Ajanta Caves/Aurangabad:
The Ajanta Caves in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra state of India are about 30 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments which date from the 2nd century BCE to about 480 or 650 CE.The caves include paintings and sculptures described by the government Archaeological Survey of India as the finest surviving examples of Indian art, particularly painting, which are masterpieces of Buddhist religious art, with figures of the Buddha and depictions of the Jataka tales. The caves were built in two phases starting around the 2nd century BCE, with the second group of caves built around 400–650 CE according to older accounts, or all in a brief period of 460 to 480 according to the recent proposals of Walter M. Spink. The site is a protected monument in the care of the Archaeological Survey of India, and since 1983, the Ajanta Caves have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
With the Ellora Caves, Ajanta is the major tourist attraction of the Marathwada region of Maharashtra. About 59 kilometres (37 miles) from Jalgaon railway station on the Delhi – Mumbai line and Howrah-Nagpur-Mumbai line of the Central Railway zone, and 104 kilometres (65 miles) from the city of Aurangabad. They are 100 kilometres (62 miles) from the Ellora Caves, which contain Hindu and Jain temples as well as Buddhist caves, the last dating from a period similar to Ajanta. The Ajanta caves are cut into the side of a cliff that is on the south side of a U-shaped gorge on the small river Waghur, and although they are now along and above a modern pathway running across the cliff they were originally reached by individual stairs or ladders from the side of the river 10–35 m (30–110 ft) below.
The area was previously heavily forested, and after the site ceased to be used the caves were covered by jungle until accidentally rediscovered in 1819 by a British officer on a hunting party. They are Buddhist monastic buildings, apparently representing a number of distinct monasteries or colleges. The caves are numbered 1 to 28 according to their place along the path, beginning at the entrance. Several are unfinished and some barely begun and others are small shrines, included in the traditional numbering as e.g. 9A; Cave 15A was still hidden under rubble when the numbering was done. Further round the gorge are a number of waterfalls, which when the river is high are audible from outside the caves.
The caves form the largest corpus of early Indian wall-painting; other survivals from the area of modern India are very few, though they are related to 5th-century paintings at Sigiriya in Sri Lanka. The elaborate architectural carving in many caves is also very rare, and the style of the many figure sculptures is highly local, found only at a few nearby contemporary sites, although the Ajanta tradition can be related to the later Hindu Ellora Caves and other sites.Wikipedia

The Great Caves of Ajanta and Ellora

Caves have always held a special place for man. Some of the earliest art and storytelling are found there. In South Africa, These covered dwellings were used to record mysterious medical treatments while in other parts of the world they were a testament to daily life and the hunt. No matter the message—caves had a sacred role for man—maybe because they were the first safe haven or shelter or maybe because in their essence, caves are mysterious, dark often seemingly never ending entrances to another world. More modern writers from Mark Twain to Jules Verne used caverns as a metaphor and passage to another realm or for nurturing the human experience. The great eastern religions of Buddhism and Hinduism are no different. In two collections of hollowed out rock ledges in the Indian state of Maharashtra are some of the most fabulously decorated and significant Hindu and Buddhist caves in the world. It was here one religion superseded another, yet unlike most times when a faith is supplanted,

the old religion here was not destroyed and replaced by the new, but worshipped and existed side by side. So join me this week as we explore the Great Caves of Ajanta and Ellora.

The caves of Ajanta and Ellora are about 100 miles north of the city of Aurangabad in the east coast Indian state of Maharashtra. The most famous city in this state is Mumbai or Bombay which is an international gateway city with a modern airport and a number of attractions in its own right.

From Mumbai or Delhi, the other gateway city in India, it is a relatively short flight to Aurangabad. The temptation might be to head directly to the UNESCO site caves, but don’t. Aurangabad is worth a day or two of your time.

The city of Aurangabad dates back to 1610 when it was established as a commercial, political and military outpost inland from the west coast of India. In fact, it contains the tomb of one of the most important figures in India’s history—Aurangzeb—the son of the builder of the Taj Mahal.

