Bosnia and Herzegovina - Discover the hidden pearl of Europe

Buna Spring & Tekija Blagaj, (Bosnia & Herzegovina Discover the hidden pearl of Europe)2018

Vrelo Bune is the natural and architectural ensemble at the Buna river spring near Blagaj village and a part of the wider Townscape ensemble of the town of Blagaj - Historical and Natural Heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina, southeast of Mostar. It is impossible to separate the natural values from the cultural and historical heritage of Blagaj, since its distinctive quality is in the coexistence of the natural and the man-made, in the integration of the physical structure into the landscape.

Blagaj is a village-town (kasaba) in the south-eastern region of theMostar basin, in the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It stands at the edge of Bišće plain and is one of the most valuable mixed urban and rural structures in Bosnia and Herzegovina, distinguished from other similar structures in its urban layout. Blagaj was most likely named for its mild weather patterns since blaga in Bosnian means mild. Blagaj is situated at the spring of the Buna river and a historical tekke (tekija or Dervish monastery). The Blagaj Tekija was built around 1520, with elements of Ottoman architecture and Mediterranean style and is considered a national monument.

Why go there?

A wonderful place, where history, architecture, and nature blend together.

When to go there?

All year round – the town drops into a pleasant zone of the Mediterranean climate.

How to get there?

Get to Blagaj by bus from Mostar.

Today we continue our Bosnian holiday by venturing further into the heart of Herzegovina and explore Konjic, Jablanica, Počitelj, Blagaj, and Mostar (where we see a jump from the famous bridge!). Join me as we take a day tour from Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and explore the beauty of southern Bosnia.

In Konjic, we explore the old bridge & old town. In Jablanica, we learn about the greatest WW2 story of Bosnia - the Battle of Neretva. Then we explore Počitelj, to explore the pearl of Ottoman-mediterranean architecture, before heading to Blagaj where we visit the dervish house and buna river. Then we finally end our trip in the epic city of Mostar

This UNESCO based trip is undoubtedly one of the best ways to plunge into experiencing this southern region of Herzegovina and its breathtaking scenery. It also offers a deeper insight into the fascinating cultural diversity and mind provoking history of the country.

Vrelo Bune - Blagaj - Bosnia and Herzegovina (Mostar)

Vrelo Bune is the natural and architectural ensemble at the Buna river spring situated in the outskirts of Blagaj, some 15 kilometers south-east of Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The source of the Buna river is the finest example of an underground karst river. It's one the largest and one of the most beautiful springs in Europe, producing approximately 43 000 liters of water per second. The water flows through a cave that is part of a 200-meter high stone cliff wall and single-handedly creates the Buna River. The Buna is a short river and it is a left bank tributary of the Neretva river.
By the source of the Buna river also stands the Blagaj Tekke (a muslim dervish Sufi monastery), that was built in the 15th century. The musafirhana (guest house) and turbe (mausoleum) are tucked into the natural surroundings, constituting a single entity with the cliffs, source of the Buna river and mills. The ensemble of the Blagaj Tekija was presumably built very soon after Ottoman rule was established in Bosnia, around 1520 at the latest.
Besides the historic architecture, stunning rocks and river, Blagaj is also home to numerous endemic species and diverse flora.
Vrelo Bune together with the dervish Tekija is curently under UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.

Blagaj, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Throughout its history the region of Herzegovina has been the meeting point of different cultures and civilizations. Today the country has a lot of natural beauties that attract more and more tourists each year.
One of the magical places that take us back to the past is Blagaj, situated only 12 km away from Mostar.
The small and magical village of Blagaj is located on the river Buna.
The Buna spring is one of the largest and most beautiful springs in Europe and probably the best example of underground karst river. Buna flows out from the cave beneath the cliffs of 200 meters high and independently creates a dark blue-emerald green river, which runs for about nine kilometers to the west and flows into the Neretva River near the village of Buna.
The beautiful scenery and rich history had been home dervish house which is one of the most important monuments from the period of early Ottoman culture in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Dervishes are known for their special rituals performed and are still performed - zikir (praise to God).
The Turkish sultan was delighted with Buna and so he ordered to build Tekke, the monastery of dervishes.
Tekke on the Buna in Blagaj is an important monument of the early Ottoman period in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is a place where, by special ritual, the dervishes performed – and perform today – Zikr (praising God).
Tekke in Blagaj belonged to various dervish orders, first there were Bektashi order, then Halveti and Kaderi orders. Today the place is headed by Vekil (Deputy Shaikh) of Naqshbandi order.
Tekke on Buna was established shortly after the fall of Herzegovina under the Turkish rule in 1446. year, at the latest around in 1520. year. In the earliest period, bektash order was the ruling ideological doctrine of the Turkish conquests, especially of the Army (light shock cavalry) and Janissaries.
Oriental Bosnian architecture Tekke in Blagaj attracts with its white double facade, floor and extended along that looks like a balcony, whose contours are reflected on the surface of the dark green water of the river Buna.
Dervish - Sufi brotherhood best known for his asceticism, and in that preaches one of the most mystical dimension of Islam. Tekke at Buna in Blagaj is open to visitors throughout the year and in her beautiful garden, with a magnificent view of the source of the River serves refreshing drinks, tea and Turkish coffee.
Blagaj and its surroundings are surrounded by a diverse landscape, groundwater and rocky cliffs. Tourists all over visit this place remain amazed at his green and clean water that you meet wherever you turn.

