A Day In Gibraltar ???????? Discovering the Mediterranean with Princess Cruises???? | 197 Countries, 3 Kids

Join us as we take you on a quick tour through Gibraltar, a.k.a the “Key to the Mediterranean”.

Centuries of history and vast cultural diversity shaped this British overseas territory into a must-visit tourist destination. As the home of the European Pillar of Hercules (the Rock of Gibraltar), this place offers breathtaking views of two continents, Europe and Africa.

The UK influence became evident as soon as we got off the Sky Princess. Even the girls started sounding very British all of a sudden :-)

For such a small place, Gibraltar offers many interesting sights. From the famous red phone booths and police officers with distinctive tophats to mega yacht hotels and Mediterranean-style cafés - Gibraltar has a peculiar mixture of Spanish vibrance and British tradition.

Shortly after disembarking the ship we were welcomed by the Grand Casemates Gates that led us into the main Gibraltar square.

After a short walk through the busy streets of Gibraltar, we decided to visit the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. Since we failed to find any public transport, we continued walking all the way to the top and we didn’t regret it because the road offered spectacular waterfront views. Thanks to the nice sunny weather, we were even able to see the mountains of Morocco on the coast of Africa.

As soon as we reached the top, we saw the Pillar of Hercules - a landmark paying tribute to Gibraltar as an important financial and trading point.

While deciding on what to see next, Pepe had a great idea to do a little prank on the tourist busses arriving at the viewpoint for pictures. It was even more fun because we convinced other tourists to join in on it with us.

Our next stop was the Apes den. The Upper Rock Nature Reserve is home to the famous Barbary macaque apes - the only wild monkeys in Europe. The last time we were here, there were many more of them around. Luckily, we still got the chance to take great close-up shots of these funny little creatures.

On our way down, we took a different route that led us back to the main square and cruise ship quite fast.

Back on board, we sat down for dinner at a restaurant that offered amazing Sunset views.
Then the girls discovered a secret elevator that took us up and down for about 20 minutes before we finally got to the 18th floor.

Later in the evening, we spent time relaxing in the hot tub, sipping on some nice drinks as the Sun slowly set down in the West.

This evening was made extra special by the ship horns playing a short melody announcing that we were about to set sail.

And if that wasn’t magical enough, we went to see a magician perform some entertaining tricks and illusions.

After all that relaxing time, we needed music to get us in our usual rhythm and the amazing Phillip Browne delivered another perfect performance.

Talking about ending the night on a high note, we decided to treat ourselves to some delicious desserts and some more dancing!

Enjoy the video!

