Grand Canyon Rim to River Hike Guide

???? MAPS & HIKE LINKS:
???? LATEST GEAR LIST:
♥️ SAY THANKS:

The Grand Canyon “rim to river” hike from the South Rim to Colorado is the one hike that the NPS asks you not to do. Why? Beginning hikers underestimate the effort of hiking back up to the rim after enjoying a casual downhill to the river. I’ve written this guide to help experienced hikers who understand the challenges of the “rim to river,” and for those who are not experienced yet will do it anyway. This guide gives you all the information you need to do the hike safely if you are up to it and the conditions are right.

Grand Canyon Rim to Rim - We got a cabin at Phantom Ranch!

Grand Canyon Rim to Rim - We got a cabin at Phantom Ranch!

The holy grail of Grand Canyon trips involves a stay at Phantom Ranch. It only took me two years of trying, but I finally got a cabin. This meant we could ditch the heavy backpacks and go with day hiking gear, while still splitting the Rim to Rim hike into two days. Not to mention having a stay at what is basically the hotel with the best views in the world. This was happening!

We decided to hike from the Grand Canyon North Rim to the South Rim to save some of the elevaton gain. We shuttled trucks from the South Rim to the North, then set up camp outside the park on the north rim so we could get an early start.

6:00AM, we were at the North Kaibab Trailhead, ready to start our long day. The North Kaibab trail descends dramatically into the Grand Canyon in the first few miles, dropping thousands of feet in elevation. After a while you come to Roaring Springs and the Manzanita Resthouse. This is where you meet up with the creek where you will be near flowing water all the way down to the Colorado.

About halfway through the hike to Phantom Ranch, you come up to Ribbon Falls. Ribbon Falls is a unique and beautiful waterfall that is not to be missed! Well, unless you're Tina and you're completely exhausted and ready to get to your cabin at Phantom Ranch. I went solo and don't regret it for a second. Ribbon Falls is amazing.

Continuing on, you drop further and further into the canyon. The walls close in on you in the infamous Box. The Box in the Grand Canyon traps heat and can be brutally hot at times. Luckily, the creek is nearby for relief.

And then you're there. Phantom Ranch comes into sight. Whether you're day hiking rim to rim or overnighting, it's definitely worth a stop at the canteen at Phantom Ranch to grab a lemonade or other snacks and supplies.

But for us, this was our destination for day 1. We had an amazing cabin, complete with electricity, a flushing toilet, beds and even air conditioning! I'm definitely not used to that kind of luxury when I hike. There are also showers! The vibe at Phantom Ranch is not to be missed. So laid back and chill.

We woke up and hit the trail by 3AM on day 2. I'm disappointed we missed the views of the Bright Angel Trail from the Silver Bridge up to Indian Garden Campground, but it was September and the heat was oppressive. For about a mile after crossing the Silver Bridge, you are on a trail on a sheer cliff adjacent to the Colorado River. I can't imagine the views and will definitely be back to see them when it's cooler.

At Indian Garden Campgrounds, it was time for a quick refill on water and a snack. Then it was on to the relentless switchbacks of the Bright Angel Trail. The Bright Angel Trail offers great views of the canyon below, but it seems to go on forever.

And then....that's it. You're at the parking lot and your journey is over. The crowds of tourists admiring the overlooks are jarring, yet you barely notice them because....you just hiked the Grand Canyon.

Overall, it's life changing. The Grand Canyon has me hooked and I can't wait to go back. Again and again and again.

Grand Canyon Hiking down South Kaibab 360°

Hiking down the South Kaibab trail of the Grand Canyon on May 13, 2018. Put on your Google Cardboard if you got 'em.

Grand Canyon South Kaibab hike down on March 14, 2023.

Hiking down the Grand Canyon on South Kaibab trail on March 14, 2023. Distance was 11.8 km (7.3 mile), descent was 1440 meters (4724 ft).
It took us 5 hours. We hiked the same day back up to the south rim using Bright Angel trail that is longer and took us 6 hours. I like the South Kaibab trail much more – the views of the Grand Canyon are more breathtaking.

South Kaibab/Bright Angel Loop, Grand Canyon National Park

Exploring the Whites hike down the South Kaibab trail, along the Colorado River and over to Bright Angel Camp, up through the Indian Garden and then the Bright Angel trail back to the rim. I did this hike in 7 hours and 8 minutes, trying to avoid the heat of the day, but it still got to almost 120 degrees down by the river. Though not recommended as a single day hike by the National Park Service, if you are up to it, this is a wonderful hike taking you through a myriad of environs and geologies with countless incredible vistas along the way. While there was plenty of water on the way up, there was no water available on the entire South Kaibab trail until I got to the camp on the far side of the river, so plan accordingly. Also, the guidance is that the temperature climbs 5 degrees for every thousand feet you descend, and since you are descending about 5000 feet, this gain in temperature has to be part of the calculus used in planning this hike. Enjoy!

South KAIBAB Trail Grand Canyon Rim To River Hiking Video

This South Kaibab Trail Grand Canyon Rim to Rim Hiking video takes you from the South Kaibab Trailhead to Phantom Ranch across the Colorado River. Hiking the Rim To River trail in the Grand Canyon is an amazing experience! Enjoy some views from the South Rim before hiking South Kaibab in the dark until you emerge into a radiant sunrise!

