Budapest is the capital and most populous city of Hungary and one of the largest cities in the European Union. With an estimated 2016 population of 1,759,407 distributed over a land area of about 525 square kilometres (203 square miles), Budapest is also one of the most densely populated major cities in the EU. Budapest is both a city and county, and forms the centre of the Budapest metropolitan area, which has an area of 7,626 square kilometres (2,944 square miles) and a population of 3,303,786, comprising 33 percent of the population of Hungary. The Budapest metropolitan area had a GDP of $141.0 billion (€129.4 billion) in 2016, accounting for 49.6 percent of the GDP of Hungary. GDP per capita in the city is $64,283, which means 148% of the EU average measured on purchasing power parity. Thereby the city is among the top 100 GDP performing cities in the world and making it one of the largest regional economies in the European Union.

The history of Budapest began with Aquincum, originally a Celtic settlement that became the Roman capital of Lower Pannonia. Hungarians arrived in the territory in the 9th century. Their first settlement was pillaged by the Mongols in 1241. The re-established town became one of the centres of Renaissance humanist culture by the 15th century. Following the Battle of Mohács and nearly 150 years of Ottoman rule, the region entered a new age of prosperity, and Budapest became a global city with the unification of Buda and Óbuda on the west bank with Pest on the east bank on November 17, 1873. Budapest also became the co-capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, a great power that dissolved in 1918, following World War I. The city was the focal point of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, the Battle of Budapest in 1945, and the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.

Budapest is cited as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, ranked as the world's second best city by Condé Nast Traveler, and Europe's 7th most idyllic place to live by Forbes. Among Budapest's important museums and cultural institutions, the most visited art museum is the Museum of Fine Arts, which is noted for one of the largest collections of all periods of European art and comprises more than 100,000 pieces. Further famous museums and galleries are the Hungarian National Museum, House of Terror, Franz Liszt Academy of Music, Hungarian State Opera House and National Széchényi Library. The central area of the city along the Danube River is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has many notable monuments, including the Hungarian Parliament, Buda Castle, Fisherman's Bastion, Gresham Palace, Széchenyi Chain Bridge, Matthias Church and the Liberty Statue. Another famous landmarks include Andrássy Avenue, St. Stephen's Basilica, Heroes' Square, the Great Market Hall, the Nyugati Railway Station built by the Eiffel Company of Paris in 1877 and the second-oldest metro line in the world, the Millennium Underground Railway. The city also has around 80 geothermal springs, the largest thermal water cave system, second largest synagogue, and third largest Parliament building in the world. Budapest attracts 4.4 million international tourists per year, making it the 25th most popular city in the world and the 6th in Europe.

Budapest: The Taste of Europe. Timelab & Havasi collaboration

For licensing and collabs:
Our magic LUTs and presets for color grading:

Subscribe to Timelab:

This new image-based video clip about Budapest is the result of an international collaboration between the Russian TimeLab video studio and the world-famous Hungarian musician, Havasi. In the video we see sleepy Budapest trams crossing the Széchenyi chain bridge.. dawn over the Danube River.. the majestic layout of the city from a bird's eye view... the glittering lights of Budapest by night... and the sunset over St Stephen's Basilica... and all this juxtaposed with the astounding music of Havasi.

The music in the clip is Havasi's track 'Golden Eagle’. It catches the special atmosphere, the amazing feeling of flight – and the underlying nobility of the city.

The project isn't their first collaboration with the Russian team. Last year, the Hungarians viewed a film Timelab had made about winter in St Petersburg - and suggested using the footage in one of their clips. This is how their Houdini's Dream project came about.

Our video team were extremely impressed with Budapest – it's a phenomenal city. It's soaked up the best of many of Europe's greatest cities. Look closely at the architecture, and you find something of everything – a little bit of Paris, a bit of St Petersburg, snippets of London... What really blew us away was the Chain Bridge over the Danube – it's an iconic symbol of the city. There are no restrictions on filming with drones in Budapest, The Hungarian state authorities and city administration are very laid-back about all that, and want to share what they have with tourists. It meant we had complete creative freedom.

