BVI's British Virgin Islands - 30 Knot WIND, DIVING & Full Moon Party!

BVI's British Virgin Islands - 30 Knot WIND, DIVING & Full Moon Party!

This is the second installation of our sailing in the British Virgin Islands (BVI's) series, and in this episode we sail to Norman Island (Treasure Island), then to Jost Van Dyke to hang out at the Full Moon Party. We get a couple Dives in, see a shark! Had a hell of a sail hitting 30 knot winds, lively seas...good time!

We fly off to the British Virgin Islands to Charter a Sailboat, Josh is hired to Captain the vessel for a group of new-to-sailing keeners, show them the ropes, expedite a training program based on ASA training syllabus, plus a wealth of knowledge obtained over his lifetime of sailing. Of course, the constraints of time and editing will see some gaps from the viewers perspective as to several aspects of the training, but we try to share some highlights...and there is no shortage of drama to unfold during this mini-series of our time sailing in the BVI's!

BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS MUST: Trellis Bay and Jeremy's Kitchen

Hey Castaways! This was another stop during our sailing trip aboard the Viramar charter yacht. We sailed into Trellis Bay, which is Beef Island in the British Virgin Islands. It's connected to Tortola by a bridge and is where the airport is located.

This is just about the only place in the BVI you can still see some signs of hurricanes Irma and Maria. The restaurants are open, but there are some damaged boats still up on the beach.

We spend out time at Jeremy's Kitchen, a great little restaurant with lots of character and charm. We didn't stay long, but long enough for me to enjoy a damn good Painkiller!

Here is the website for Viramar, I highly recommend a sailing vacation if you haven't done one!

ABOUT US

Hi! We are Ryan (RumShopRyan) and Crystal (Castaway Crystal), we document, photograph, and film the best the Caribbean has to offer. Whether it’s stunning beaches, relaxing hotels, friendly restaurants, or soggy beach bars…we want to share it and inspire others to explore the islands.

MEET US!

Who Is RumShopRyan:
Howdy! I’m Ryan and I hail from the land-locked, can’t get any further from the ocean, state of Kansas. I moved to laid back southwest Florida in 2001. I didn’t know a single person and didn’t have a job. Risky I know, but the ocean was calling and I had to answer.
I’m a huge fan of Kansas City sports, so you’ll probably see a lot of Jayhawks, Chiefs and Royals attire in my photos. Kansas City is a great town and I’m glad I’m from there, but the coastal life was calling. It’s kind of like Kenny Chesney’s “island boy” song. Check out the lyrics and you’ll see what I mean.

I write because I’m passionate about the Caribbean and the island lifestyle, and it’s my way to share it with you. If it has anything to do with the Caribbean, rum drinks, beach style music, or Caribbean culture, you’ll be able to find it on this site.

When in the Caribbean you’ll find a camera around my neck and note pad in my pocket. This is how I document the experiences in unique and interesting ways and bring it back to you, the Castaways.

Who is Castaway Crystal:
I was raised in Southwest Florida so it’s no surprise that I have a love for beaches, water and nature. As a child, most weekends were spent fishing in the warm gulf waters on the family boat. As an adult, most weekends are spent soaking up the sun on Ft. Myers Beach. Even though I have always loved the coastal life, I don’t think I fully appreciated it until I moved to Nashville, TN. I’m all about experiencing new things, and as a Licensed Massage Therapist I thought it would be amazing to massage some of Nashville’s biggest stars (a girl can dream right?). But I missed the sun and sand too much—and let’s not forget the rum runners! After a year I couldn’t take it anymore, this sun bunny moved back to her coast of somewhere beautiful.

I’ve always been passionate about photography and writing but my passions never really had a purpose until I met Ryan. I couldn’t be happier being Ryan’s first mate and sharing my photos and stories with you. May they inspire you to go after your tropical dreams and wishes. Make a plan…Set a date…Just go!

FULL MOON PARTY SURPRISE! Trellis Bay, BVI

We were in attendance of the full moon party in Trellis Bay, Tortola, British Virgin Islands on Sunday January 27th 2013. It was quite an event as Aragorn's Art Studio and Trellis Cyber Cafe teamed up to bring in a 20-ton crane to surprise the audience with something new, and it was quite a show!

Tortola Island - Full Moon Party Zone.m4v

Tortola Island - Full Moon Party: This is where they hold the full moon party on Tortola Island. They are renown for their craziness. You only have to view the photos on the bar walls to witness the outlandishness of these events. I was happy to experience the Full Moon Party bar during the quiet of the day as we did a quick tour around Tortola Island, post Necker Island trip - spending a week with Sir Richard Branson, Joe Polish, Yanik Silver and the Maverick Group.

Site of the Full Moon Parties on Tortola

Tortola, part of the British Virgin Islands, has this Bohemian-style, laid-back area near the airport where you catch the ferry to the other islands. I had to wait a day after my sailing courses before I could fly back, so I stayed here. Accommodations and food at the Loose Mongoose guesthouse were great - they even had veggie-burgers on the menu! I absolutely love this place - you can lounge around on hammocks and sip your favorite drink while surfing the web via wireless access. But the mosquitoes do come out and they do bite, so be prepared.

Full Moon Parties Trellis Bay and the Bomba Shack

.
Drink and dance on the beach 'til dawn under the light of the full moon, what can be more Caribbean in spirit than that? Monthly (adults-only) full moon parties are held at Trellis Bay on Tortola (walking distance from the Beef Island airport) and at the legendary Bomba Shack on Tortola's West End, where the price of admission includes a chance to try Bomba's (possibly psychedelic) mushroom tea..
