Greenland - Since 8 years I'm traveling to this magical country. Today quiet and untouched places are becoming more and more rare. On my first visit to Greenland, I was fascinated by the incredible power of nature that can be felt everywhere. But during the last years things have changed. The amount of icebergs is increasing savagely. Glaciers I'm visiting every year are retreating not meters but kilometers a year and the unending amount of ice seems to be endless. There is nothing more beautiful than an iceberg - everyone is unique and the light reflecting from its surface is magical. It's sad how close beauty and decay can be seen in an iceberg. This movie is is an appreciation to the ice - for me the most amazing aggregate state of water.

Behind the scenes
For this short film I travelled to Greenland with my drones several times. Always with the target of a certain region in a certain light situation. The shots from the calving glacier took me 4 days at the Eqi Glacier and over 70 battery charges for only 4 usable shots of a few seconds. It's a very hard intention to film the very right moment on a glacier front of about 6km wide - especially close up. But the hardest thing of flying in Greenland is the fact, that every 2-3 minutes the difference between the magnetic north and the geographic north (which are not the same place - especially so far north) causing a fatal p-gps flight error and the drone is flying away (also the camera's horizon). But at the end every single flight was worth it - filming Icebergs from above is one of the most beautiful things I've ever done. Additionally I used the drone to scout the landing spot and look for polar bears. The best thing for bears and humans is to not meet each other on shore.

Greenland - August 2016

My trip to Greenland in August 2016 - please don't be too harsh on my first attempt at a video with sound! The glacier scenes are shaky as I was on a boat with cold fingers! The meat market shows Reindeer, Musk Ox and Seal. New inmates at the prison are given their own door keys and a gun - so they can demonstrate trust to hunt for their families - such a fascinating country... CKWIDaardvark28

Arctic Spring in 4K - Greenland 2016

A spectacular trip to Greenland. This video is documentary style of my trip. A hello to all the friendly people I met there; even after listening to my jokes.
The music is by a very popular Greenland composer. Although I don't understand the lyrics the music is very likeable.

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:
Welcome to Greenland.
We're here on the Greenland Explorer withQuark Expeditions and we're joined by the Expedition Leader, Alex McNeil.

Can you just run us through what maybe 24
hours might be like on the ship here?

An average day for me would probably be waking
up around 5 O'clock, and heading to the bridge

looking at local conditions, ice weather,
current, assessing our progress, towards our

proposed destination and looking for any opportunities
along the way.

And the essentially we have a time where we
plan to wake the passengers up.

Usually anywhere from 5:30 to 7:30 at the
latest, sometimes we give people a little

bit of a sleep in.
Then we go out on a morning excursion for

sure, for example, this morning we had a zodiac
cruise and a landing, the tide just got out,

we had a really good extended hike, and we're
going to assess opportunities.

Ready for a great day on the water!
Ship cruise the entirety of the Fjord, it's

about 60 miles
Picturesque jagged peaks, glaciers, that will

be great regardless, and who knows what opportunities
will present for zodiac cruises and other

adventures.
I forgot one thing, we're gonna get you to

jump in the water at some point too.
Oh,

Because we're back in the ice, and we've got
a little bit colder water, so it's time for

a polar plunge.
I like that, it's a little bit colder water.
We want it to be as cold as possible so people
can get the true feeling of the Polar Plunge.

If you go on a Quark Expedition Ship, make
sure to do the polar plunge, whether it's

in the Antarctic or it's up here in Greenland,
do it!

And Vodka is your reward, mine's empty.
Another fantastic day here in Greenland, as

you can see, the landscape never stops changing.
See ya!

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Wow, behind me is Jacobs Harbour, and this

is a harbour filled with ice bergs that come
from Jacobs Glacier.

And as we were told, all of these ice bergs,
eventually make it out of here and travel
all the way to Canada.
Walking in the Tundra in the Arctic.

It's the spirit of adventure,
You never know what's going to happen and

that's what great about the Arctic.
It's just adventure around every corner.

Cheers from Greenland.
So you know if you need any motivation to
go to the Arctic, well you got it now.
Come to Greenland, we'll see you there.

Greenland Expedition 2016

Trip to Greenland with Quark Expeditions Team.
The pictorial record of our trip in Greenland with Quark Expeditions in September 13-22, 2016.
As the last unspoiled land mass in the World with the largest amount of ICE and SNOW after Antarctica, Greenland holds to key to the future of the World. Its ICE Sheet sometimes 3000 meters thick is under great threat from Global Warming as we have witnessed it with our own eyes. We were also lucky enough to witness a lone Polar Bear feeding on a seal which is becoming a rare event as the ICE recedes and leaves Polar Bears stranded or limited in his hunting territory. We can only hope that humanity will soon realize this grave danger and stop the progress of Global Warming so that future generations will experience the wonders we were able to see. I hope you enjoy these pictures and videos as much as we did while taking them.

2016 EAST GREENLAND Kayaking TIME-LAPSE

Just a couple experimental time-lapse video clips from a 10-day sea kayak trip in East Greenland.

The first clip was shot from the kayak in Sermilik Fjord and was made at 1 frame every 2 seconds. Interestingly, this was nearly synchronized with the pace of my paddle strokes, which somewhat masks out the side-t-side rocking motion of the kayak.

The clips of icebergs moving in the fjord currents were shot at 1 frame every minute, then rendered at 15 frames/second. Interesting how water currents running in different directions at different depths push the icebergs of different sizes around in different directions, even causing neighboring icebergs to collide with each other.
