Demonstration of NAMA - a native language of Namibia

Lockrentia Ikhabes & Josephine Bools describe their country (Namibia) in their native language (Nama) to Malcolm Wilson, friend, naturalist and guide, during our 2 week trip to Namibia in May 2014. Eddie Auseb at Spitzkoppe gives a demonstration.

Namibia is... GERMAN?!

Yesterday, I arrived in Namibia (my 143rd country!) to start a 10 day tour with G Adventures! But as I've been wandering around the unique capital city of Windhoek, I couldn't help but notice how GERMAN everything feels. Seriously, the culture is bizarre here in Namibia!

As I investigated further, I discovered that Namibia was a German colony (from 1884 - 1915), and despite 103 years of separation since the Germans left, their influence is still deeply rooted in Namibian society today.

I became so fascinated by this German-Namibian culture, because the vast majority of the world that I've seen has been conquered by either the British, French, Spanish, Portuguese or Dutch... Not the Germans.

Here is a fun video I put together today all about my observations on German-influenced Namibia.

Just out of curiosity -- Is this all news to you? Or did you know that Namibia is German-influenced?

Namibia Travel Tips - Going Green

Have you ever wondered how you could be a sustainable traveller? We may just have your answer. Check this out.

Let’s talk about transparency.
We have talked about being a Sustainable Traveler – so how do you choose your accommodation, transport, etc. with a company that is actually green, versus merely greenwashing?

When planning your vacation, how will you be able to tell if a tourism company is truly green? In other words, how do you recognize when a company that offers “Green Travel” experiences is, in fact, just greenwashing?

The answer to this is Transparency. A truly responsible tourism company will put the needs of the local people and environment before the needs of travelers, always striving to make a positive impact. Green companies make this kind of information available.

Travels coming up? These are the questions that need asking:
What are some of your company’s environmentally friendly practices?
Can you give me an example of how your practices help protect and support wildlife or cultural heritage?
Do you employ locals?
Could we make these questions pop ups instead?

At Gondwana Collection, Sustainability as a philosophy Book with accommodations who have sustainability as a core operational component. With a focus on Conservation and Social Commitment. We aim to combine our hospitality business with nature conservation and social commitment in a sustainable manner.

How do they do this?
Through the creation of Nature Parks that span more than 130 000 km.
Through responsible waste management
Water recycling plants on all the lodges
Environmentally conscious activities
Planting trees
Making use of solar energy
Working with local communities and charities

Coming to Namibia? Various companies in the country have gone green.

An example? Gondwana Collection Namibia.

Eco-Travel is a great way to see the world and give back while you do so.

Just remember to ask the right questions.

Welcome to Oymyakon, the COLDEST City in the WORLD!

Oymyakon is situated in Siberia, Russia. The settlement was started in the 1920's by reindeer herders who watered their reindeer in the thermal spring which gives the town its name, Oymyakon Water that doesn't freeze.

Around 500 people are living in Oymyakon but to be honest it's more about surviving than living.
The average temperature in the colder months is -40 degrees Fahrenheit, there are only 3 warmer months, with temperatures averaging 50 degrees Fahrenheit and the record low was recorded in 1923 when temperatures dropped to -96.

The houses don't have plumbing because the water would freeze in the pipes, so toilets are simple pits with a roof and door over them.

The village has its own heating plant that burns coal none stop to heat water, which is then pumped through the village pipework.

When outside, they have to keep their car's engine running, all the time, even when refilling at the gas station, if not, the fuel would freeze in seconds making it impossible to start again.

They have a school, to which the kids have to go every day unless temperatures drop below -58f.

Their diet is mainly meat because the ground is permanently frozen so no vegetables can be grown, this Permafrost also makes gravedigging a lengthy experience. first, they light a bonfire to defrost the ground, then dig down until the hit permafrost again, and then repeat. the process of digging a grave can take days.

There is no cell phone coverage, but that's mainly because no one has made a cell phone that can work in such a cold climate.

Even though it's the coldest town in the world and probably the hardest to live in, it is possibly the most beautiful landscape on the planet!

Namibia: Introduction

This video is the introduction to a six part 6 video log of Dawn's Explore holiday to Namibia in November 2018. The safari begins in Windhoek and goes south to the Namib deserts, where we explore the giant sand dunes at Sossusvlei, then travel on to Swakopmund via Walvis bay. At Swakopmund, we took a trip to explore desert wildlife. Next we went to the Cape Cross seal colony on route to the ancient rock art at Brandberg. We visited a Himba village before spending two days on game trips in the Etosha National Park. The final part of the safari went from Etosha to Windhoek via Waterberg.

1994: Namibian Broadcasting Corporation at its best!

A great anchorwoman for a great cultural show

First sight of Deadvlei, Namibia

I couldn't hide the emotion of arriving at Deadvlei. I drove a few days from Windhoek, Namibias capital to get here. Gravel road, hot desert, I saw a few flat tires on the way. Almost no cars on the road. Totally worth it. This location was used in movies like The Cell starring Jennifer Lopez and Steel Dawn. These trees are believed to have died 600 - 700 years ago. So amazing.
