You'll NEVER Guess What I Found In Ethiopia! (#172) ???????? Happy New Year! ????????

Get 25% off Blinkist Annual premium! Start your 7-day free trial by clicking the link here:

Happy New Year መልካም አዲስ ዓመት! Ethiopia isn't quite on the same calendar as everyone else, and they do things their own way. They've got their own coffee -- hell, they invented it. They've got their own, ahem, stimulants ????. They've even got their own questionable local liquor made out of honey.

Perhaps as a result, you can find some pretty unique people from around the world there. They even have a community of Rastafarians living there who came to be closer to Hailie Selassie, the former Emperor, who they thought was God. And it was there that I found someone REALLY unexpected.

Join us on this strange but somehow hilarious trip from Addis Ababa to Shashamene and Wondo Genet, from the capital to the lands of the Oromos.

Visiting This Country Is Like Going Back In Time! ???????? ERITREA ???????? (#175)

This place isn't Italy. It isn't Cuba, and it's not the Middle East either. This is Eritrea, and there's nowhere else like it on earth. Due to a history of colonization by Italy and near-constant war with it's neighbor Ethiopia, this country has a very distinctive look--and it feels like it hasn't changed in 50 years.

After visiting the capital city of Asmara, it was time to tour the entire country. We would visit lands that very few foreigners have seen--at least in the last 30 years. Ruins and remains from the Ottomans, Egyptians, Italians and Ethiopians lay waiting to be explored, as if they were destroyed just yesterday. This was one of the most interesting trips I had ever taken.

In 2018, I had the pleasure of visiting 21 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. I absolutely love this continent. It offers incredible nature, culture, and experiences that you cannot find anywhere else.

In a sense, I feel like traveling to Africa is the only real traveling that I've ever done.

But I have noticed a lot of scamming and bribery happening to me in African countries lately, and that's why I made this video.

I know this post will get a lot of hate mail, and that's okay. I want to hear your opinions, thoughts, and suggestions on this subject.

I could lie to you guys and say that Africa is 100% safe as a non-black person, but that's just not the case. Perhaps it would be safer if I didn't travel solo, but I always have.

The point of this video is that if you physically stand out in any place, you will be treated differently. And I wish someday, in this amazing world of ours, that this will not be the case.

Addis Ababa:
Addis Ababa sometimes spelled Addis Abeba (the spelling used by the official Ethiopian Mapping Authority), is the capital city of Ethiopia. Founded in 1886, it is the largest city in Ethiopia, with a population of 3,384,569 according to the 2007 population census with annual growth rate of 3.8%. This number has been increased from the originally published 2,738,248 figure and appears to be still largely underestimated. As a chartered city (ras gez astedader), Addis Ababa has the status of both a city and a state. It is where the African Union and its predecessor the OAU are based. It also hosts the headquarters of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and numerous other continental and international organizations. Addis Ababa is therefore often referred to as the political capital of Africa due to its historical, diplomatic and political significance for the continent.
The city is populated by people from different regions of Ethiopia – the country has as many as 80 nationalities speaking 80 languages and belonging to a wide variety of religious communities. It is home to Addis Ababa University. The Federation of African Societies of Chemistry (FASC) and Horn of Africa Press Institute (HAPI) are also headquartered in Addis Ababa.
Overview:Addis Ababa lies at an altitude of 7,546 feet (2,300 metres) and is a grassland biome, located at 9°1′48″N 38°44′24″ECoordinates: 9°1′48″N 38°44′24″E. The city lies at the foot of Mount Entoto and forms part of the watershed for the Awash. From its lowest point, around Bole International Airport, at 2,326 metres (7,631 ft) above sea level in the southern periphery, the city rises to over 3,000 metres (9,800 ft) in the Entoto Mountains to the north.
Based on the 2007 census conducted by the Ethiopian national statistics authorities the population of Addis Ababa is 3,384,569 million; all of the population are urban inhabitants. For the capital city 662,728 households were counted living in 628,984 housing units, which results in an average of 5.3 persons to a household. Although all Ethiopian ethnic groups are represented in Addis Ababa due to its position as capital of the country, the largest groups include the Amhara (47.04%), Oromo (19.51%), Gurage (16.34%), Tigray (6.18%), Silt'e (2.94%), and Gamo (1.68%). Languages spoken include Amharic (71.0%), Oromiffa (10.7%), Gurage (8.37%), Tigrinya (3.60%), Silt'e (1.82%) and Gamo (1.03%). The religion with the most believers in Addis Ababa is Ethiopian Orthodox with 74.7% of the population, while 16.2% are Muslim, 7.77% Protestant, and 0.48% Catholic.
In the previous census, conducted in 1994, the city's population was reported to be 2,112,737, of whom 1,023,452 were men and 1,089,285 were women. At that time not all of the population were urban inhabitants; only 2,084,588 or 98.7% were. For the entire administrative council there were 404,783 households in 376,568 housing units with an average of 5.2 persons per household. The major ethnic groups included the Amhara (48.3%), Oromo (19.2%), Gurage (13.5%; 2.3% Sebat Bet, and 0.8% Sodo), Tigray 7.64%, Silt'e 3.98%, and foreigners from Eritrea 1.33%. Languages spoken included Amharic (72.6%), Oromiffa (10.0%), Gurage (6.54%), Tigrinya (5.41%), and Silt'e 2.29%. In 1994 the predominant religion was also Ethiopian Orthodox with 82.0% of the population, while 12.7% were Muslim, 3.87% Protestant, and 0.78% Catholic.
According to the 2007 national census, 98.64% of the housing units of Addis Ababa had access to safe drinking water, while 14.9% had flush toilets, 70.7% pit toilets (both ventilated and unventilated), and 14.3% had no toilet facilities. Values for other reported common indicators of the standard of living for Addis Ababa as of 2005 include the following: 0.1% of the inhabitants fall into the lowest wealth quintile; adult literacy for men is 93.6% and for women 79.95%, the highest in the nation for both sexes; and the civic infant mortality rate is 45 infant deaths per 1,000 live births, which is less than the nationwide average of 77; at least half of these deaths occurred in the infants’ first month of life.Wikipedia

