Is BRATISLAVA, SLOVAKIA worth visiting?

Olivia and Nathan here!
We took the 2.5 hour train ride from Budapest to Bratislava. To be honest, we almost skipped Slovakia completely, but we decided to check out for 24 hours. A lot of fellow travelers staying in Vienna or Budapest asked us, is it worth visiting?

DAY TRIPPIN' BETWEEN THE WORLD'S 2 CLOSEST CAPITALS (Vienna to Bratislava)

In this video, we take a day trip between 2 of the world's closest capitals: Vienna, Austria and Bratislava, Slovakia! We were very excited for this trip because all the good things we've heard about Bratislava!

We start off traveling by train between the two cities. The total trip only takes about an hour so it's the perfect day trip from Vienna! After we got off the train we were able to enjoy the beautiful walk into the downtown area and see St. Michael's gate, which stands out with its unique architecture and teal color. Unfortunately, it started to rain on us but we still enjoyed our time as much as possible by going to Primate's Palace. We also had the palace all to ourselves and were able to walk around and take many videos and pictures.

After Primate's, we headed over to the BLUE CHURCH which is a unique and colorful building that slightly resembled a marshmallow candy! Next, we went to St. Martin's Cathedral and toured the Crypts underneath the church.

One amazing thing about Bratislava was that a lot of the tourist attractions were affordable (1-3 euros) and informative. It was such a cool experience to be able to hop on a train and within a short hour we entered a completely new country with a different country with its very own language, architecture, culture, and food.

We had an amazing time and would love to explore more of the country (and maybe we will soon hehehe)

Howdy! We're Jenna & Andrew and we create travel vlogs. With this channel we hope to do more than just the typical bucket list. We set out to better understand the culture, language, and most importantly the people of the places we travel to. Our channel is designed to give a unique perspective and knowledge of each country, and our honest and true experience.

BRATISLAVA City Guide | Slovakia | Travel Guide

Bratislava is the capital and largest city of Slovakia. Bratislava is located in southwestern Slovakia at the foot of the Little Carpathians, occupying both banks of the River Danube and the left bank of the River Morava. Bratislava received its contemporary name in 1919. Until then, it was mostly known by its German name, Pressburg.
While most visitors who travel to Bratislava are just passing by, the city has much to offer, and it's worth exploring. Whether you're looking for castles, unique buildings, or quirky art, Bratislava won't disappoint.

ULTIMATE 24 Hours in BRATISLAVA SLOVAKIA - Devin Castle, Slovak Food, & MORE (SLOVAKIA SURPRISED US)

Should You Visit Bratislava? Trying Halušky in Slovakia. Things to do in the city. Travel Guide

We spent a day exploring the capital of Slovakia, Bratislava.

We started the day at the beautiful blue church (Church of St. Elizabeth), although we weren’t able to go in as it was closed.

Because the city is known for it’s many palaces, we next went to the Presidential Palace (The Grassalkovich Palace) where we took a look at the outside and the gardens, including many fountains and statues.

We then stopped to try some Slovakian food, particularly what they are best known for, a dumpling dish called Halušky.

On our way back to the old town we came upon a couple of churches as well as a small park with more statues.

We then made our way to one of the main squares of the city Hviezdoslavovo námestie where we managed to cool off a bit. We also passed by one of the more famous statues in Bratislava called Cumil (the Watcher).

From there we made our way up to Bratislava Castle to explore the outside and gardens a bit before a rain storm came in and we had to wrap things up early!

Slovakia Bratislava:
It is also referred as the Beauty on the Danube, it boasts incredible history, but it has also evolved to be dynamic region of the central Europe’s present.

With a population of around 450,000 inhabitants, Bratislava is located in the south-west of Slovakia, and stretches on both banks of the Danube and in the foothills of Little Carpathian mountains. Thanks to this favourable position it was always a commercial centre. In spite of its exciting history, Bratislava is one of the youngest Capitals of the world and its population is also very young. The modern metropolis is opened to Europe. Palaces, modern shopping and trade centres, admirable arts of the Slovak cooks and brewers, friendly people and various international cultural or sport events, exhibitions, and business opportunities are the reasons why it is worth of visit.

Church of St. Elizabeth (The Blue Church)
Like from a fairy-tale. Bratislava’s most appealing art nouveau building, a model of which is present in Brussels as well, representing Slovakia. When you look at it on a sunny day, it has the same color as the sky – and has its name for this obvious reason. The facade is blue. The mosaics are blue. The majolicas are blue. Everything, including the pale blue-gazed roof through the gate is blue. And not only exterior – its interior is also painted in shades of pale blue. No wonder it is always surrounded with people taking pictures of it.

Presidential Palace (Grassalkovich Palace)
Known as Slovakia’s White House, this palace is the official seat of the president of Slovakia. Its large French garden which is one of the most popular parks in Bratislava is definitely worth of visiting. In past this building used to serve as a venue for aristocratic society events and concerts. Josepf Haydn, a popular Austrian composer, held some of his concerts in this palace, for example.

Cumil Statue: It is one of the most popular statues in Bratislava. It represents the figure of a worker coming out of the sewers to look at the people around. The statues in the city are part of the rupture element with the past and the soviet influence in the country.

