The Oldest City On The Planet: Jericho // Behind The Wall

Have you ever wondered when and where the first city in the history of mankind was founded?
Well, you’ll be able to find your answer in the West Bank of Palestine.
Situated by the Dead Sea and the border of Jordan, Jericho is known as one of the earliest continuous settlements in the world, dating back approximately 11,000 years.
It’s mind-blowing just to think about this number.
During my Palestine trip, I got a chance to stop by Jericho, so in this video, I’m going to share what this ancient city is like.

According to the Hebrew Bible, the Israelites conquered the Canaanite city of Jericho when they arrived in the Promised Land. The walls of Jericho collapsed at the sounds of the people shouting and the ram’s horns of Joshua’s army (Josh 6:20). Their fall echoed through history, making the site of ancient Jericho, at present-day Tell es-Sultan, one of the first places to be explored during the pioneering era of biblical archaeology. Four archaeological expeditions between 1907 and 2014 have focused on the site, searching for the walls of Jericho. Archaeologists have discovered a complex system of fortifications, destroyed and rebuilt many times.

In the early third millennium B.C.E., the people of Jericho took a decisive step and constructed a massive mudbrick wall surrounding the city. This impressive Early Bronze Age fortification consisted of an inner wall about 4 meters thick and an outer wall 2 meters thick, both built of sundried reddish mudbricks on stone foundations. Blind rooms in the corridor between the parallel walls were sometimes filled with soil or whitish crushed limestone. This filling was not white ash from Joshua’s attack, as was previously thought, but was intended to strengthen the double wall system. An external ditch gave the wall added protection.

In the 24th century B.C.E., a dramatic conflagration destroyed the city wall and the entire city. (The cause of the blaze, perhaps an enemy attack or an earthquake, remains under debate.) The ruinously burnt and collapsed city wall, still visible centuries after its destruction, was so impressive that the later biblical author identified it as the wall of Joshua’s attack, as did the earliest archaeologists who explored the site (for example, Frederick Jones Bliss and John Garstang).

Several centuries later, in the second millennium B.C.E., Jericho became a powerful Canaanite city, again well fortified with mudbrick walls strengthened by three successive plastered ramparts. These powerful fortifications were brought to an end by another major conflagration (caused by an earthquake or Egyptian forces).

Between 1952 and 1958, British archaeologist K.M. Kenyon showed through stratigraphic digging that the wall, which Garstang and others claimed was part of Joshua’s conquered city, was actually far older than the hypothetical date of Joshua’s conquest (the end of the Late Bronze Age, in the late 13th century B.C.E.). Jericho’s world-famous fortifications permanently collapsed around 1550 B.C.E., at the end of the Middle Bronze Age and well before the time assumed for Joshua’s conquest. They were never reconstructed. No archaeological evidence corroborates the biblical account of what happened in Jericho.

The ruins of the Bronze Age walls were apparently so impressive that they inspired the biblical author to place Jericho at the heart of the narrative of the Israelite conquest. In fact, the profile of the ancient burnt city wall is still visible today as a protruding red edge along the summit of the mound, showing apparent traces of the fierce fire that destroyed it.

To quote Eric Cline, professor of ancient history and archaeology at The George Washington University, “It would seem that the only mystery still remaining about the story of Joshua and the Battle of Jericho is how it came to be written in the first place” (From Eden to Exile: Unraveling Mysteries of the Bible, p. 120).

Top 10 oldest cities in the world - UNESCO list

The Telegraph revealed a list ratified by (UNESCO) that includes the 10 oldest cities on earth, and it is impressive that the Arab region includes 8 cities out of the 10, which indicates the nobility of its lands, history and civilizations distinguished.
The world's ancient cities are unmistakably aesthetic, with their bustling markets under clear blue skies, embroidered and brightly colored white cotton garments and sun-covered stone buildings.
However, the long history of these cities has not been without periods of turmoil and unrest, and unfortunately some of these cities are still uninhabitable due to the difficult periods they have caused. For example, Aleppo, Syria, perhaps the world's oldest inhabited city, is currently embroiled in a devastating civil war, as does Damascus.
Some of the world's oldest cities are still thriving in life, such as Plovdiv in Bulgaria, which has adapted to modern life, while retaining its beauty inherited from bygone times.