Filmed on a Zenmuse X7 camera, attached to a DJI Inspire 2 drone.

The Timelab team are setting out on a whole series of international projects. “Upcoming we have Hong Kong, Switzerland, Rome, and Paris. We want to film in the Middle East countries, as well as China, and start to film in Africa. Creative art videos of world destinations are our passion. We aim to create a documentary film portrait for every corner of our amazing planet.

We don’t give permissions to use any of our footage without licensing / payment, it’s also not available for non-commercial use.

Budapest - Spice of Europe

Is it a dream or reality, that captivates me with its beauty?
Since we arrived, I feel closer to life.
I've been mesmerised by you for so long, yet every minute is a new discovery.
The whole world is open here.
As an unwritten story waiting to reveal itself.
And we look for the same things, over and over again.
New adventures…
Discovery.
Beauty.
Surprises.
Inspiration.
Elegance.
And all these things are here…
To impress us with their beauty.
To entertain us.
I know more about you with every moment.
The book of our lives gets filled with story.
It’s worth nothing at all without you.

Spice of Europe.
Budapest.

Budapest in 4K

The journey of Cities in 4K continues through Budapest, an amazing city who occupies both banks of river Danube. It is the largest and the capital city of Hungary and one of the largest cities in EU.

Some scenes which are part of this video and places from where the shots are taken: Elizabeth Bridge, Chain Bridge, Liberty Bridge, View from the Buda Castle in two directions, panoramic view from the Citadella, St. Stephan´s Basilica, view from the observation deck of St.Stephan´s church, Adam Clark Tunnel, Heroes Square, Fisherman´s Bastion, Parliament Building Budapest.

Budapest is a huge city with a rich historical, political and industrial background. There are a lot of historical buildings and squares which should be seen and explored. A lot of hotels and restaurant are also located in old buidlings with an interesting history. Such a hotel, which we kindly recommend, is the Continental Hotel Budapest ( with ARAZ restaurant.

If you need some help to explore the city or some information about the most popular Hungarian restaurants and buildings you can use the services of Ambience Travel:

„Enjoy the award winning services of Ambiance Travel, honoured by the „Best Travel Services 2014” title. Carefully selected hotels, restaurants and creative program ideas in Budapest and in the country side of Hungary create the basis of what we offer to you – all spiced up with attention to details and „that” little extra! This make our services handcrafted for you.“

Unfortunately we didn´t got the permission for using the drone DJI Inspire 1, so, this time we can´t offer you drone footages from the beautiful Budapest.

The Hungarian City Built Over 80 Underwater Caves

As one of Europe’s most famous cities, Budapest has become a tourist hotspot known for its history, its architecture and its love of water. While most people soak above the surface in the city’s famed geothermal baths, below the metropolis lies a secret subterranean world ripe for exploration. The Hungarian capital is home to over 80 geothermal springs. As this naturally heated water flowed deep below the Earth’s surface, it carved out hundreds of caves, making Budapest home to the largest collection of thermal caves in the world. Though divers have charted more than four miles of tunnels since the 1950s, much remains to be explored.

This Great Big Story was made in partnership with the Hungarian Tourism Agency. (

Budapest really has a thousand faces. In Budapest it is not worth making a quick visit for a weekend, as there are many attractions to visit and because the topography of the city has an amazing variety. The mountains of Buda, the beautiful banks of the Danube, Margaret Island and the bustling old town of Pest are all worth seeing. The divided character of the city by the Danube is special and immediately surprises visitors. The difference between the two parts linked by bridges, Buda and Pest, is a specialty that offers different trips to the past. While in Buda we are captivated by the spas of Turkish times, the tranquility of the Tabán and the cobbled alleys of the historic Castle district, Pest delights with its variety: the elegance of Andrássy Avenue, the fabulous Opera House with a metropolitan character, the marvelous dome from the Basilica, next to the contemporary museums, the typical bar areas and the alternative places of unique character with their hidden world. We have two attractions that are part of the UNESCO world heritage: the panorama of the Danube bank and the neighborhood of the Buda castle and the Andrássy avenue with its historical surroundings. Among the 10 main attractions of Budapest, we could list 10 others of equal importance: we could list here the Museum of Applied Arts, part of the secessionist heritage, the works of modernist and Bauhaus architecture, the so-called buildings of socialism, or the building modern yet unassuming 21st century Palace of Arts encompassing a wonderful concert hall and the Ludwig Museum. Those who spend just one weekend visiting Budapest run the risk of having to return. Budapest offers several dozen adventures.