Aurangzeb was an ambitious boy stuck in the middle of three brothers. What is a power seeking middle child to do? Kill your siblings of course. After dispatching his brothers, he turned his attention to his father Shah Jahan. Shah Jahan was already a legend having built the Taj Mahal for his favorite wife, Mumtaz as well as beautiful palaces and magnificent fortresses. Aurangzeb did not want to wait for his turn to rule—he wanted it now. In a daring military move, he defeats his father and locks him in the Agra Fort overlooking his beloved Taj Mahal. Seven years later Shah Jahan is buried there beside his much loved Mumtaz.
Aurangzeb did not like the over the top flourishes of his father. He felt it was an insult to Islam so he decided he would have a much simpler grave and this is the result. It was one of the most understated final resting places for a ruler in Indian history. Which is sort of ironic since the other big attraction in Aurangabad is a copy of the over the top final resting place he so despised.

The real Taj Mahal is some 700 miles away and yet this smaller version was built in 1661 by Aurangzeb’s son Prince Azam Shah for his mother. There’s an afterlife conversation I’d like to hear. This Taj is about 50% of the size of the original and unlike the original, only the bottom 3 feet or so is made of marble—the rest is plaster. This poor man’s Taj Mahal cost 45 times less.
A closer inspection reveals that the Aurangabad version is not an exact copy of the more famous and larger mausoleum, but the inspiration is unmistakable.

The Ajanta Caves are approximately 30 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments dating from the 2nd century BCE to about 480 CE in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra state in India. The caves include paintings and rock-cut sculptures described as among the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian art, particularly expressive paintings that present emotions through gesture, pose and form.

They are universally regarded as masterpieces of Buddhist religious art. The caves were built in two phases, the first starting around the 2nd century BCE and the second occurring from 400 to 650 CE, according to older accounts, or in a brief period of 460–480 CE according to later scholarship. The site is a protected monument in the care of the Archaeological Survey of India,[and since 1983, the Ajanta Caves have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Caves were the earliest shelters for human habitation. It was thus natural that humans subsequently copied and created elaborate cave systems like the Ajanta Caves. Perhaps one of the most recognized architectural structure of it’s kind in the world.

This episode explores the architectural masterpiece and the science behind it. The human spirit that chiseled this basalt mountain with hand made tools. And the aesthetics that survived the ravages of time.
The Ajanta Caves are 30 Buddhist rock-cut temples and monasteries set along horseshoe shaped river gorge. The caves were built between 2nd century BC and 5th century AD. The paintings and sculptures in Ajanta are considered masterpieces of the Buddhist art and Ajanta is UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Aurangabad Caves | Linking Ajanta and Ellora Art

Hidden in the sanctum of Aurangabad Caves are unique carvings not seen anywhere else in the sub-continent. These early Buddhist caves have transitional art and architecture linking the nearby Ajanta and Ellora Caves.

Just outside Aurangabad at the Sihayachal foothills paved steps lead up to our next destination, the Aurangabad Caves. These were an important time-link between the Ajanta and Ellora caves They linked the period from the 3rd to 7th centuries CE

The Chaityagriha is the only cave of the earlier Hinayana phase. A series of plain octagonal columns pass around the dagoba at the rear. The austere cylinder of the dagoba has a bulbous dome with a harmika and inverted pyramid on the top. Stone ribs carved out of the vault are an imitation of wooden beams. The soft basalt entrance has collapsed revealing its interior.

Cave 3 is the finest of this complex. A vihara, but without the individual cells for monks
Salbhanjikas sway from pillar capitals. Hidden in the dark recesses are devotees,
hands folded; gazes transfixed in adoration through the centuries. Pillars and pilasters are carved with floral and geometric motifs. A flautist… dancing musicians… and percussion.
Medallions on the shaft show cameos of couples and groups.