This unforgettable adventure includes this trek down the South Kaibab Trail to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and a haul of a hike up the Bright Angel Trail. Together, they form an amazing 17-mile day hike! The hike up the Bright Angel Trail will be posted as a separate video and allow you to complete the journey from Phantom Ranch back to the top of the South Rim of the Grand Canyon!

As always, we will hike heartfully, gratefully, and playfully noticing and moving through some fantastic parts of nature! Use the time at Skeleton Point to have a mindfulness moment :). I was thrilled to have cool, cloudy weather for much of the hike :). So, grab your trail running day pack, and let's do this!

VR 360 Grand Canyon View

Hiking down from Ooh Aah Lookout to camp at Bright Angel on the South Kaibab Trail.

Breathtaking Grand Canyon. South Kaibab Trail to Skeleton Point

One of the most amazing experiences in a lifetime. The views were astonishing, and the Trail gave us this enormous feeling of freedom and how vast and powerful nature actually is.

South Kaibab Trail to Skeleton Point and back took us 6 hours. We were there in September, so it was quite cold at the top but nice and warm down the Grand Canyon.

Tip: when watching a sunset from the top - warm clothes are essential because when the sun goes over the horizon it gets very cold immediately.

We are happy to share this video with you. Enjoy :)

Grand Canyon National Park - Kaibab - Tonto - Bright Angel Trails Dayhike

Considered one of the seven wonders of the world, this is a dayhike on three great trails starting downhill on South Kaibab, which follows a ridge out to Skeleton Point allowing for 360-degree views of the canyon. Then, we headed west on Tonto trail, meeting up with Bright Angel Trail at Indian Garden, only to hike back up to the South Rim.

All of this adventure wrapped up with our unique personalities and finding nature along the way.

South Kaibab Trail to Ooh Aah Point ???? Grand Canyon Hike ????

Easy hike in the Grand Canyon. Hiking into the Grand Canyon, Do you want to hike in Grand Canyon National Park? Hike South Kaibab Trail to Ooh Aah Point, Hike the South Rim

We will discuss all you need to know as you plan your hike on South Kaibab Trail to Ooh Ahh Point including a packing list and what gear to hike with. We’ll discuss how to get to the trailhead, a brief history of Kaibab Trail and two most important rules of the trail.

TETON Sports Oasis 18L Hydration Pack with Free 2-Liter Water Bladder:

Here are the Merrell Men's shoes I wore on our hike:

The first aid kit we carry:

Trekking Poles:

In conflict with the entrepreneurs operating trails into the canyon like Bright Angel Trail, the National park Service built South Kaibab Trail in the 1920s to have their own trail down to the Colorado River and the North Kaibab Trail to create the first rim to rim option. The south Kaibab Trail is the shortest route to the Colorado river at 6.5 miles to achieve the almost mile elevation change. Keen eyes can still see holes in the rock where construction crews blasted rock to create the trail. The trail was designed by engineers for hikers and the trail has lesser grade than Bright Angel and is better designed for a four foot width along the complete route. The design of the trail also ensured full sun so that the trail could be used year-round. Mule trains run supplies down to phantom ranch and other facilities to support activity inside the canyon.

The trail is located off South Kaibab Road. South Kaibab is only accessible in the Summer via shuttle. The area is accessed using Yaki Point Road off 64. We stayed in Trailer Village. So, we rode our bicycles on the bike trails from trailer village along the south rim to Kaibab Trail. Traveling the rim by bike is our preferred method. There are many canyon overlooks on the bike trail that are photo worthy. The trailhead usually has water seasonally May to October. At South Kaibab the trailhead is located up the hill behind the bathrooms next to the mule corral.

Ooh Aah Point is a 1.8 mile round trip hike that takes about two hours to complete. The elevation change from the rim to Ooh Aah point is 790 feet. So this hike is a little easier to complete than Bright Angel Trail to the 1.5 mile rest house and the views are totally different.. The trail works the canyon wall with many switchbacks as the trail descends down into the Canyon. The trail is similar in terrain with steps lightly sandy and stone footing. Between the trailhead and ooh aah point there are no markers so you will want to set your stopwatch and pay attention to how much time you are hiking. Our experience is for every hour hiking down plan on two hours to hike back out. So, if you have 1.5 hours plan on turning around 30 minutes after you leave the canyon rim.

There is no water on the trail so make sure you pack 2 liters of water. We recommend the Teton Sports Oasis Hydration pack with a 2 liter bladder. Any hike into the canyon should have plenty of water. Even though this is a shorter hike we packed as if it would be a normal day hike. We packed protein bars, peanut butter crackers, salty snacks and treats like gummy worms for motivation. Other items in our pack include trail maps, compass, first aid kit, camera, and binoculars.

Trekking Poles are helpful on this trail if you like to use them. We also recommend hiking shoes as the sandy stone can be slippery and its nice to have good traction. The hike is generally in full sun so Make sure you wear sunglasses and dress in layers for the temperature at the rim and what the temperature will be in the canyon, with little wind.

Rule 1 is to always yield to mules. Move to the uphill canyon wall side of the trail away from the edge. Follow the guides instructions and then return hiking after the mules have moved 50 feet beyond your location. Rule 2, if on the way down you come across hikers coming out of the canyon yield to them as well and let them pass without getting in their way. You will appreciate the same respect when hiking back up.