A stunning capital, with the green hills of Buda and urban Pest separated by the Danube, Budapest is a real gem. Despite the end of the Soviet influence, it is only today that signs of its recent independence are felt. Budapest boasts a vibrant nightlife, offers many architectural finds and winding little streets to explore as well as various cellars full of wine to sample! The country is surrounded by Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia and Croatia, making it a Central European country; don't forget this because the Hungarians, or “Magyars” as they like to call themselves, do not consider themselves to belong to Eastern Europe. Often compared to Vienna, Budapest is an up-and-coming city with plenty to see, do and taste. Freed from the Soviet and communist grip for only 21 years, the past enthusiasm for the reconstruction of the city is still present. Roads are built throughout the city, buildings are renovated and cleaned one after the other, bars and restaurants appear everywhere, as do shopping areas. The communist era is finally fading little by little.

the beautiful Budapest ,Hungary

The neo-Gothic Parliament, the biggest building in Hungary with its 268 metres (879 ft) length, containing amongst other things the Hungarian Crown Jewels. Saint Stephen's Basilica, where the Holy Right Hand of the founder of Hungary, King Saint Stephen is on display. The Hungarian cuisine and café culture: for example, Gerbeaud Café, and the Százéves, Biarritz, Fortuna, Alabárdos, Arany Szarvas, Kárpátia and the world-famous Mátyás Pince Restaurants. There are Roman remains at the Aquincum Museum, and historic furniture at the Nagytétény Castle Museum, just 2 out of 223 museums in Budapest. Another historical museum is the House of Terror, hosted in the building that was the venue of the Nazi Headquarters. The Castle Hill, the River Danube embankments and the whole of Andrássy út have been officially recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Castle Hill and the Castle District; there are three churches here, six museums, and a host of interesting buildings, streets and squares. The former Royal Palace is one of the symbols of Hungary – and has been the scene of battles and wars ever since the 13th century. Nowadays it houses two impressive museums and the National Széchenyi Library. The nearby Sándor Palace contains the offices and official residence of the President of Hungary. The seven-hundred-year-old Matthias Church is one of the jewels of Budapest, it is in neo-Gothic style, decorated with coloured shingles and elegant pinnacles. Next to it is an equestrian statue of the first king of Hungary, King Saint Stephen, and behind that is the Fisherman's Bastion, built in 1905 by the architect Frigyes Schulek, the Fishermen's Bastions owes its name to the namesake corporation that during the Middle Ages was responsible of the defence of this part of ramparts, from where opens out a panoramic view of the whole city. Statues of the Turul, the mythical guardian bird of Hungary, can be found in both the Castle District and the Twelfth District.
Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Charles and Chief Rabbi Róbert Frölich in the Dohány Street Synagogue, the largest synagogue in Europe

In Pest, arguably the most important sight is Andrássy út. This Avenue is an elegant 2.5 kilometres (2 miles) long tree-lined street that covers the distance from Deák Ferenc tér to the Heroes Square. On this Avenue overlook many important sites. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As far as Kodály körönd and Oktogon both sides are lined with large shops and flats built close together. Between there and Heroes' Square the houses are detached and altogether grander. Under the whole runs continental Europe's oldest Underground railway, most of whose stations retain their original appearance. Heroes' Square is dominated by the Millenary Monument, with the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in front. To the sides are the Museum of Fine Arts and the Kunsthalle Budapest, and behind City Park opens out, with Vajdahunyad Castle. One of the jewels of Andrássy út is the Hungarian State Opera House. Statue Park, a theme park with striking statues of the Communist era, is located just outside the main city and is accessible by public transport.