Cave 2 is a worship hall. Seated on a lotus stool Buddhas halo reflects golden sunlight
Padmapani, attended by a Naga, grasps a lotus stalk with a Buddha at the top and also on his forehead. On the other side Vajrapani has a lightning bolt in his right hand
and a deer on his left shoulder. A pradakshinpath around the shrine is cut out of the living rock. This circumambulatory feature is borrowed from structural temples. It evolved from the Chaityagriha in Mahayana Buddhism. The walls are covered with figures of seated buddhas in various hand gestures.

Only the shrine with an image of Buddha exists in Cave 5. The rest of the soft rock has collapsed and crumbled

So, this was Aurangabad Caves, and as you can see this also displayed some of the transitional art forms from the traditional forms of earlier. Don't forget to like and to subscribe. See you at our next destination!

Ellora Caves
Ellora is an archaeological site 29 km (18 mi) north-west of the city of Aurangabad in the Indian state of Maharashtra, built by the Rashtrakuta dynasty (Brahmanical & Buddhist group of caves) and Yadav (Jain group of caves). Well known for its monumental caves, Ellora is an UNESCO World Heritage Site and forms one of major tourist attraction in Marathwada region of Maharashtra Ellora represents the epitome of Indian rock-cut architecture. The 34 caves are actually structures excavated out of the vertical face of the Charanandri hills. Hindu, Buddhist and Jain rock-cut temples and viharas and mathas were built between the 5th century and 10th century. The 17 Hindu (caves 13–29), 12 Buddhist (caves 1–12) and 5 Jain (caves 30–34) caves, built in proximity, demonstrate the religious harmony prevalent during this period of Indian history. It is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India.
History:Ellora is known for Hindu, Buddhist and Jain cave temples built during (6th and 9th centuries) the rule of the Kalachuri, Chalukya and Rashtrakuta dynasties. The Jagannatha Sabha a group of five Jain cave temples of 9th century built by Rashtrakuta. Verul Ellora is around 28 km from Aurangabad, 450 km from Nagpur, 400 km from Mumbai, 150 km from Jalgaon & 200 km from Buldhana.

A Jain cave in Ellora:The five Jain caves at Ellora belong to the ninth and tenth centuries. They all belong to the Digambara sect. Jain caves reveal specific dimensions of Jain philosophy and tradition. They reflect a strict sense of asceticism – they are not relatively large as compared to others, but they present exceptionally detailed art works. The most remarkable Jain shrines are the Chhota Kailash (cave 30), the Indra Sabha (cave 32) and the Jagannath Sabha (cave 33). Cave 31 is an unfinished four-pillared hall and a shrine. Cave 34 is a small cave, which can be approached through an opening on the left side of Cave 33. Amongst other devotional carvings, a place called Samavasarana can be found in Elora caves. Samavasarana is of special interest to Jains, as it is a hall where the tirthankara preaches after attaining omniscience.
The Indra Sabha
The Buddhist caves
Cave no. 12
Plan of Cave No. 5 (Mahawara Cave)
These caves were built during the 5th-7th century. It was initially thought that the Buddhist caves were one of the earliest structures, created between the fifth and eighth centuries, with caves 1-5 in the first phase (400-600) and 6-12 in the later phase (mid 7th-mid 8th), but now it is clear to the modern scholars that some of the Hindu caves (27,29,21,28,19,26,20,17 and 14) precede these caves. The earliest Buddhist cave is Cave 6, followed by 5,2,3,5 (right wing), 4,7,8,10 and 9. Caves 11 and 12 were the last. All the Buddhist caves were constructed between 630-700.
These structures consist mostly of viharas or monasteries: large, multi-storeyed buildings carved into the mountain face, including living quarters, sleeping quarters, kitchens, and other rooms. Some of these monastery caves have shrines including carvings of Gautama Buddha, bodhisattvas and saints. In many of these caves, sculptors have endeavoured to give the stone the look of wood.
Most famous of the Buddhist caves is cave 10,(refer map) a chaitya hall (chandrashala) or 'Vishvakarma cave', popularly known as the 'Carpenter's Cave'. Beyond its multi-storeyed entry is a cathedral-like stupa hall also known as chaitya, whose ceiling has been carved to give the impression of wooden beams. At the heart of this cave is a 15-foot statue of Buddha seated in a preaching pose. Amongst other Buddhist caves, all of the first nine (caves 1–9) are monasteries. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________
Ajanta, [Longitude & Latitude Lat. 20°33'12.30N | Long. 75°42'1.70E], located at 107 km [66 miles], from Aurangabad district of Maharashtra State, India, is a World Heritage monument, evolved during the period from 2nd Century B.C. to 6th Century A.D.

