Falls is about five times higher than the more well known Niagara Falls, and about two times the height of the Victoria Falls located on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe in Africa.
It is a single drop waterfall (by height and volume), which is the 122nd tallest in the world according to the World Waterfalls Database. Its distinction lies in the unique combination of great height and large volume, average flow rate of 663 cubic meters per second. The scenic visage of the Potaro River – a wide, coffee colored flow that runs for 225 kilometers. Up river from the falls, the Potaro Plateau stretches out to the distant escarpment of the Pakaraima Mountains. The Potaro river amalgamate with the Essequibo River which is one the longest and widest rivers in South America. Kaieteur Falls is indeed one of the earths most spectacular and most powerful waterfalls.
