Location
1. Capernaum is located on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee.
2. Capernaum was located on the Via Maris, which was the main international highway of the known world during the time of Christ.
3. Today, Capernaum is shared between two sites. The Franciscan site receives around 90% of visitors as it has the synagogue, Peter’s home, village ruins, ancient artifacts, and access to the beach. The Greek Orthodox site has chosen to remain unexcavated and serene.

Historical Background
1. The name Capernaum is derived from two words, Caper, which means village, and Naum, which means rest, and is also from the title, Nahum. Therefore, some believe that the town was named after the Prophet Nahum, and some believe it was simply a place of rest.
2. Capernaum was a fishing village with a population of around 1,000 during the time of Christ. It encompassed what is today both the Franciscan and Greek Orthodox sites.
3. Capernaum became the hometown of Jesus after He moved from his boyhood home of Nazareth. It also became the ministry base of Christ during His ministry on earth (Matthew 4:13–17).
4. Capernaum is mentioned more than any other town around the Sea of Galilee.
5. Capernaum was also the home of Peter, James, Andrew, John, and Matthew.
6. The Synagogue in Capernaum was built by a Roman Centurion of whom Jesus healed his servant.
7. The synagogue that existed during Christ’s time is made from black basalt stone, and its foundations are under the current synagogue, built out of limestone.
8. The current synagogue was built in the 4th century and was quite luxurious and impressive.
9. The home of the Apostle Peter has been identified and now has a large modern church built over it. The location of Peter’s home is certain and has been verified by many substantial archaeological excavations.
10. Greek Orthodox site of Capernaum. This church was built in 1931 and dedicated to the twelve apostles.

Places of Interest
1. The home of Peter and Jesus
2. Village Houses
3. The Synagogue
4. Ancient Artifacts
5. Capernaum Greek Orthodox Site
6. Capernaum National Park

Capernaum in the Bible
1. Christ left Nazareth to live and set up His ministry base in Capernaum (Matthew 4:13-16).
2. Jesus frequently taught in the Synagogue in Capernaum (Mark 1:21–28).
3. Jesus healed Peter’s mother and many others here in Capernaum (Mark 1:29–34).
4. In Capernaum, Jesus forgave and healed a paralyzed man. This likely happened right at the home where Jesus lived (Mark 2:1–5).
5. Christ marveled at the great faith of a centurion in Capernaum (Luke 7:1–10).
6. The Parables of the Kingdom were preached close to Capernaum (Matthew 13:1–3).
7. The miracle of Peter getting money out of the mouth of a fish to pay the temple tax for himself and Jesus happened in Capernaum (Matthew 17:24-27).
8. Jesus called Matthew, the tax collector, close to Capernaum (Matthew 9:9).
9. Capernaum was one of the three towns Christ cursed because of their unbelief in Him (Matthew 11:23–24).

Faith Lesson from Capernaum
1. Christ astonished the large crowds who followed him because He taught with authority. He was completely different from all other teachers because He was God in the flesh. Are we astonished today as we read Christ’s teachings in His Word?
2. Christ healed multitudes of people in and around Capernaum. He also showed He was God as He forgave their sins. Forgiving sins is something only God can do. Do we believe Christ was God in the flesh and full deity?
3. Christ marveled at the great faith of a Roman Centurion. Do we trust God in such a way that He would marvel at our faith?
4. Unfortunately, Christ cursed the town of Capernaum because of their unbelief in Him. After all they had seen, and after many of them had been healed by Jesus, they still were filled with unbelief. Unbelief is, therefore, a sin. Do we have unbelief in Christ and who He claimed to be? Do we also have unbelief in trusting Him in our daily lives when things don’t seem to make sense?

BOOKS ABOUT ISRAEL BY TODD FINK:

Location
1. The Sea of Galilee is located in the northern part of Israel, known as the Galilee region. Therefore, it’s called the Sea of Galilee.
2. It is also referred to in Scripture by other names like Ginnosar, Lake of Gennesar, Gennesaret, Sea of Chinneroth, Kinneret, and Sea of Tiberias.
3. It’s about 70 miles (115 Km.) north of Jerusalem and about 27 miles (45 Km.) east of the Mediterranean Sea.
4. It is a freshwater lake about 8 miles (13 km.) wide by about 12 miles (19 km.) long, and 150 ft. (46 m.) deep.
5. It is located about 700 ft. (213 m.) below sea level.
6. It is the main freshwater source for much of Israel.
7. Because of its location, storms can arise quickly and drop down onto its surface without much warning.
8. The Sea of Galilee was located on a main crossroad of the known world during Christ ministry on earth. This international highway was called the “Via Maris” (Way of the Sea), and linked travel between the three continents of, Africa, Asia, and Europe.
9. Travelers from these 3 continents were forced to use this route as there were few other options for traveling to and from each continent. This was so because there was a desert to the east that was impassible due to lack of water, and the Mediterranean Sea was located to the west which was not a realistic option for travel as it was expensive, and ships were scarce.
10. The Via Maris passed right along the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, and there are old ruins and markers showing its existence.
11. The north shore of the Sea of Galilee was even more traveled than the roads and routes leading through Jerusalem.
12. Oftentimes, we might think Christ was hiding out somewhere in a remote location. However, just the opposite was true. He chose the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee (and Capernaum was located at a key place along this route) as a center stage so His message would reach as many people as possible in the world.
13. By spending most of His ministry time in the northern Galilee area, Christ’s miracles would travel by word of mouth to the ends of the earth. This laid the groundwork and sowed the seeds of the Gospel to the rest of the known world so that the evangelization work done later by the apostles would be easier and more acceptable to those who heard the message about Christ.
Historical Background
1. Abraham entered the Promised Land through the gateway of the Sea of Galilee when he first journeyed from Ur of the Chaldeans.
2. In Matthew 4 we find that Jesus established his home ministry base in the town of Capernaum which is located on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee.
3. At least 6 of the 12 disciples were from right around the Sea of Galilee. These were Peter, Andrew, James, John, Matthew, and Philip.
4. According to Acts 1:11, the rest of the disciples were from the Galilee area as well.

Israel . . . Land of the Bible . . . Land of Faith . . . the Holy Land, revered throughout recorded history as the cradle of monotheistic religion. For a person of faith whose beliefs are rooted in the Bible, there is no place on earth like the Holy Land. In this narrow strip of land lies the source of religious belief of much of mankind. Here, amongst the barren hills and fertile plains, man’s spirit learned to soar and from here a new message went out to all the world: “. . . and many peoples shall come, and say, “Come, let us go up to the Mountain of the Lord, to the House of the God of Jacob; that He may teach us His ways and that we may walk in His paths. For out of Zion (Hill next to Jerusalem) will go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem (Isaiah 2:3,4).
The unique factor about the Holy Land is its special location in the World. Situated as it is, straddling the divide between Africa and Asia, the area has almost always been a battleground. Wave after wave of conquerors poured into it, anxious to control the strategic trade routes linking the centers of the ancient world. It’s not by accident that it’s virtually in the center of the world. In God’s master plan of creation, He decided to place Israel exactly in the center of His creation. Located on a tiny land bridge between Africa and Asia, there is no other way to get between the two of them except through Israel. It’s located on the crossroads of the world. Whoever wanted to trade between the two continents, or control the known world, had to conquer and control Israel. For this reason, there have been more wars and events that have taken place in Israel than any other country on earth. God positioned Israel in its unique location in order to influence the world and be on “Center Stage” so all of creation would know that He alone is God.
For nearly 2,000 years, Christian visitors from all over the world have come to the Holy Land, the land of their spiritual heritage. With Bible in hand, they have walked the places Jesus walked and prayed in the places He preached and prayed. For Christians, Israel is a place like no other. It provides them a one of a kind opportunity to experience the land of the Bible, to deepen their faith, and to be spiritually transformed for a lifetime.

Holyland Trip Vlog - Day 10 - TIBERIAS, GALILEE (EP 10)

EP.10: It's our last day in Israel, we went to Mount Tabor, Mount of Beatitudes, Church of the Multiplication, Church of the Primacy of Saint Peter - Mensa Christi, Capernaum, had a Peter's Fish for lunch, ride a boat passing through the Galilee Sea, and had a chance to visit the Jordan River.

- Mount Tabor
The mountain where Christian tradition places the Transfiguration of Jesus. Mount Tabor stands some 420 metres above the plain in lower Galilee, 7km east of Nazareth
- Mount of Beatitudes
It's believed to be the setting for Jesus’ most famous discourse, the Sermon on the Mount, is one of the most beautifully serene places in the Holy Land. The Mount of Beatitudes is also traditionally understood to be the place where Jesus met his apostles after his Resurrection and commissioned them to “make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:16-20).
- Church of Multiplication & Church of the Primary of St Peter
These are located in Tranquil Tabgha, on the north-western shore of the Sea of Galilee, is best known for Christ’s miraculous multiplication of loaves and fish to feed a multitude. But it is also remembered for Jesus’ third appearance to his disciples after his Resurrection, when he tested and commissioned St Peter as leader of his Church.
- Capernaum
became Jesus’ home town and the scene of many of his miracles. It was also the home of the first disciples Jesus called — the fishermen Peter, Andrew, James and John, and the tax collector Matthew (who as Levi collected taxes in the customs office).
In this town:
• Jesus worshipped and taught in the synagogue — where his teaching made a deep impression on the local people because, unlike the scribes, he taught with authority. (Mark 1:21-22)
• In the same synagogue, Jesus promised the Eucharist in his “I am the bread of life” discourse: “Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.” (John 6:22-59)
• Jesus and healed many people of illness or possession by the devil, including Peter’s mother-in-law and the daughter of Jairus, the leader of the synagogue.
• Jesus pronounced a curse on the town, along with Bethsaida and Chorazin, because so many of its inhabitants refused to believe in him.
- Sea of Galilee
It was around the usually serene waters of the Sea of Galilee that Jesus began his public ministry, teaching in the synagogues and curing the sick. Crowds flocked to him, “for he taught as one having authority, and not as their scribes” (Matthew 7:29).
- Jordan River
It is significant for Christians because John the Baptist baptised Jesus in the waters of the Jordan. The prophets Elijah and Elisha also crossed the river dry-shod; and the Syrian general Naaman was healed of leprosy after washing in the Jordan at Elisha’s direction.

