Byzantine Moldavia Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Byzantine Moldavia.
The world famous Moldau Monasteries, also known as the Bukowina Monasteries, are among the most beautiful examples of Romanian art and have been designated as one of Unesco's architectural monuments. The paintings on the exterior of the Humor Monastery, one of the oldest of the five great Moldau Monasteries, date from the early 16th century. The Voronet Monastery dates back to1488 and was donated by Stefan The Great after a victorious battle against the Turks. First mentioned in 1402, during the 16th century the Moldovita Monastery was destroyed by landslide but rebuilt in 1532. Here, Moldavian architecture combines with elements of Gothic and Renaissance architecture and the majority of Moldau's churches are adorned with colourful frescos. Set in a picturesque location, the Sucevita Monastery is one of the most well preserved churches in the Moldau region. Between 1595 and 1606 the churches' splendid frescos were created under the artistic direction of the artists, Ion and Sofronie. The amazing diversity of the beautifully illustrated individual images of angels and martyrs is considered to be unique in Moldavian architecture. The Arbore Monastery was dedicated to John The Baptist and the portrayal of the Legend Of George on the external facade is particularly noteworthy. Although a number of the wall paintings have not stood the test of time, the Arbore frescos still manage to convey the splendour of Romanian religious art. Massive, well-fortified walls surround the eye-catching Dragomirna Monastery that was built between 1602 and 1609 and its prominent tower is richly decorated with numerous rosettes. Beyond its mighty walls there is a tranquil, idyllic atmosphere. To capture the sacred and historical atmosphere of monastic life, there could be no better destination than the Moldau Monasteries.

Slovakia Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Slovakia.
Slovakia has a long and varied history and contains Europe’s youngest capital city and also its highest mountain range, as well as cultural masterpieces and unspoiled nature. Bratislava is located in the heart of Europe and is the capital of Slovakia. Surrounded by the City Hall and several palaces, it is like being taken back in time into a rich and glorious past. On the Danube’s Slovakian side, and to the east, is the town of Komárno. In the old urban market square a Miniature Europe with forty five buildings has, in recent years, come into existence. Towers, domes, arcades, half-timbered buildings and woodcarvings frame the square at whose centre is the Millennium Fountain. It is a unique mixture of architecture that signifies the common culture of European countries. Seven hundred metres above sea level, herds of sheep graze peacefully on the slopes of the Great Fatra, the location of the almost hidden and forgotten Vlkolĺnec, a unique village in the heart of Slovakia’s Liptov region. Today it is tantamount to being an open-air museum. Further north is Terchová, birthplace of Slovakia’s national hero, Juraj Jánošík. The legendary robber chief has an exhibition dedicated to him in which the living conditions and customs of that time are on display. The High Tatra is the smallest high mountain range in Europe. A magnificent mountain landscape with rocky mountains and many lakes. In 1947, the National Park of the same name was founded. Slovakia is a land of fortresses, castles and cities that date from the Middle Ages and, despite its many mountain regions, a southern-influenced way of life.

Biertan Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Biertan in Romania.
Amid the enchanting wine region of Transylvania is the small village of Biertan formerly known as, Birthaelm, one of the region's oldest settlements. An impressive fortified church rises majestically above the dreamy village, a reminder that Biertan was once of great religious and political importance. The village is still influenced by its old world charm and its fortified church is an atmospheric gem of a bygone age. The militaristic design of the church was a necessary precaution as in former times the region was far from peaceful and idyllic. Both the Tartars and Turks repeatedly invaded Transylvania and thus made it necessary for the village to have a fortified church that could fend off would be attackers.Biertan's church organ is still regarded as a masterpiece and the sound of its one thousand two hundred and ninety pipes is a truly unforgettable and breathtaking experience. As with the larger part of its historical and cultural treasures the fascinating rural character of this intriguing village has been preserved right up to the present day.

Guide to Ukraine & Moldova in 60 Seconds

Watch our 60 second guide to Ukraine and Moldova, taking you off the beaten track to two of Europe's hidden tourist gems.

Ukraine, with its blue lakes and green hills can boast no fewer than seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites including the historic centre of Lviv, the wooden Tserkvas of the Carpathians and the cathedrals and monastic architecture of Kiev. The second largest country on the European continent, it was the birthplace of Russian Orthodoxy and has lain at the heart of the social changes that have beset this region for centuries. With a cultural pedigree that can trace its origins back to Byzantium and the Renaissance, its traditions and food span eons of influences that are just waiting to be discovered.

