French Guiana Drone Flight: Overseas France consists of all the French-administered territories outside the European continent, mostly relics of the French colonial empire. These territories have varying legal status and different levels of autonomy, although all have representation in both Frances National Assembly and Senate, which together make up the French Parliament. Their citizens have French nationality and vote for the president of France. They have the right to vote in elections to the European Parliament. Overseas France includes island territories in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, French Guiana on the South American continent, and several periantarctic islands as well as a claim in Antarctica. Almost all inhabited French administrative divisions outside Europe are classified as either overseas regions or overseas collectivities; these statuses are very different from one another from a legal and administrative standpoint. Iles du Salut | Salvation Islands in French Guiana
Our weekend trip to the Salvation Islands (Îles du Salut) in March 2021.
They were a part of a penal colony back in the day and the ruins of the prison, SHUs and administrative buildings are still there.
In this short movie, however, I wanted to show the nature and the surroundings rather than the shadows of the past.

Fort-de-France Drone Flight: Fort-de-France is the capital of the Caribbean island of Martinique, a French overseas territory. Its known for colonial architecture, ornate iron balconies, tropical flowers and beaches. La Savane park has a statue of Napoleon Is wife Joséphine, a native of the island. Exhibits at the Martinique Museum of Archaeology and Prehistory focus on the islands history, especially the pre-Columbian period. Nearby is the belle époque Schoelcher Library. A statue of its namesake, abolitionist Victor Schoelcher, fronts the neoclassical Palais de Justice, now the Espace Camille Darsières cultural center. The 17th-century Fort Saint Louis overlooks the city from a rocky outcrop. St. Louis Cathedral was designed by Gustave Eiffel. In a colonial building, the Musee dHistoire et dEthnographie (Museum of History and Ethnography) has period furnishings, jewelry and historical documents. Visiting Papillon’s Devil’s island - French Guiana 2018
Papillon’s world famous Devil’s island at ”Îles du Salut” - in French Guiana (South America). Known in English as the Salvation Islands, these little Islands were anything but ”salvation” for the prisoners sent here from the French mainland by Emperor Napoleon III and the subsequent French governments. This was the French smaller version of other more famous death camps. From 1852 to 1947, some 80,000 prisoners died from disease, inhumane conditions and the guillotine on these sad isles. So much for égalité, liberté and fraternité.
The three tiny former prison islands consist of Île du Diable, Île Royale and Île St Joseph and thanks to shark infested waters they were considered escape proof and extra appropriate for political prisoners: including the French/Jewish Alfred Dreyfus - wrongly convicted of treason in 1894.
The most famous prisoner though was Henry Charrière, who became known for his epic tale of nine remarkable escapes from French Guiana’s infamous prison camps. Nicknamed Papillon (Butterfly) for a tattoo on his chest, Charrière claims that after being wrongly convicted of murder he escaped from Îles du Salut by floating toward the mainland on a sack full of coconuts and cut his way through harsh malarial jungles to flee towards freedom eastward. Papillon is portrayed by Steve McQueen in a 1973 Hollywood version of his life also starring a young Dustin Hoffman in thick glasses
French Guiana - Devils Island
Highlights of our visit to the Iles of Salut or Islands of Savation as they were known by missionaries trying to escape the plague on mainland Guiana. After the Bagne de Cayenne or Penal Colony of Cayenne was built by the French in 1852 the islands collectively became known as Devils Island. The island prision was made famous by the movie Papaillon, starring Steve McQueen, in 1973.

On the way to French Guyana from Brazil we stopped again at these islands. We were here in the 1990's and I was impressed by the unsettling atmosphere, the spooky abandoned prison buildings, the awful solitary confinement cells, the cemetery.
20 years later nothing had changed but to me the atmosphere seemed even thicker than before. I could practically see the ghosts hiding in amongst the trees.
I took this film over a period of about 5 days. We'd had a good voyage from Brazil (2 weeks or so) but I was feeling rough. So weary and exhausted, I was functioning like a zombie, having to force myself to get motivated to do the simplest thing. The Portishead track kept playing in my head. I just wanted to lie down in one of the cells and sleep.....
About a week after that we arrived in St.Laurent du Maroni, French Guyana and I felt even worse so I actually went to a doctor. I had emergency surgery and, upon waking with four holes in my guts, they told me that my appendix had burst about a month before. No one could quite believe how I'd endured the pain, but it wasn't so much pain - it was all like a strange dream, this film brings it all back. The pain after surgery was much worse. I remained three weeks in the hospital recovering from peritonitis. Now, a year later, I think I've recovered and have regained my strength.

The Salvation's Islands (French: Îles du Salut, so called because the missionaries went there to escape plague on the mainland) are a group of small islands of volcanic origin about 11 kilometres off the coast of French Guyana in the Atlantic Ocean.
The islands were part of a notorious penal colony from 1852 onwards for the worst criminals of France.
Île Saint-Joseph was for punishment of the worst of those criminals and had a reputation for harshness and brutality. The prisoners were kept in solitary confinement in silence and, for extra punishment, in darkness.
The islands were featured in the novel Papillon, by Henri Charrière. He was imprisoned there for 9 years. Joseph Conrad's short story An Anarchist (1906) is largely set in Salvation's Islands.

French Guiana Overland: a photo montage set to music
French Guiana, along with Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Guyana, Suriname, Paraguay, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador was one of the places I travelled across in 2011 as part of my goal to cross every nation in South America by land. The whole journey took six weeks. Now, as I finish the first month of the Covid-19 lockdown, I find myself going back and organizing montages based on my experiences. Although I would prefer to be outdoors filming videos about daily life in Paris, museum visits, gallery tours, and international travel, the montage compilations are teaching me about editing and sound effects.
These pictures are not very high quality. This was my first experience with a digital camera, but bad photos can convey a narrative and serve as guidelines on what not to do next time.
My ultimate goal is to build the best quality channel possible, one that gives people an insight into other parts of the world and delves into several subjects in depth. I hope that you will join me for this exciting venture.
