Inside GIBRALTAR: Strange British Territory in Spain????????????????

Johnny Harris geography: I traveled to Gibraltrar, in search of Bald and Bankrupt..Gibraltar is a British overseas territory in the Iberian Peninsula that borders Spain. Its geopolitical past and present and position as one of the world's richest places is what makes it unique place worth visiting. The people don't identify as British nor Spanish, they identify as Gibraltarian.. So that begs the question.. How similar to Great Britian is it? Brexit has also been an ongoing issue the last few years. Sir George Rooke captured Gibraltar for the British during the War of the Spanish Succession, and Spain formally ceded it to Britain in 1713 with the signing of the Treaty of Ultrecht. Gibraltar is a tiny British territory located on the southern tip of Spain just 14 km north of Morocco.
It is dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar and is commonly known as, The Rock.

We took a drive down from Marbella Spain to see this iconic landmark and to enjoy a little slice of Britain in the far south of Europe. We started with a Gibraltar Street walk from Spain to cross the border into the British territory of Gibraltar.

Our first stop was the top of the rock observation deck that offered stunning panoramic views of Gibraltar. We not only saw Gibraltar, but we saw across straight of Gibraltar to Morocco in Africa and Spain’s Costa del Sol. It is truly spectacular. But the star attraction is definitely the rock of Gibraltar itself.

One of the star attractions of Gibraltar is the Ape’s Den where you’ll find a group of monkeys who have decided to call this place home at the cable car’s mid-station. But the Gibraltar monkeys are everywhere. Legend has it that as long as the macaques inhabit Gibraltar, the British will remain.

The monkeys were so important to the British, that they were placed under the armies protection and Winston Churchill even ordered more monkeys from Morocco when their numbers were on the decline. They can be very feisty though so make sure to keep your distance.

The Skywalk is a glass walking dangling 340 meters above sea level. It offers panoramic views of three countries and two continents and is said to be able to withstand the weight of 5 asian elephants.

It’s an amazing hike through the rock of Gibraltar and we followed the rocky trails from one attraction to another. Gibraltar was heavily fortified and there are plenty of ruins, guard stations and old lookouts to explore.

If you are visiting southern Europe, make sure to put the Rock of Gibraltar on your travel itinerary

GIBRALTAR | The Best Day Trip From Malaga, Spain

Gibraltar is a British territory, a 2 hour drive from Malaga, Spain. Gibraltar is famous for its military forts hidden within the Rock of Gibraltar, a nearly 1,400 ft tall limestone ridge jutting up from the Mediterranean sea. After going through border control and getting our passports stamped, we ate a full english breakfast and hiked to the top of The Rock. Although we took the road up to the top, we hiked down the Mediterranean steps with some of the sketchiest stairs we have ever seen.

GIBRALTAR, ENGLAND THE ROCK I 4K CITY AERIAL VIEWS I 2022

GIBRALTAR, ENGLAND THE ROCK I 4K CITY AERIAL VIEWS I 2022

Gibraltar, is a British Overseas Territory and city located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula.
It has an area of 6.7 km2 (2.6 sq mi) and is bordered to the north by Spain. The landscape is dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar, at the foot of which is a densely populated town area, home to over 32,000 people, primarily Gibraltarians.

In 1704, Anglo-Dutch forces captured Gibraltar from Spain during the War of the Spanish Succession. The territory was ceded to Great Britain in perpetuity under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. It became an important base for the Royal Navy, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars and World War II, as it controlled the narrow entrance and exit to the Mediterranean Sea, the Strait of Gibraltar, which is only 14.3 km (8.9 mi) wide.
This choke point remains strategically important, with half the world's seaborne trade passing through it.
Gibraltar's economy is based largely on tourism, online gambling, financial services, and bunkering.

Rock of Gibraltar by drone | GIBRALTAR ????????

Rock of Gibraltar

The Rock of Gibraltar (from the Moorish Gibraltar name Jabel-al-Tariq) is a monolithic limestone promontory located in the British territory of Gibraltar, near the southwestern tip of Europe on the Iberian Peninsula. It is 426 m high. Most of the Rock's upper area is covered by a nature reserve, which is home to around 300 Barbary macaques. These macaques, as well as a labyrinthine network of tunnels, attract many tourists each year.

The Rock of Gibraltar, one of the two traditional Pillars of Hercules, was known to the Romans as Mons Calpe, the other pillar being Mons Abila, either Monte Hacho or Jebel Musa on the African side of the Strait. According to ancient myths fostered by the Greeks and the Phoenicians, and later perpetuated by the Romans, the two points marked the limit to the known world; although the Phoenicians had actually sailed beyond this point into the Atlantic, both northward and southward.

Most of the Rock of Gibraltar is occupied by the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, where, among others, about 250 macaque monkeys (one species of macaque, called Barbary Ape in English), which are the only free-living monkeys in Europe. Legend has it that if the monkeys disappear from Gibraltar, Britain will lose this enclave (a similar legend applies to the ravens of the Tower of London). The British take this legend - because of the morale of the military and local residents - extremely seriously, so much so that since 1915, through the two world wars, monkeys were under the care of the British military. Since 1991, the civilian authorities of Gibraltar have taken care of them, using labeling, systematic, controlled feeding and threatening high fines (up to £ 500) for feeding them by the numerous tourists visiting the reserve.

Climbing the Rock of Gibraltar

Our first adventure in van life was climbing the #RockofGibraltar!!

Lou and I have been looking at the Rock of #Gibraltar for over 5 months while working on Ody in the small town of Casares in southern Spain. Just last week we finally had the opportunity to go there in person, climb to the top, meet all the #monkeys, and enjoy the hard work we put in to make our van life a dream a reality. I can't put into words what it felt like to go on our first hike from the van. One of our biggest goals in the van was to spend more time in nature, and this hike made me feel like we had finally made that happen : )

Love from Faro,
Dana (& Lou)

The Rock Hotel - Gibraltar Spain Holiday - September Weather and Dolphin Trip

Love this hotel, so just wanted to make a video so you can see how nice it is. The staff are very friendly, the rooms luxurious and the food was delicious!

There is plenty to do and see, especially if you are interested in history.
We visited the World War Tunnels and did a car tour to see the monkeys. You can also take a cable car up to the top of the mountain.
I would also really recommend doing the dolphin safari with (they're the blue boat)
It was amazing and we saw loads of dolphins!

This was in the beginning of september and the temperature was around 25 degrees celcius every day.

Please like this video if you found it useful.