10. (Beirut, Lebanon) - 3000 BC
9. (Gaziantep, Turkey) - 3650 BC
8. (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) - 4000 BC
7. (Sidon, Lebanon) - 4000 BC
6. (Fayoum, Egypt) - 4000 BC
5. (susa, Iran) - 4200 BCE
4. (Damascus, Syria) - 4300 BC
3. (Aleppo, Syria) - 4300 BC
2. (Byblos, Lebanon) - 5000 BC
1. (Jericho, Palestine) - 9000 BCE

Syria's capital of Damascus is widely considered as the oldest continuously inhabited city on earth, with evidence of habitation dating back (at least) 11,000 years. For all you math wizards out there, that's about 10,000 B.C.!

This is largely due to the unique positioning of the city -- in the heart of the Middle East, in the center of the world and at the intersection of 3 continents. Damascus was conquered by Alexander the Great in 333 BCE, and since then, it's been taken over by dozens of empires such as Roman, Arab and Ottoman.

I have spent the first few days of my trip in Syria in this amazing city, and I'm loving it so much that I wanted to dedicate an entire video to show you what it's like to visit.

One thing that I didn't mention much in the video is about how SAFE it is in Damascus. I can't speak yet for the rest of Syria, but as far as this city goes (in this current day), I feel extremely safe just like I do in any other big city around the world.

“Elisha’s Spring” is the Biblical oriented name given to Ain es-Sultan, the spring next to Tel el-Sultan / Biblical Jericho . Local tradition identifies the spring as the site where Elisha the prophet purified the water of Jericho:

“Elisha.. was staying in Jericho.. The people of the city said to Elisha, “Look, our lord, this town is well situated, as you can see, but the water is bad and the land is unproductive.” “Bring me a new bowl,” he said, “and put salt in it.” So they brought it to him. Then he went out to the spring and threw the salt into it, saying, “This is what the Lord says: ‘I have healed this water. Never again will it cause death or make the land unproductive.’” And the water has remained pure to this day, according to the word Elisha had spoken.” (II Kings 2:18-22).

Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.

In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)

Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

The Oldest City in the World?

Is Tiahuanaco even older than Jericho? Peruvian archaeologist Arthur Posnansky, found evidence in this ancient Bolivian temple complex, that could date it back to more than 17,000 years old. See what he found.

Jericho is a Palestinian city in the West Bank. It is located in the Jordan Valley, with the Jordan River to the east and Jerusalem to the west. It is the administrative seat of the Jericho Governorate, and is governed by the Palestinian National Authority.

Whether you are walking around ancient ruins or observing epic monasteries carved into the Judean mountains, it is impossible not to feel a sense of history in Jericho, which is proudly dubbed the ‘world’s oldest continuously inhabited city' by the local authorities. The lowest cable car below sea level in the world. You can walk up to Quruntal mountain – and probably should to burn off the calories from the seven errr two falafels you had – but I would take the beautiful and inexpensive cable car. You’ll have the most spectacular view of Ancient Jericho and the modern city.Camels. Yes. Who doesn’t like camels? Take a picture with a camel. Preferably one wearing a cowboy hat.Ancient Jericho. This is the Jericho from the Bible. See it. Touch the wall. The wall. You know, the one the Israelites knocked down. Even if you’re not a bible banger you’ll appreciate a story that involves espionage, prostitution and military strategy.Jericho has always been on my bucket list of cities that I have to see. It’s considered one of the most ancient cities in the world and is the lowest city below sea level.Head on down there and you’ll fall in love with this desert oasis.