Ajanta conjures before one’s vision, a dream of beauty of caves, hidden in the midst of a lonely glen with a streamlet flowing below. Caves that the ancient Buddhist monks, out on mission to spread tenets of Buddhism in ancient times, could dwell and pray. Caves that the followers of Lord Buddha, embellished with architectural details with a skillful command of the hammer over the chisel, with sculptures of highest craftsmanship and above all, with the paintings of infinite charm.

At Ajanta, the paintings on the walls, illustrate the events in the life of Prince Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism and more popular Jataka stories pertaining to Buddha’s previous incarnation. According to the older conceptions, the Buddha wrought many deeds of kindness and mercy in a long series of transmigration as a Bodhisattva, before achieving his final birth as the sage of Sakyas.

Incidentally, they contain the scenes of semi-mythological history, the royal court and popular life of the ancient times, as told in romances and plays. Some pictures recall the Greek and Roman compositions and proportions, few late resemble to Chinese manners to some extent but majority belongs to a phase which is purely Indian as they are found nowhere else.

The group of caves is designated by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Monument in 1983. Inclusion in this list confirms the exceptional universal value of a cultural or natural site which deserves protection for the benefit of all humanity.

Ellora Caves:

The last two caves, Do Tal (cave 11) and Tin Tal (cave 12) have three stories.Wikipedia

#33 PART 1 EXPLORE THE UNESCO World Heritage AURANGABAD CAVES I THAR DI I Mr&MrsMedico

PART 1 EXPLORE THE AURANGABAD CAVES I THAR DI I Mr&MrsMedico
The Aurangabad caves are twelve rock-cut Buddhist shrines located on a hill running roughly east to west, close to the city of Aurangabad, Maharashtra. The first reference to the Aurangabad Caves is in the great chaitya of Kanheri Caves. The Aurangabad Caves were dug out of comparatively soft basalt rock during the 6th and 7th century.

The caves are divided into three separate groups depending on their location:[1] these are usually called the Western Group, with Caves I to V (1 to 5), the Eastern Group, with Caves VI to IX (6 to 9), and a Northern Cluster, with the unfinished Caves X to XII (9 to 12).[2]

The carvings at the Aurangabad Caves are notable for including Hinayana style stupa, Mahayana art work and Vajrayana goddess. These caves are among those in India that show 1st millennium CE Buddhist artwork with goddesses such as Durga, and gods such as Ganesha, although Buddhist caves in other parts of India with these arts are older.[3] Numerous Buddhist deities of the Tantra tradition are also carved in these caves.

The cave temples of Aurangabad carved between the 6th and the 8th century are nine kilometers from Aurangabad city center, a few kilometers from the campus of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University ,Soneri Mahal and the Bibi-ka-Maqbara.[5]

Carved in the Sihaychal ranges, the Aurangabad caves somewhat have been overshadowed by the UNESCO World Heritage monuments of Ellora and Ajanta cave temples. Though its sculptures are comparable to Ajanta and Ellora, the caves are much smaller, more decrepit and less visited. Though in the 20th century, a few scholars started looking at these cave temples as a missing link between Ajanta and Ellora and also after an exhaustive study, were compelled to describe it as a Sensitive remaking of life situated in time and space span.[1] It is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India.