The Dohány Street Synagogue is the largest synagogue in Europe, and the second largest active synagogue in the world. The synagogue is located in the Jewish district taking up several blocks in central Budapest bordered by Király utca, Wesselényi utca, Grand Boulevard and Bajcsy Zsilinszky road. It was built in moorish revival style in 1859 and has a seating capacity of 3,000. Adjacent to it is a sculpture reproducing a weeping willow tree in steel to commemorate the Hungarian victims of the Holocaust.

The city is also home to the largest medicinal bath in Europe (Széchenyi Medicinal Bath) and the third largest Parliament building in the world, once the largest in the world. Other attractions are the bridges of the capital. Seven bridges provide crossings over the Danube, and from north to south are: the Árpád Bridge (built in 1950 at the north of Margaret Island); the Margaret Bridge (built in 1901, destroyed during the war by an explosion and then rebuilt in 1948); the Chain Bridge (built in 1849, destroyed during World War II and the rebuilt in 1949); the Elisabeth Bridge (completed in 1903 and dedicated to the murdered Queen Elisabeth, it was destroyed by the Germans during the war and replaced with a new bridge in 1964); the Liberty Bridge ,the Petőfi Bridge (completed in 1937, destroyed during the war and rebuilt in 1952); the Rákóczi Bridge . Most remarkable for their beauty are the Margaret Bridge, the Chain Bridge and the Liberty Bridge. The world's largest panorama photograph was created in Budapest in 2010.

Budapest Travel Guide - Hungary Joyful time

Budapest is the capital city of Hungary. With a unique, youthful atmosphere, a world-class classical music scene as well as a pulsating night life increasingly appreciated among European youth and, last but not least, an exceptionally rich offering of natural thermal baths, Budapest is one of Europe's most delightful and enjoyable cities. Due to its scenic setting and its architecture it is nicknamed Paris of the East. In 1987 Budapest was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List for the cultural and architectural significance of the Banks of the Danube, the Buda Castle Quarter and Andrássy Avenue.

Budapest is the economic, historic, and cultural capital of Hungary, with approximately 2 million inhabitants and approximately 2.7 million visitors per year. Hungarians are proud of what their beautiful capital has to offer and of its contributions to European culture. They also take pride in their unique language which is very different from all other European languages.

While Buda has been the capital of Hungary - or that of the Osman-occupied territory - for the better part of a millennium, it has become a grand cosmopolitan city during the country's fast industrialisation in the late nineteenth century. The population of 2.1 million in 1989 decreased formally due to suburbanization.

The climate of Budapest is continental with cold winters and warm summers. Budapest has one of the highest difference between the highest and lowest recorded temperatures as the record high is 40°C (104°F) and the record low is -25°C (-14°F). The coldest months are from November to March with January being the coldest one with the average low and high being -4°C (25°F) and 1°C (33°F) respectively. Winters are also cloudy with an average of only 48 monthly sunshine hours on average in December. Temperatures at around -15°C (5°F) aren't uncommon during this part of the year. Snowfalls happen many times annually with as much as 20-40 cm falling in a single day.

The river Danube splits the city approxiately in half, with the west side called Buda and the east called Pest. Most of Budapest's highlights are within easy walking distance of each other and the city centre. All major areas have sidewalks and crosswalks for pedestrians. Budapest's extensive public transit system is generally convenient and easy to use. Tourists can navigate most central areas by metro, but a few major destinations, particularly on the Buda side, are served by busses or trams.

Budapest’s beauty is not all God given; humankind has played a role in shaping this pretty face too. Architecturally, the city is a treasure trove, with enough baroque, neoclassical, Eclectic and art nouveau buildings to satisfy everyone. Overall, though, Budapest has a fin de siècle feel to it, for it was then, during the capital’s ‘golden age' in the late 19th century, that most of what you see today was built.

There's a lot more to Hungarian food than goulash, and it remains one of the most sophisticated styles of cooking in Eastern and Central Europe. Magyars may exaggerate when they say that there are three essential world cuisines – French, Chinese and their own. But Budapest’s reputation as a food capital dates largely from the late 19th and the first half of the 20th century and, despite a fallow period under communism, the city is once again commanding attention.