Sandwiched between Romania and Ukraine, Moldova is blessed with a climate that encourages year round tourism. Not an obvious destination for most tour operators, it is nonetheless blessed with some stunningly unspoiled charms. Its pride lies in its natural landscapes including Pădurea Domnească (the Royal Forest) and The Lower Prut (Prutul de Jos), but within this little slice of heaven you can also find ancient monasteries and historic forts, wineries that can justifiably hold their own with their French counterparts and a generous spirit of hospitality that would be difficult to match anywhere.

Horezu Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Horezu in Romania.
In the midst of the wooded hills of Oltenia's Carpathian countryside is the Horezu Monastery that was donated by Prince Constantin Brancoveanu. The building was constructed in 1690 to defend the western region of the country and the settlement comprises five churches, a sanctuary for the infirm and various monks' cells.Sculptures of stone and floral motifs decorate the external walls of the monastery's main church. Its wall paintings were created by twelve artists under the direction of Masters Constantinos and Ioan between 1692 and 1702 and represent the beginning of the Brancoveanu Style. The library, the Princes' House that today contains the monastery's art collection, the Refectorium with its old paintings, and finally the Treasury that contains icons and precious silver objects that date back to the Brancoveanu period, are each extremely valuable. The Brancoveanu style first gained recognition as early as the 18th century. It soon spread throughout Walachia and Transylvania. Thanks to the refined art of this time, the Horezu Monastery has been designated as a World Heritage.

Travel Guide to Ukraine and Moldova

Quintessentially European, but refreshingly unsullied by the onslaught of mass tourism, Ukraine and Moldova provide us with two of the continent’s surprisingly little-known gems.

Troodos (Cyprus) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about Troodos in Cyprus.
Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean that, due to its proximity to the Holy Land, was one of the first countries in which Christianity was introduced. With their well-preserved churches, the Troodos Mountains are located in the heart of the country. This remote and inaccessible area was soon a refuge for persecuted Christians and a safe place for threatened treasures such as revered religious icons. In Pedoulas, a small village in the Marathasa region, is the Archangel Michael Church that dates back to the fifteenth century. From the outside it looks like a barn but inside are a number of colourful Byzantine wall paintings including Saint Georg Diasoritis on his white horse with flowing cape, decorated shield and spear. Troodos is a low-lying mountain range with many hills and forests and within its centre is the largest and wealthiest monastery on the island, Kykkos, which is located some distance from the nearest village and is situated at an altitude of one thousand one hundred and forty metres above sea level on the mountain of the same name. The entire monastery complex looks like a fortress but beyond its somewhat severe exterior are two inner courtyards with colonnades on each level. Its wealth and fame stems from an icon of Mother Mary that is stored within the monastery’s church. The large village of PalaichorI contains the Metamorfosis Tou Sotirou Church which is situated amid a vineyard and towers over the village, with stunning views. Byzantine art, archaeological monuments and World Heritage churches, all of this is to be found in Troodos, a concentration of priceless treasures of world culture contained within a relatively small area that is probably unique in the world. In Troodos, a tumultuous past and a glorious history accompanied the guardians of both faith and tradition in their quest for peace.

The wrought iron signs on its buildings and its wonderful historic atmosphere are truly captivating. The Tatra Mountains By Train Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination The Tatra Mountains By Train.
The High Tatra is the smallest high mountain range in Europe, a magnificent mountain landscape with majestic rocky mountains and many lakes. The High Tatra National Park was founded in 1947 and is an imposing natural paradise in the heart of Slovakia. On the banks of Štrbské Pleso is the Grand Hotel Kempinski which consists of three interconnected historical buildings. From the tower of its Honeymoon Suite is a fine view of Tschirmer Lake and the mountains of the High Tatra. The Tatra Railway travels from Štrbské Pleso Station which connects a number of the Tatra region’s spa resorts. The tram-like carriages are very comfortable and the route continues steadily uphill, the view gradually opening-up. The railway has become an indispensable means of transport for growing Tatra tourism. The development of tourism began here with the implementation of the railroad in 1871 and brought Bratislava and Vienna, closer. A regular service with the railroad began on 20th, November 1908. At Lomnitz Peak there is an overwhelming view of the vastness of the Zipsian Basin that was created during the Last Ice Age. Close by is Skalnate Pleso, a small and mysterious shimmering lake, one of more than a hundred of the region’s mountain lakes. Lomnitz Peak is often wrapped in clouds, its rock walls covered with dwarf pines that stretch down to the lake. Tatranská Lomnica is situated at an altitude of eight hundred and seventy metres on the southern foothills of Lomnitz Peak. Just six kilometres from Smokovce, this tranquil location was founded at the end of the nineteenth century and is one of the region’s earliest settlements. The Tatra Mountain experience features true nature and undisturbed tranquility as well as both a luxurious lifestyle and pure nostalgia, indigenous culture, atmospheric transport, and above all, mighty mountains!