Ethiopia Travel Guide + Vlog | Addis Ababa and Awassa

What are the best things to do in Ethiopia? This travel guide slash vlog will show you everything I did during my two weeks there! From Addis Ababa to Awassa, I'll take you to two beautiful regions of the country and share some of my best travel tips.

I visited Ethiopia for work, so didn't get to do many typical touristy things like the churches in Lalibela, Danakil Depression or hiking the Simien Mountains. But my experiences were perhaps a little more local and authentic than your average guided tour, so I hope you'll take this video for what it is.

Have you ever been to Ethiopia? Did you just pass through the capital of Addis Ababa, or did you have time to go sightseeing? Let me know in a comment below, I'm so curious!

Inside Africa's North Korea: How It Really Is ???????? (#174)

You may not have heard of this country, but perhaps you’ve seen it by another name: “the North Korea of Africa”. But that doesn’t quite tell the full story. There’s nowhere like Eritrea in Africa, or in the world for that matter. It’s a place where everyone must serve in the military, a place where most people have never used the internet, and a place where people have to stay in their lane, or else. But it’s also a country of extremely friendly and welcoming people. It’s very safe, you can walk any street in the country without a care in the world. And it’s extremely beautiful—while also remaining relatively undiscovered by the outside world.

This was one of the trips I was most excited for. It took almost 2 months to secure the visa, but once I got it, I was on my way to Asmara, the capital. This is the record of my journey.

Feeding Wild Hyenas in Ethiopia (Don't Do This At Home)

Charge Everything, Everywhere, Faster all at once with Anker Prime's latest products:

Welcome to ETHIOPIA - my favorite country in Africa! It's so nice to be here with Deanna, our 76th country together! We have a very special story to tell you from the historic city of Harar, near the border with Somalia. There is a man named Abbas, and along with his father Yusuf, are the only people in the world who live with (and feed) wild hyenas. Every single night, they spend about $40 USD collecting raw camel and cow meat from local butchers and use it to feed their wild hyenas. They are so close with their hyenas that they have named all of them, and the bond is something I've never seen before.

This is truly a wild story from a corner of Ethiopia that you may have never heard of before, and I'm really grateful to be able to share it with you today. I'd love to hear from you in the comments below - what do you think of the hyena man? Would you ever come here? Or feed them with your mouth, if given the chance?

Harar (Ethiopia) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Harar in Ethiopia.
In the east of Ethiopia is the historic city of Harar which, after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem, is regarded by Muslims to be the fourth holiest city in the world. The whole of the old town is surrounded by a wall, with five of the original gates that are kept shut from dusk to dawn. In the highlands of Black Africa, Harar was one of the most important trading centres of the Islamic faith, a Muslim stronghold in Christian Ethiopia. The magic of the Orient still exists in this place and its many whitewashed buildings gave it the alternative name of The White City. Today there is no hint of the former religious conflict of bygone days and instead the peaceful coexistence of religions is exemplary. Indeed, UNESCO recognized it for peace, tolerance and solidarity. Framed by white buildings and a white mosque, the muslim market is one of two small markets within the walls of the old town in which colourfully dressed women sell fruit, baskets and other goods, both day and night. Harar is a remarkable city with all of the atmosphere of the One Hundred And One Nights!

Ethiopia in the eyes of a foreigner.

Addis Ababa (sometimes spelled Addis Abeba, the spelling used by the official Ethiopian Mapping Authority) is the capital city of Ethiopia. Students and foreigners tour the Natural History Museum of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

A tour of the Natural History Museum in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the first morning of Professor Nancy Pearlman touring that nation.

Many students crowding the museum. A field trip. An assignment. And see the students attempting to take notes in the rush and chaos of their visit.

Very encouraging. They are the future of Ethiopia. Stuffed leopards and cycloramas of birds may not be math and electronics and medicine -- yet young students who devote their intelligence and discipline to every assignment demonstrate their intent to excel in all their studies.

Ethiopia, the most facinating country in the continent of africa (by the world travel vignettes)
