I take a tour of the Brunei Night Market with local lady, Izzy. She shows me round the market sampling local delicacies for our dinner.
The Night Market (Gadong Pasar Malam) is open year round from 4pm-11pm and is located in the Gadong Fish Market parking lot.

Pasar Malam Gadong (Night Market)
The famous Pasar Gadong, also known as the Night Market is located right next to The Mall at Gadong. It opens daily from around 4 pm till late. A great place to try out the local food if you’ve not done so. There’s a wide variety that you can choose from – roti beef/mutton/chicken, satay, chicken wings, barbecued/grilled fish, fried kuey teow, lamb chops, beef steaks, ayam penyet, traditional kueh melayu (sweet pancakes with peanuts, raisins or sugar fillings) and more. Food is usually cook only when there’s an order, so it’s piping hot when served. The best part is, each dish usually cost only $1 – $3. So you can have as many orders as your belly can take. There are also stalls selling drinks, fresh vegetables, fresh fruit and even clothes and accessories. One can easily spend 2-3 hrs hopping from stall to stall. Only thing to note – place can get real warm and smoky from all the frying and cooking under the tentage so be sure you are dress for the occasion. But the good thing is the place is not crowded with plenty of room to move about.

One of the best ways to experience Bruneian food culture is to go to the Gadong Night Market in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei Darussalam. It is very similar to Hawker centres in Singapore, where fresh street food is prepared in a community centre and is very affordable. We came here after visiting the beautiful Bolkiah Mosque and set a $6 challenge to feast on a variety of the locals' favourite food items. We had Nasi Goreng (fried rice), Mango Shake, Milo Dinosaur, aneka gorengan (fried snacks) and homemade chocolate cake. We also peeked inside the Gadong Mall Brunei!
Honestly, this is one of the best things to do in Brunei not for the food alone, but for a chance to see and interact with lovely locals and curious visitors.

2017년 10월, 브루나이 최초사장교인 ‘순가이 브루나이’가 개통됐다. 강을 오가는 거리가 기존 40km에서 712m로 대폭 단축됐지만 사람들은 여전히 배를 이용해 강을 건넌다. 강을 건너 가동 야시장에 도착했다. 브루나이 최대 번화가인 이곳은 한 때 길거리의 좌판 시장이었는데 최근 리모델링됐다. 현지인들이 저녁 식사를 해결하기 위해 자주 찾는 곳이다. 저렴한 가격과 다양한 음식들로 여행자들의 발길도 사로잡는다. 한 가게 앞에 사람들이 줄을 서있다. 요란한 불꽃 요리가 심상치 않아 보여 나도 음식을 주문했다. 기름 육수에 달걀을 넣고 볶은 후 브루나이 전통, 넓은 면을 넣는다. 그리고 특유의 붉은 양념장과 함께 골고루 섞어 볶으면 ‘미츠가울’이 완성된다. 보기엔 우리나라의 자장면과 비슷해 보이지만 그 맛은 다르다. 손맛을 더한 매운맛이 일품인 브루나이 전통 볶음면, 여행에서 빠질 수 없는 미식을 맛봤다. 가동 야시장은 식재료가 신선하기로 유명하다. 이슬람 국가이기에 돼지고기를 먹진 않지만 남중국해와 브루나이 강에서 갓 잡은 해산물들이 이곳 음식에 풍미를 더해준다. 눈에 띄는 요리들을 조금씩 구입해 나만의 한 상을 차려 봤다. 맛깔스럽고 푸짐한 브루나이 음식들로 배가 든든해진다. 전반적으로 동남아 특유의 향이 강하지 않고 달달한 맛이 누구에게나 높은 점수를 받을 수 있을 것 같다.