Tozeur Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Tozeur in Tunisia.
Once travelled by caravan trains, the seemingly infinite horizons of the region's salt lakes have remained unchanged. But on the edge of this lifeless world is the flourishing city of Tozeur. This small charming city in the south west of Tunisia is surrounded by a beautiful and fertile oasis landscape, the Oasis of Djerid: the oasis of the palm branch. The Bled El Djerid Oasis features approximately 200,000 palms and the dates that grow in this region, the Deglet Ennour, are considered to be among Tunisia's finest. The provincial capital of Tozeur is famous for its unique architecture and the buildings in the old part of the city, the Ouled Halef, are particularly fascinating. Hidden in one of the sunlit inner courtyards of the old area of the city is a small though extremely informative history and folklore museum that contains a large variety of Tozeur's traditional and historical objects that stem from its dwellings, crafts and trade, some of which date back to Roman times. The historic townscape of Tozeur is still influenced by the unique architecture of the 14th and 15th centuries and even today its charming alleys and idyllic courtyards are an influential centre of both Arabic and Islamic culture. Travellers from all over the world can experience a large variety of unique and exotic architecture and all of the special ambience of this intriguing city. In the cool shade of Tozeur's clay buildings, time is but a mirage!

Istanbul Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Istabul in Turkey.
Istanbul is a grand Turkish metropolis that extends across two continents and is influenced by various cultural and historic epochs. In the bright and ornate interior of the Hagia Sophia the splendid yet contrasting influence of both Christian Byzantine and Ottoman architecture has been preserved to the present day. Beneath the second largest cupola in the world, each of these cultures and religions unite in perfect harmony. Not far from the Hagia Sophia is the Yerebatan Saray that provides a fascinating insight into Constantinople's former water supply. Three hundred and thirty six columns support the vaulted ceiling of the cistern that was built in around 532 A.D. The Topkapi Palace was built by Sultan Mehmet The Second. It is one of the city's main tourist attractions and its exquisite interior indicates the lifestyle of the city's former Ottoman rulers. As the capital of three former World Empires, Istanbul truly enjoys a unique position among the great cities of both Europe and Asia.

Stift Melk (Austria) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Stift Melk in Austria.
The fine buildings of the Benedictine monastery of Melk majestically rise up from a plateau above the fascinating town on the River Danube. The elegant, yellow buildings of the monastery have become well-known far beyond Austria. The monastery’s eighteen hundred manuscripts are extremely valuable and although many treasures were destroyed by a devastating fire the oldest texts date back to the early 9th century. The 18th century marked the beginning of extensive construction work in the monastery that subsequently transformed the church into an enchanting example of Baroque design. The exquisite design of the church’s splendid interior was mostly the work of Italian architect, Antonio Beduzzi. But it is the remarkable architecture of the central Baroque buildings that have given Melk its reputation as being an icon of occidental monastery culture.

Knossós Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Knossos in Greece.
Around 7 kilometres southeast of Heraklion on the Greek island of Crete, is the Palace of Knossos, the largest of all the Minoan palaces, located on the picturesque, partly tree-covered Kefala Hill. As parts of the palace have been rebuilt, its former splendour makes a visit to Knossos even more worthwhile. At the beginning of the 20th century, large scale excavations of the former Minoan palace were carried out under the leadership of Englishman, Arthur Evans. In just three years, Evans and his team of archaeologists excavated an area of almost 20,000 square metres. Visitors can move around the newly built areas of the palace and imagine the former life of the Minoans. Almost all of the palace's 1200 rooms and splendid inner courtyards are asymmetrical which is in contr ast to the subsequent Ancient Greek epochs of strict symmetrical architecture. As with other Minoan palaces in Phaistos and Malia, around 1700 B.C., the first palace in Knossos was destroyed by a devastating earthquake. Around 100 years later, the palace was rebuilt and was simply known as the 'New Palace'. These buildings have also been referred to as the 'Labyrinth of the Minotaurs'. But if the legendary Minotaurs actually resided in the Palace of Knossos, it has yet to be confirmed by the world of archaeology!
