Burundi, officially the Republic of Burundi, is a landlocked country amid the African Great Lakes region where East and Central Africa converge.
One of the smallest countries in Africa, Burundi is landlocked and has an equatorial climate. Burundi is a part of the Albertine Rift, the western extension of the East African Rift. The country lies on a rolling plateau in the center of Africa. Burundi is bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and southeast, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west.

WE SPENT CHRISTMAS IN BUJUMBURA CITY, BURUNDI (And This Happened)
Bujumbura formerly Usumbura, is the economic capital, largest city and main port of Burundi. It ships most of the country's chief export, coffee, as well as cotton and tin ore. Bujumbura was formerly the country's normal capital. In late December 2018, Burundian president Pierre Nkurunziza announced that he would follow through on a 2007 promise to return Gitega its former political capital status, with Bujumbura remaining as economical capital and center of commerce. A vote in the Parliament of Burundi made the change official on 16 January 2019, with all branches of government expected to move to Gitega within three years.

How Safe Is Burundi for Travel?
Full safety review:
Burundi is a small country located in East Africa, with some cultural and geographical ties connecting it with Central Africa.
It is squeezed in between Rwanda, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
It has many risks to it – for example, traveling outside the capital of Bujumbura is a risky move, especially after nightfall.
Overall Burundi isn't a safe destination for travelers. You should know that many governments advise their citizens not to travel to the country as it is considered very high risk. Be very aware of your surroundings at all times. Both petty and violent crimes are normal here.

Gitega is the capital and one of the largest cities in Burundi. Located in the centre of the country, in the Burundian central plateau roughly 62 kilometres east by south of Bujumbura, Gitega was the seat of the Kingdom of Burundi until its abolition in 1966.
Gitega is also the capital of the homonymous province, one of the eighteen provinces of Burundi. It is located in the middle of the country, at roughly the same distance between the economical capital Bujumbura and Lake Tanganyika to the west, the Tanzanian border to the east—both at around 62 kilometres (39 mi)—and the Rwandan border, about 72 kilometres (45 mi) to the north.

I took a trip from Rotana to Rumonge the ride there is epic as you pass such impressive landscapes. If you have never been to Burundi this definitely a reason to go

Burundi's Capital - Things to do in and around Gitega
I spent two nights in Gitega and my days were very enlightening and delightful. On my list of things to do were
1. National Museum of Gitega
2. Gishora Drummers Sanctuary
3. Agasumo ka Mwaro
4.Local Market
5. Walking around town.
Personally I enjoy the walk around cities, towns or villages as you unintentionally discover things like the hotel I ended up staying at in Gitega. The city itself is clean and the people are friendly. With these activities its a perfect add on for your trip to Burundi
