HOLA FROM PARAGUAY --Did you know their first language is NOT Spanish here? It's called Guaraní!
If you are like me 2 days ago, then you know nothing about Paraguay -- so my goal in this video is to introduce and open you mind to this hidden subtropical nation (and culture) in 3 minutes!!
If I am being 100% honest with you, I had very low expectations going into this trip... Most people I know who have been to Paraguay, told me it's boring and not worth my time to visit. Well, I was proven wrong! I love going to places that most people don't visit. It excites me more than anything else.
I was lucky enough to meet up with 2 friends who reached out on Instagram, Niko and his uncle Hernan, who picked me up from the airport and drove me all around Asunción and the countryside for 2 days. We ate amazing food, walked around the city, went to some markets and more -- and it was a lot of fun! I learned a lot about the most homogeneous culture in South America.

Paraguay is a country which many travelers skip because of the lack of big sights. Exactly this made me curious and so I went to checkout if it is really that boring and got to experience so many cool things: from the old town in Asuncion, a football match in the national stadium and the beach in Encarnacion over to the Jesuit Ruins of Trinidad I could explore this country in a really relaxed way and totally off the beaten tourist routes.
The tranquility and the lovely people of Paraguay alone are a great reason to check it out - another is the Terere, a cold version of the Maté which is the national drink here. The lack of tourism creates avery own charm traveling through Paraguay and turns it into a very special experience in Latin America!

The Paraguay River: The Majestic Horned River
The Paraguay River (Spanish: Río Paraguay, port. Rio Paraguai, Guaraní: Ysyry Paraguái) is the fifth largest river in South America, the main tributary of the Parana. It flows through the territories of Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and Argentina.
Its total length is about 2621 km (537 km on the territory of Paraguay and 1309 km on the territory of Brazil), the basin area is more than 365 thousand km², the average water flow is 4316 thousand m³/sec. It is navigable on the extent of 2210 km. It has an average water temperature of 25-26°C upstream and 22-23°C downstream.
It is one of the world's 20 largest rivers. It is Paraguay's main waterway, neatly dividing the country into 2 equal parts: the northwest and southeast.
Some people mistakenly believe that the name of the river comes from the name of the country of Paraguay. In fact, on the contrary - its appearance on the world map the country owes just the river of the same name. Well, the name of the Paraguay River comes from the language of the Guaraní Indians and literally translates as horned river.

Discovering Paraguay: The Heart of South America
Brief information:
Paraguay is a landlocked country in South America, bordered by Argentina to the south and southwest, Brazil to the east and northeast, and Bolivia to the northwest. Paraguay lies on both banks of the Paraguay River, which runs through the center of the country from north to south. Due to its central location in South America, it is sometimes referred to as Corazón de América (Heart of America).
Paraguay is a representative democratic republic, with a multi-party system and separation of powers in three branches. Executive power is exercised solely by the President, who is head of state and head of government. Legislative power is vested in the two chambers of the National Congress. The judiciary is vested on tribunals and Courts of Civil Law and a nine-member Supreme Court of Justice, all of them independent of the executive and the legislature.
Paraguay consists of seventeen departments and one capital district (distrito capital).
It is also divided into 2 regions: The Occidental Region or Chaco (Boquerón, Alto Paraguay and Presidente Hayes), and the Oriental Region (the other departments and the capital district).
The overall climate ranges from subtropical to temperate. Like most lands in the region, Paraguay has only wet and dry periods. Winds play a major role in influencing Paraguay's weather: between October and March, warm winds blow from the Amazon Basin in the North, while the period between May and August brings cold winds from the Andes.
Paraguay's indigenous language and culture, Guaraní, remains highly influential. In each census, residents predominantly identify as mestizo, reflecting years of intermarriage among the different ethnic groups. Guaraní is recognized as an official language alongside Spanish. Both languages are widely spoken in the country, with around 92% of the general population speaking Spanish and 98% speaking Guaraní.