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. It has an area of 6.7 km² and is bordered to the north by Spain. Surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, Gibraltar also has contact with the Atlantic Ocean. The landscape is dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar and below is the densely populated town area, home to over 30,000 people, primarily Gibraltarians. The official language of Gibraltar is English. Most Gibraltarians converse in Llanito, their vernacular which is mostly based on Andalusian Spanish but with numerous loan words from English as well other Mediterranean languages. A Victorian post box of standard 1887 UK design in use.
Europa point is the southernmost point of Gibraltar. The Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque is located at Europa Point. The building was a gift from King Fahd of Saudi Arabia and took two years to build.
Trinity Lighthouse at Europa Point(Victoria Tower) is a lighthouse on the southeastern tip of the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar. You can see the views of North Africa across the Strait of Gibraltar including Ceuta and the Rif Mountains of Morocco Gibraltar’s unique position proved invaluable during World War 2, Driving up to the St Michael's cave. St. Michael's Cave, located halfway up the western slope of the Rock, is the most prominent and is a popular tourist attraction. The monkeys of Gibraltar are the main attraction at the Rock of Gibraltar. There are about 300 Barbary Macaques living on the rock. They are sometimes called “Barbary Apes” because they don’t have tails .the Barbary macaque is one of the best-known Old World monkey species. The Government of Gibraltar officially takes care of the monkeys, they are given immunizations and each are named and catalogued. The Michael’s cave was created by rainwater slowly seeping through the limestone rock, turning into a weak carbonic acid which gradually dissolved the rock. The cave is in a completely natural state, although fully lit and kitted out with ropes to aid minor climbing and scrambling. It has been in use as a theatre since the early sixties with capacity for 600 persons. The Gibraltar World Music Festival is held here each year. From the base station near the southern end of Main Street, next to Alameda Gardens, the cable car travels up the Rock of Gibraltar to the Ape's Den midway up the Rock, and then to the top of the Rock. After saying goodbye to the Michael's cave we headed towards the tunnel that was made during World War 2.Named the Great North Road and built in 1940, the mile-long complex was built deep inside the Rock to protect soldiers and equipment from Luftwaffe bombing raids. The tunnel is one of the largest man made underground spaces without roof supports. The tunnels house everything 16,000 soldiers needed to survive for 16 months - a telephone exchange, a generating station, a water desalination plant, a hospital ward, a bakery, a frozen food store, munitions stores and a station to repair damaged vehicles and passageways The tunnel network was so big that it needed its own power supplies. The Calpe Hole Generating Station supplied power to all areas under the Rock along the Great North Road. There are similar generating stations in other areas on the mountain.A water pipe still runs the length of the Great North Road carrying fresh water towards residents properties from underground reservoirs.Few Pictures from the time of the tunnel construction are displayed in the tunnel. After the war, the tunnels were kept intact by the Ministry of Defence. They are currently used for training troops in underground warfare.
These are the secret World War Two tunnels dug into the Rock of Gibraltar to protect the Allies - and with 'streets' named after English towns so British troops could find their way around. Gibraltar was strategically important during the Second World War because it allowed the British to control access to the Mediterranean Sea.
After reaching back from Gibraltar, we made a quick trip to Malalga , had dinner, did some shopping and and enjoyed freshly-made churros! After a fun day, we headed back to our resort! We can see the runway of Gibraltar airport from here. The airport was constructed during World War II when Gibraltar was an important naval base for the British. The runway was later extended by reclaiming some land from the Bay of Gibraltar using the rock blasted from the Rock of Gibraltar while carrying out works on military tunnels.
Winston Churchill Avenue intersects the airport runway, and consequently has to be closed every time a plane lands or departs.

Things to Do in Gilbraltar | Gibraltar | Gibraltar Holidays | Visit Gibraltar | Europe

Things to Do in Gilbraltar | Gibraltar | Gibraltar Holidays | Visit Gibraltar | Europe

In this video, we take another look at the beautiful location of Gibraltar.

If you are looking for things to do in Gibraltar, there is so much to do for all the family from tours of the island to experiencing the local wildlife like the Gibraltar monkies.

Gilbraltar is an island located in the Atlantic Ocean, a few hundred miles off the coast of Africa. The island is approximately five square miles and has a population of about eleven thousand people. Gilbraltar was created when a volcanic eruption forced the ocean water to drain out, leaving behind an oval-shaped piece of land.

Gibraltar is a tiny British territory where the population speaks English. It’s located in the southern part of Spain, and it shares a border with Morocco to its north. The Rock of Gibraltar was discovered by Phoenicians looking for a place to trade their goods with Africans, who lived along the coast of Africa at that time.

There are tons of great things to do in Gibralter. For a nice, relaxing day out, you can go for a stroll on the Golden Mile and see some beautiful architecture along the way. You can also take a ferry to the nearby island of La Mamora (Gibraltar’s closest neighbor) and get some fresh seafood there.

The most popular activities include climbing to the top of Europe’s tallest mountain, visiting a cave that was used as a hideout by Spanish pirates and exploring the iconic Rock of Gibraltar.

If you are a history buff, Gibraltar is filled with World War II history to learn and explore.

This city is highly recommended either with family or for solo travel as a hub for cultural experience including flamenco music/dancing, tapas, amazing historical monuments and practically year-around sunshine!

Special thanks to Sons of Caliber for theme song: Falling for You and the Free Music Database for additional tracks used in video.