The Galilee - A Secret Christian Tour - Following the Steps of Jesus - Our Holy Land Tour

Located in Israel's north, the Galilee region is most commonly associated with, on the one hand, mountainous scenery and a luscious landscape and, on the other hand, the famous Sea of Galilee. But the area has many more hidden treasures to offer, from historic monuments to excellent observation posts.

Galilee - A Secret Christian Community
Most notably, the Galilee region was Jesus' home, his place of teaching and the sight of many of his miracle works. Its relation to the life of Christ has made the region home to numerous churches and monasteries. In addition, several Arab-Christian villages call this area home. Located in and around the city of Nazareth(some 15 miles from the Sea of Galilee), towns such as Fassuta , Milya, Jesh and Ilabun demonstrate a unique breed of Christianity with an oriental flavor, well worth a visit when on a Holy Land tour.

Galilee - Berenice Mountain and the Anchor Church
Situated just south of Tiberias, Berenice Mountain was named after one of the Roman Emperor Titus' lovers, infamous for having buried over 10 husbands.

With Tiberias and the Sea of Galilee at its feet and the Golan Heights only a few miles away, the view from atop Mount Berenice is exquisite. Added to the breathtaking view, visitors will find here the ruins of a Byzantine church, uncovered in the 1990s and featuring unusual cultic ornamentation. Though most likely not its original name, the church has been dubbed the AnchorChurch and has been known by this name since it's unearthing.

When the Muslims gained control over the city of Tiberias in 1187, the Anchor Church was severely damaged. All that is left of it are the ruins we see today. However, thanks to the church's slight distance from Tiberias and its location atop a mountain, these ruins have remained in tact and did not suffer further destruction over the centuries. The thick basalt walls have also helped to preserve the church's beautiful mosaics which remain, to this day, one of its greatest draws.

Christian tours to Israel don't always make a point of visiting the Anchor Church, but if you have time to spare be sure to spend it here!

Galilee - Nain Village and Jesus' Miracle Work
Located some 4 miles south of Mount Tabor, about halfway between Nazarethand the city of Afula, Nain ( Naim in Hebrew) is mentioned in the Gospel of Luke as one of the towns in Jesus' Ministry.

The scriptures specify that it was in town of Nain that Jesus, while touring the area with his apostles, witnessed the funeral of a child. Hearing the mother weep over the death of her only child, Jesus resurrected the boy and brought him back into his mother's arms.

In the 19 th century the Franciscan Order decided to invest in this village and bought several acres of its land. A church was erected on the land and its maintenance and upkeep placed in the hands of the Arab family that lives next door.

The humble church has remained nameless and generally hidden from the public for many years. However, it remains one of those hidden gems not many know and that are the perfect addition to your Christian tour.

HOLY LAND - JORDAN RIVER, SEA OF GALILEE, CAPERNAUM VLOG

We travel to the Holy Land to visit the Sea of Galilee, Capernaum, and the River Jordan and follow Jesus' footsteps. We start at the Sea of Galilee, the site where Jesus walked on water and performed many miracles. It is the largest lake in Israel.

We swim in the sea before embarking on a Sea of Galilee Boat Ride with Troy Tours. Here, we read the excerpt of the Bible where the Sea of Galilee was mentioned. Then we visit The Yigal Allon Center to see the Jesus Boat an ancient boat from the time of Jesus, found miraculously in the 1980s.

We also visit the Sermon on the Mount area, where Jesus gave his famous sermon.

Next we visit Capernaum, where Jesus performed his healings and the site of a 4th century synagogue.

Lastly, we visit the River Jordan, the baptismal site of Jesus. The River Jordan is where many people travel to be baptized. The River Jordan flows to the Dead Sea.