Bratislava Castle
The monumental building of the Bratislava Castle is visible from a great distance. Certainly, every visitor of Bratislava notices the pronounced silhouette. The majestic impression is enhanced by the hill it stands on, some eighty-five metres above the water level of the Danube river. It was an important fortified settlement at the end of the 9th century. The first written reference to Bratislava from 907 is related to this period; it mentions a battle between the Bavarians and early Magyars under the Brezalauspurc Castle. First, there was a pre-Romanesque stone palace in the 11th and 12th century on the castle hill. Generous reconstruction of the castle started in 1423 and the result of this reconstruction was a Gothic castle referred to as a Sigismund`s castle.

Is Bratislava, Slovakia Worth Visiting?

Is Bratislava, Slovakia worth visiting? I had no idea what to expect but within five minutes of arriving I knew this was going to be good. This European capital city really charmed me and it's well worth visiting. It’s a one hour drive from Vienna, Austria, which makes a perfect day trip. If you can spend a bit more time, even better.

How much is it to stay in Bratislava? Tour my Airbnb:

Visit the Bratislava Christmas Market with me:

The first thing I saw was the SNP Bridge or, as locals call it, the UFO Bridge which crosses the Danube River. SNP stands for Slovak National Uprising but the nickname comes from the flying saucer shaped restaurant that sits at the top of the bridge pylon. Unfortunately, the construction of the bridge meant that a large portion of the beautiful Old Town was destroyed, including almost the entire Jewish quarter.

St. Martin’s Cathedral, one of the city’s most historically important buildings, narrowly missed the bridge construction. The access ramp for the bridge is extremely close to it and the church is actually sustaining damage due to all the vibrations from the busy traffic. The cathedral was where Hungarian kings (and one queen!) were crowned for hundreds of years. Leaders of the Habsburg Empire, including the one and only Maria Theresa, had their coronations there between 1563 and 1830. There’s a crown at the top of the steeple sitting on a golden pillow which gives a hint of how significant this place is. On the sidewalk below there are little crown symbols that show the coronation procession route taken by royals on their way to St. Martin’s. You can follow them through the town, if you’d like to walk in their footsteps.

The best view of the cathedral is from Bratislava Castle which sits above the city. The hill has been populated since the Stone Age and the first known inhabitants were the Celts. There are a bunch of stairs to reach the castle but it’s well worth it. I love the crisp white colour of the castle with its four towers. I think it’s the best spot to see the sunset because the warm light at dusk is beautiful.

Michael’s Gate is the only surviving gate to the old city. There used to be four city gates and they were the only way in and out during medieval times. Michael’s Gate was built in the 13th century and in the 17th century a moat was added complete with a draw bridge that went up and down.

Nearby Michael’s Gate is Executioner Alley. It’s where the town executioner used to live and, because the city only had one, his house had to be clearly marked for anyone, um, needing him. The residence is now a massage centre which I found pretty funny.

If you’re in need of good luck there are some statues in Bratislava you can touch. One is of a man standing in a gutter at an intersection called ‘The Watcher.’ It’s considered good luck to touch his head. If you still need more luck, head over to the statue of Hans Christian Andersen and rub his finger. He visited Bratislava and it even inspired some of his writing.

One of my favourite spots in Bratislava is the Church of St. Elizabeth of Hungary or, as it’s better known, the Blue Church. Everything from the façade to the mosaic tiles to the roof is blue. Inside the art nouveau building even the pews are blue. This church is a really popular spot to get married and it takes years to get a booking.

A building that has been given the honour of being one of the ugliest in the world is also found in Bratislava: the Slovak Radio Building. This inverted pyramid is an excellent example of Brutalist architecture from the Communist era in Slovakia. Whether you love it or hate it, I doubt you’ll forget it.

We did a great free walking tour which I can highly recommend. If you’re interested, this is the company:

Does Bratislava look like a place that you’d like to visit? I’m curious what, if anything, surprised you in the video - leave a comment below.

Is Bratislava worth visiting?

Bratislava is the capital city of Slovakia, and is not the most popular city in the world but that makes it perfect for a cheap city break.

This hidden gem has many beautiful sights to see as well as a buzzing nightlife, if that’s more your thing. The castle was built in the 9th century then later built upon in the 18th century and so has many stories to tell if you enjoy historic sights, not to mention the stunning view as it looks out over Slovakia.

BLACK PEOPLE TRAVEL TO BRATISLAVA, Slovakia - Is Bratislava Worth Visiting? Things To Do, See, & Eat

People have asked, Do Black People Travel to Bratislava? Is Bratislava Worth Visiting? In this video you will see the highlights of Bratislava and learn fascinating facts about this Slovak city. We'll explore the old town and new town. It still has it's medieval origins along with a vibrant city center. I was surprised by the grafitti art, adding an urban vibe. We took an awesome FREE walking tour, learned Slovak greetings, had lunch at a traditional Slovak pub, and tried traditional dishes. We had the most delicious dessert at the cutest cafe. We learned intriguing facts and Slovak traditions.

There's also a few ways to pronounce Bratislava depending on where you’re located. Hungarians say it differently than the Slovak language. In Budapest, the ticket lady kept correcting my pronunciation, so I said it her way. In Bratislava, I asked the tour guide how to pronounce it and shared how I’ve heard it. She says I can pronounce it that way ????????♀️ that’s why I kept saying it ????. Surely, a native would know. Maybe she was just being nice to the tourist????. Now I know how to properly say it: Brat-e-slava. The joys of traveling the world, you live and learn. No harm, no foul. I enjoyed my visit and appreciate the learning experience.

We also learned about the history of Hungary and Slovakia. Black people travel the world and it was a pleasure exploring Bratislava!
