Climate change never felt more real to my eyes until I arrived here in KIRIBATI - a small island nation in the Central Pacific Ocean.

The rising sea levels are quickly shrinking this country, which has a peak altitude of 3 meters. It's projected to be entirely underwater by the year 2100.

While many countries are feeling the impacts of climate change, nobody is more threatened right now than the 100,000+ residents of Kiribati.

The question now becomes, how do we prevent the people here from becoming climate refugees? The only 4 options I can think of are the following:

1. Build a higher sea wall (which will cost billions of USD)
2. Buy land overseas for them to relocate (will also cost a fortune)
3. Send more Kiribati citizens abroad (i.e. Australia and New Zealand) for jobs, and they can slowly adapt to a new life
4. Boost tourism in Kiribati so people can see firsthand the effects of climate change, which will also pump money back into the economy

Would love to get your thoughts on what we can do to help the wonderful people of Kiribati. I encourage you all to get creative and share your best solutions below. I will be reading and responding to as many comments as I can, and I encourage you to do the same. This is important.

World war 2 Battle of Tarawa: how the battlefield looks today! (Pacific war tour in Kiribati)

Discovering the historical battle site of Tarawa, Betio island, in Kiribati. In this tropical
paradise in November 1943 the US for the first time in the war went on a full frontal attack on heavily fortified beaches. The second Marines suffered enormous losses as the majority of the landing crafts got stuck on the reef and the soldiers had to wade in the water unprotected, towards Japanese machine gun fire. Three days later the small island and the Tarawa atoll was liberated but the beaches and waters were covered in blood.

KIRIBATI: 3 huge ???? challenges facing this small, friendly nation! (Tarawa Atoll, Central Pacific)

Tarawa Atoll, Kiribati, Pacific Ocean - the 3 major challenges facing Kiribati (Tarawa Atoll) in the Pacific Ocean. Let's go to the Republic of Kiribati (also known as the Tarawa Atoll or the Gilberts islands) and let's take a tour of this rarely visited island nation in the Central Pacific Ocean. Not only we will see some spectacular scenes from Kiribati (the Tarawa Atoll), but, we will examine the 3 huge challenges the nation of Kiribati is facing: Population explosion, garbage and rubbish environmental catastrophe and finally, yes, the rising sea levels.
Kiribati, an island republic in the Central Pacific, comprises 33 coral atolls and isles stretching along the equator. With lagoons and white-sand beaches, many of its islands are uninhabited, offering a remote setting for fishing, diving and bird-watching. The crowded capital, South Tarawa, made up of small islets, retains remnants of WWII battles fought on its shores, and is known for folk dancing and handicrafts.

Kiribati Travel Guide

Kiribati Travel Guide: Curving its way above and below the equator, the Republic of Kiribati (pronounced 'Kiri-bas') encompasses the Gilbert, Phoenix and Line Islands, and was known under British rule as the Gilbert Islands. Measured by land size Kiribati is a tiny nation of just over 810 sq km, but its 33 atolls span a huge 3.5 million sq km of the Pacific. Most atolls surround turquoise lagoons and barely rise above the surrounding ocean, so it's rare to be out of the sight and sound of the sea.

Kiribati's recent colonial and WWII history has had little impact on the outer islands, where the people subsist on coconuts, breadfruit and fish as they have done for centuries. Even on the main island, Tarawa, most locals live in traditional raised thatched huts. Western influence is increasing, though, in the form of cars, bars, movies and the Internet, and inevitably there's an escalating urban drift from the outer islands to Tarawa.

The people of the islands are known as I-Kiribati. Wide-eyed children may chirp a bold 'mauri' (hello) to passing strangers, while their elders tend towards a laconic raise of an eyebrow in greeting. Nothing happens fast here, so wind down, relax and enjoy living on island time.

Visit Kiribati

On our trip around the world we wanted to go a little off the tourist trail and found our way to Tarawa, Kiribati. You can find Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands quite North from New Zealand above the Equator.

We had two weeks in Kiribati, and it was an experience. The islands are not ready for tourists but still make an effort welcoming travellers in. The last two nights we spent at Tepon Te Keekee Ecolodge. It was gorgeous. After crossing the channel with the ferry man we walk to a totally deserted resort with no one home. We continued snooping until we found an overwater bungalo with 2 chairs, a bed and a mosquito net and I assumed that it was our new home. Later in the day we found someone in the kitchen and decided to have lunch. They made battered fish, and fish curry served with fresh vegetables which are hard to come by in these islands! Continueing into the evening someone eventually asks us if we are staying there... we say yes... and then i assumed that was our 'Checking in'.

When in Tarawa we stayed at a place called Dreamers with Richard and Beta. They definitely became our home and really make you feel like you are part of their family while staying there.
