Gorilla trekking safaris in Uganda

To provide a detailed answer about gorilla trekking safaris in Uganda, we will break it down into several sections, including the location, permits, best time to visit, where to stay, and what to expect during the trek.

Location:

Uganda, a country in East Africa, is home to approximately half of the world’s mountain gorilla population. The majority of these gorillas can be found in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi, located in the southwestern part of Uganda, is more popular due to its larger gorilla population and offers better chances of encountering these magnificent creatures. Mgahinga, on the other hand, is situated in the southwestern corner of Uganda, near the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Permits:

To participate in a gorilla trekking safari in Uganda, you must obtain a permit from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). These permits are limited in number to control the number of visitors and minimize the impact on the gorillas. The cost of a permit is $700 for foreign non-residents, $600 for foreign residents, and 250,000 Ugandan Shillings for East African citizens. Permits can be booked through a local tour operator or directly through the Uganda Wildlife Authority’s website.

Best Time to Visit:

The best time to go on a gorilla trekking safari in Uganda is during the dry seasons, which are from June to early September and December to February. During these months, the weather is generally dry and sunny, making the trekking experience more comfortable. However, it is essential to note that this is also the peak tourist season, so permits may be in higher demand.

Where to Stay:

There are numerous accommodation options available near the gorilla trekking parks, ranging from luxury lodges to budget-friendly campsites. Some popular options include:

Bwindi Lodge: A high-end lodge offering luxurious accommodations and stunning views of the forest.
Gorilla Forest Camp: A mid-range option situated within the park, offering a unique experience in close proximity to the gorillas.
Rushaga Gorilla Havens Lodge: A budget-friendly option with comfortable rooms and excellent service.
Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge: A budget-friendly lodge with beautiful views of the surrounding hills and forests.
What to Expect During the Trek:

Gorilla trekking in Uganda typically involves an early morning start, as the treks usually begin around 8:00 AM. After a briefing from your guide, you will be assigned a gorilla group and set off into the forest with a team of trackers and guides. The trek can last anywhere from 2 to 8 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla group and the terrain. Once you find the gorillas, you will spend an hour observing and photographing them from a close distance. It is essential to remember that you must maintain a minimum distance of 7 meters (21 feet) from the gorillas and follow the guidelines provided by your guide to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Bwindi Gorilla National Park; Uganda Africa

AFRICAUG.COM presents BWINDI IMPENETRABLE NATIONAL PARK

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park lies in southwestern Uganda on the edge of the Rift Valley.

Its mist-covered hillsides are blanketed by one of Uganda's oldest and most biologically diverse rainforests, which dates back over 25,000 years and contains almost 400 species of plants.

More famously, this “impenetrable forest” also protects an estimated 320 mountain gorillas – roughly half of the world’s population, including several habituated groups, which can be tracked.
