Tortola's largest island is a 12 by a 3-mile paradise of white sand, lush green mountains, ruins, and rum distilleries. Tortola is also home to the capital, Road Town. Dramatic Virgin Gorda beckons you into underwater caverns. On mellow Jost Van Dyke, where swim-up bars serve delectable rum cocktails, island time prevails. Visitors are drawn to the lovely coral island of Anegada by its pristine beaches. Where is it?
If you are wondering, where on earth is the British Virgin Islands?
East of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean is the British Virgin Islands (BVI), a British overseas territory. The Virgin Islands archipelago includes the islands. Along with more than 50 other smaller islands and cays, the British Virgin Islands comprise the four main islands of Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke. The number of inhabited islands is around 15. Tortola, the largest island, measures approximately 12 miles (19 km) in length and 3 miles (5 km) in width. About 22,000 people are living on the islands as a whole. The capital of Tortola is in Road Town.

Exploring Tortola, British Virgin Islands | Top 3 Places to Visit
Come along with us as we spend the day exploring our 3 favorite places on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. Tortola, the entrance to the British Virgin Islands, has gorgeous white-sand beaches, incredible restaurants along the water, and some of the best beach bars in the Caribbean.
The three places we visited were:
- Long Bay
- Smuggler's Cove
- Cane Garden
We had dinner in Road Town at a fantastic Italian restaurant, Capriccio di Mare!

Eye-catching and utterly unique, there is nothing like it in this part of the world. The area is famous for its granite boulders that scatter pristine white sand beaches. These rocks were formed by volcanic uplifts tens of millions of years ago. Today, they capture the imagination of millions!

Who Is RumShopRyan:
Howdy! I’m Ryan and I hail from the land-locked, can’t get any further from the ocean, state of Kansas. I moved to laid back southwest Florida in 2001. I didn’t know a single person and didn’t have a job. Risky I know, but the ocean was calling and I had to answer.
I’m a huge fan of Kansas City sports, so you’ll probably see a lot of Jayhawks, Chiefs and Royals attire in my photos. Kansas City is a great town and I’m glad I’m from there, but the coastal life was calling. It’s kind of like Kenny Chesney’s “island boy” song. Check out the lyrics and you’ll see what I mean.
I write because I’m passionate about the Caribbean and the island lifestyle, and it’s my way to share it with you. If it has anything to do with the Caribbean, rum drinks, beach style music, or Caribbean culture, you’ll be able to find it on this site.
When in the Caribbean you’ll find a camera around my neck and note pad in my pocket. This is how I document the experiences in unique and interesting ways and bring it back to you, the Castaways.
Who is Castaway Crystal:
I was raised in Southwest Florida so it’s no surprise that I have a love for beaches, water and nature. As a child, most weekends were spent fishing in the warm gulf waters on the family boat. As an adult, most weekends are spent soaking up the sun on Ft. Myers Beach. Even though I have always loved the coastal life, I don’t think I fully appreciated it until I moved to Nashville, TN. I’m all about experiencing new things, and as a Licensed Massage Therapist I thought it would be amazing to massage some of Nashville’s biggest stars (a girl can dream right?). But I missed the sun and sand too much—and let’s not forget the rum runners! After a year I couldn’t take it anymore, this sun bunny moved back to her coast of somewhere beautiful.
I’ve always been passionate about photography and writing but my passions never really had a purpose until I met Ryan. I couldn’t be happier being Ryan’s first mate and sharing my photos and stories with you. May they inspire you to go after your tropical dreams and wishes. Make a plan…Set a date…Just go!

The Baths is unlike any other beach in the Caribbean.
It features white sandy beaches framed by gigantic granite boulders formed as a result of volcanoes. Bring along your water shoes, a snorkel and a waterproof camera and explore the series of caves and grottos created by these unusual boulders.

British Virgin Islands - The Baths, Exploring Virgin Gorda
First stop was the Devil's Bay with it's crystal clear water and then on to the caves of The Baths. Worth the slight boulder climbing to get to the other side.
BVI - Virgin Gorda Exploring the Island
After the Baths we headed to Spring Bay, Savannah Bay and all the way around the island. A fun find was Hog Heaven, a bar that overlooks Bitter End with amazing views. It was an incredibly beautiful drive.

As we begin our sailing cruise, we first visit The Baths, a pile of huge granite boulders that vary in size and shape. After exploring here, we move on to Devil's Bay, and then to Spanish Town, the main settlement on Virgin Gorda. From the marina here, we take a tour of the island. Once finished, we sail to Savannah Bay and North Sound.

99 Steps Hike - Virgin Gorda, BVI
There's a new hike on Virgin Gorda!! Called 99 Steps, this 45 minute out and back trail starts at Long Bay and goes all the way out to Mountain Point. An easy to moderate hike, this is perfect for all age levels, but I do recommend wearing sunscreen and bringing water!!
To find the hike head down to Long Bay Beach (located between Hog Heaven and SugarCane restaurants on the Nail Bay road) park in the car park, head to the beach and then walk as far as you can to the right at which point you will find the trail head.
