Real Talk:
Despite our attempt at keeping our documentaries as authentic as possible, you are still watching a highlight reel. When editing, we naturally tend to choose the most exciting video clips. What you don’t see are the moments spent driving through less spectacular landscapes or some of the challenges we faced. Please always keep that in mind when watching!

Grindadráp
An extremely controversial topic that is closely tied to the Faroe Islands is the traditional Grindadráp. In a nutshell, it is a mass killing of pilot whales, a species of dolphins. Every year, around 700 dolphins are killed in these hunts. As everything happens out in the open, with the shore waters literally turning red, these killings get a lot of international (media) attention.

Frankly, it is extremely tough to separate ‚right‘ from ‚wrong‘ here. In the past, this subsistence hunting technique was vital for the survival of the local inhabitants with the meat being equally distributed among all islanders. As such, the Grindadráp always had an important social aspect, as the local community worked jointly together. There is no doubt that the centuries of hardship, living on a remote, wind-tossed island group, have ingrained the advantages of this hunting technique into the collective mind of the Faroese.

From an outside perspective, killing pilot whales in such numbers seems utterly pointless and cruel, especially as, today, there are sufficient alternative food sources. At the same time, one could ask if there is a moral difference between killing pilot whales, a species of least concern, compared to seals, sharks, moose or deer? Or compared to cows, pigs or chickens held in factory farming, which are killed in the millions, away from the public eye.

No person regularly eating meat is in any position to morally judge the actions of the Faroese.

However, one thing that personally bothers us, is that these killings are defended by calling it a ‚tradition‘. In our opinion, traditions are nothing intrinsically positive. Slavery was once a tradition. Burning widows on a pyre was once a tradition. And female genital mutilation is still a horrible tradition today. Therefore, continuing these mass killings simply because they are a ‚tradition‘ is not a good enough reason. Some traditions are not worth keeping.

Road trip & Things to do in the Faroe Islands

I'm taking you on a road trip and show you the best things to do in the Faroe Islands (a true outdoor paradise) in partnership with Visit Faroe Islands.

I spent exactly one week on the Faroe Islands working together with the local tourism board to show you an interesting mix of the best things to do in the faroe islands from outdoor adventures, iconic panoramas and food experiences to one of the largest festivals in the country named „G! Festival“.

Beside checking out the local attractions I got the chance to truly live like a local - I stayed with a local family for a few days, got invited by farmers for dinner and went hiking with one of the most famous outdoor adventurers.

Together with travel blogger Amanda Williams I rented a car and went on a road trip to the most popular instagram hot spots, got to do sea kayaking and said hi to Puffins on Mykines island. Visiting the annual G! festival was the perfect finish to a memorable trip…topping it off with a helicopter flight. What a ride!

Discover Faroe Islands: The Country With the Most Disgusting Food Habits? 59 Fascinating Facts

Discover The Faroe Islands: a Paradise with world's most disgusting food habits?

The Faroe Islands is one of the most breathtaking destinations in the world. Its stunning natural beauty, rugged landscapes, and pristine coastline make it a must-see location for any traveler. If you've been fortunate enough to visit this incredible archipelago, then you know firsthand just how awe-inspiring it can be. The islands are home to many stunning waterfalls, including the Múlafossur waterfall on the island of Vágar. This iconic waterfall drops from a height of 60 meters (197 feet) into the ocean below and is a popular tourist attraction on the islands.

The Faroe Islands have a unique charm that captures the hearts of all who visit, and it's no wonder why. However, what truly sets the Faroe Islands apart from other tourist destinations is its cuisine. Have you ever tried fermented fish? How about a dish made from a sheep's head? These are just a couple of the traditional foods you can expect to find on the Faroe Islands. But why do the locals eat such unusual dishes?

In this video, we'll dive into the history of the Faroe Islands and you will learn fascinating things about the island including their language, history, nature, culture, traditions, economy and much more!

How Good is Public Transport in The Faroe Islands? I'll try as many modes as I can in a Single Day.

I arrived in The Faroe Islands with no intention of hiring a car or taking an official tour, but would this really be possible? Join me in Tórshavn as I set out on a day of adventure. The challenge will be to try as many different modes of transport as I can so if you fancy seeing how I got on and what sights I saw along the way, let's get on the road!

Filmed in The Faroe Islands on Tuesday 13th June 2023.

I don’t pretend to be a travel expert, but I love what I do and would be honoured if you came along with me. My channel focusses on the wide-eyed wonder and excitement of finding somewhere new, and my genuine reaction to it. You might not get a history lesson in my videos, but who knows, you might pick up some useful travel tips along the way, add a few destinations to your bucket list and hopefully be entertained by what you see. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me :)

I do ALL of this myself. Planning, filming, editing, promoting, all with a weekly upload schedule, so please understand not every video will be an epic adventure. But my pledge is to always do my best in any situation.

FAQs:
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESTINATION?
This can be difficult to pinpoint as I get most pleasure from visiting new places (and often that will be somewhere I've never even heard of). But to try and categorise it, I'd say take me to a small, cold island somewhere the beer is not too expensive and I'll be happy. Any suggestions?
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman.
WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature as often as possible, but I'm afraid she has a proper job so it can take weeks for our schedules to match up.
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links below for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for YouTube Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

The Faroe Islands to be Closed for Maintenance, Open for Voluntourism in 2022

How can popular tourist sites remain unspoiled by tourism?
We found a solution and you can become part of it!

After two successful events in 2019 and 2021, we once again call on voluntourists worldwide to sign up for our ‘Closed for Maintenance, Open for Voluntourism’ initiative to help us preserve our beautiful islands, for the good of both future visitors and locals.

From 4 to 6 May 2022 100 participants will work alongside Faroe Islanders working on old village paths, creating safer routes and re-building cairns in return for free accommodation, food and transport on the islands over a three-night period. All projects will be identified by a mix of local municipalities, tourism centres and local villagers.

You can be part of this and sign up today on our website.

Previous ´Closed for Maintenance, Open for Voluntourism´ projects have seen extraordinarily high numbers of volunteers offering to help with thousands of applications from people worldwide.

The total of 200 voluntourists who have taken part in the last two projects have represented more than 25 different nations, all working together with the local Faroese, and making a tangible, positive difference to the environment.

We hope that our annual project will also inspire other countries to set up their own Maintenance Crews, encouraging visitors to help to redress the impact of tourism worldwide.

Registration to become part of the 2022 Maintenance Crew will open today, Tuesday 14 December at 11.00 hrs (UK time) and will remain open for 24 hours; 100 people will be chosen randomly to take part, and will be notified by email in January.

Here is the link to register

Sorvagsvatn Lake ! The Lake above the Ocean in Faroe islands ! Sorvagsvatn Lake Travel Video

Welcome to my video about the incredible lake above the ocean phenomenon in the Faroe Islands!

Located on the island of Vágar, Sørvágsvatn is a breathtakingly beautiful lake that appears to be floating above the ocean when viewed from certain angles. The illusion is created by the steep cliffs surrounding the lake, which make it seem like it's directly above the water.

In reality, the lake sits about 30 meters above the ocean and is one of the largest freshwater bodies in the Faroe Islands. The view from the cliffs overlooking the lake and the ocean is simply stunning, and it's no wonder why this has become a popular tourist attraction in the region.

In this video, I'll take you on a virtual tour of Sørvágsvatn and share some interesting facts about the geology and history of the area. Whether you're planning a trip to the Faroe Islands or simply want to experience this wonder from the comfort of your home, you won't want to miss this video.

So sit back, relax, and let's explore the lake above the ocean in the Faroe Islands together