Tekija in Blagaj: Mysterious building on Buna which attracts tourists from all over the world

Blagaj is an old town built at the time of the Roman Empire. It was not then a town, but a fortress, and in time it developed into a real pearl of Herzegovina. The greatest attention is drawn to the source of Buna, which, as many say, is the most mysterious building - Tekija. In the video footage, see how magically the air of this part of Blagaj looks like.
During the time of Osmanlija Blagaj was the seat of the Blagaj vilayet, then cadillac and divided into several mahala, among which were Carska, Hasanagina, Bunska and Galičići. The city had seven mosques, two chimneys, four musafirhans, a medrese, two mektebs, tekes, four stone bridges on the river Buna, one on Bunica and two on the pits of Posrt, kiraethanu and seven mills with 28 mills.
In the area around today's Stjepan Town, as formerly called Old Town Blagaj, numerous remains were found in the prehistoric, Illyrian, Roman, Byzantine and Medieval Period, and Konstantin Porfirogenit mentions Bona in his records as part of Zahumlja. The main contribution to the development of today's Blagaj area was the proximity of the main trade routes connecting the Adriatic Sea with the hinterland of Bosnia's Neretva Valley (via Narenti).
The most important part of Blagaj, known to tourists around the world, is Tekija at the Buna River, which represents a significant cultural monument from the early Turkish era in BiH. This is the place where, with special rituals, dervishes performed and still perform zikir (glory to God) today.
The source of the River Buna is one of the largest and most prosperous sources in Europe and probably the best example of the underground karst river. Buna stands out from the cave under a 200-meter-high rock and creates a dark blue-emerald green river that runs about nine miles west and flows into the Neretva near the village of Buna.
The Turkish sultan was, enthusiastically, thrilled with Bun, and ordered that a tekytium be found close to its source. The 16th century art was built for the needs of Derviska kulta and the gathering of the Sufi Dervish fraternity, and served as a dormitory for Sufi travelers. The Oriental Bosnian architecture of Blessed Blessing attracts its whitewashed double façade, the first floor and the extended room that faces the balcony, whose contours reflect the surface of the dark green waters of the River Buna.
Tekija in Blagaj is still one of the most ancient places in BiH, because the dervish-Sufi fraternity is best known for its asceticism as well as being preached by one of the most mystical dimensions of Islam. Tekija on Buna in Blagava is open for visitors throughout the year and in its beautiful garden, with magnificent views of the Bune source, are refreshing drinks, tea and Turkish coffee.

You NEED to Visit MOSTAR. Here's Why | Bosnia & Herzegovina | Ryan Pelle

Let me show you why Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina is more than just a day-trip destination. I stayed for 2 days in Mostar and it was so worth it.

Mostar is a historic city on the southern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It's most famous for its incredibly beautiful bridge. But Mostar is more than just its bridge. It's countryside is also unbelievably beautiful.

During the Bosnian War in the 90's, Mostar is the hardest hit and most bombarded city in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The war has left indelible marks on the city and its inhabitants. You can still see them when you walk around the city today.

Today, Mostar is a buzzling city full of cafes and restaurants. It's doing its hardest to heal from the effects of Bosnian war.

Here are the places I've visited during my 2-day stay in Mostar:

Bosnia & harzegovina,Discover the hidden Pearl of HARZEGOVINA

The name Herzegovina means duke's land, referring to the medieval duchy of Stjepan Vukčić Kosača who took the title Herceg of Saint Sava. Herceg is derived from the German title Herzog.

Discover BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA | One of Europe's Hidden Secrets!

============================================================

In today’s video we visualize impressions from our trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina. We rather coincidentally became aware of this destination. We had limited knowledge in advance of our trip and got caught off guard by the beautiful landscapes, historic towns and the hospitality of its inhabitants.

On our arrival in Sarajevo we rented a car and traveled to Mostar (2 hours by car). We stayed in a great Airbnb with an amazing view of Stari Most (old stone bridge) and an incredible breakfast. The old town of Mostar is touristy but worth visiting.

2 days later we continued our journey and stopped at the Kravica waterfalls and in Počitelj - a small village with an impressive fortress and a wonderful view of the Neretva Valley. After a day full of impressions we arrived at Boračko Jezero - a lake in the mountains 1,5 hours from Mostar. We hardly saw other tourists around the lake and it seemed as the time has stood still.

On our return journey to Sarajevo we stopped in Blagaj and Konjic. In Blagaj you can find the Buna fountain with crystal-clear water and a 600 years old Dervish monastery. Konjic is famous for its old stone bridge.

Our journey through Bosnia and Herzegovina has been a wonderful experience and our expectations were exceeded. The country offers a great mix of nature and culture away from mass tourism. We can highly recommend to add Bosnia and Herzegovina to your bucket list.

Discover Bosnia & Herzegovina

Well on the road to recovery after recent tragedies, Bosnia and Herzegovina (or just Bosnia for short) is a small, friendly country with some standout sights. Many people may only know it from crossing the 20km of Bosnian coastline that separates Dubrovnik from the rest of Croatia. We don't suggest stopping there though, as its one town is not very impressive. But you should make time on your travels throughout the territory of the former Yugoslavia to travel to Bosnia. It is definitely worthwhile, as those who visit always come away with plenty of good things to say.
