7 Best Places to visit in Cambodia | Tired of Thailand? Give Cambodia a go. Here are seven amazing places you've got to visit.

Tired of Thailand? Want to experience a slice of ancient Southeast Asia? Give Cambodia a go.

It may not have the same Full Moon party reputation of its neighbour, nor the historical notoriety of next-door Vietnam. But don't let that put you off exploring this beautiful country, full of ancient temples and stunning landscapes - and there's plenty of cheap beer!

Having brought us the best of Vietnam, our roving reporter Cat McGloin shares her seven must-see places in Cambodia:

1. Phnom Penh

Cambodia's capital teems with tuk-tuk drivers and street food vendors. Weave through the city, spotting roadside pagodas nestled amongst grand French colonial houses. Why not try a local delicacy, deep fried tarantula? When cocktail hour calls, there's no better place to catch a sundowner and appreciate some colonial grandeur than at the Foreign Correspondence Club on the bank on the Mekong River that runs through the city.

2. The Killing Fields

Just outside Phnom Penh lies one of the largest mass graves sites in Cambodia, where it is estimated over one million Cambodians were executed during the Khmer Rouge regime. The scale of the site, coupled with the tales told over your audio guide, is deeply moving and provides real insight in to the country's violent past, as well as the regime's enduring legacy. You can couple your visit here with a trip to Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum by bargaining with a tuk-tuk driver.

3. Angkor Archaeological Park

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is by far Cambodia's, if not Southeast Asia's, largest tourist attraction. Each year thousands of visitors make the short journey north of Siem Reap to visit the magnificent remains of the capitals of the Khmer Empire, dating from the ninth century. Head out before dawn to catch the sunrise behind the site's most famous temple, Angkor Wat. Be sure to check out Angkor Thom, made famous by Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider films.

4. Siem Reap

The drop-off point for Angkor Archaeological Park, Siem Reap has developed into a tourist hub over recent years. Grab a few bargains at the night market, or get a fish pedicure for pennies, before heading to Pub Street for...well the name says it all really! For daytime tranquility, head to Wat Bo Village and relax in the gardens of the oldest Buddhist temple.

5. Sihanoukville

Fondly referred to as 'Snooky', the main reason to stop here is the beaches, beautifully sandy and not as crowded as Thailand's. With six sandy spots to chill out in, you'll be spoilt for choice. Less popular than Victory or Serendipity Beach, Otres Beach is usually quieter and a good spot to try your hand at windsurfing or kayaking.

6. Koh Rong

Forget Koh Samui, Koh Rong is the new desert island paradise. Only accessible by a small local ferry, not many travellers make the short ride out from Sihanoukville to this picturesque spot. With 23 pristine beaches to choose from, you'll be tempted to laze the days away in the sunshine. For the adventurous, there's plenty of opportunities for hiking, diving and snorkelling. You'll find cheap cocktails, tasty Khmer food and the best sunset sea view at Monkey Island.

7. Kampot

Once famous for its salt and pepper production, Kampot is a charming riverside town. Days spent watching the river, slurping noodles in the market and cycling through the hills are what this place was made for. If you're feeling adventurous, take a trip 20km out of Kampot and visit the French colonial ghost town, Bokor Hill Station. Originally a retreat for colonial settlers, it was abandoned when the Khmer Rouge took control of the area in the 1970's and has remained eerily untouched ever since. #travel, #traveltips, #travelnfx, #tourism Book Your Hotel at very cheap Price -

Travel Guide to Cambodia

With Siem Reap and the famous Angkor temples that were built here between the 9th and 15th centuries, Cambodia has one of the greatest tourist attractions anywhere in the world.

Covering some 400sqks, the UNESCO World Heritage Angkor Archiological Park is home to scores of temples, canals, bridges and gateways. The most famous temple is Angkor Wat, built during the first half of the 12th century and today receives more than 2 million visitors a year. Best seen at dawn before the crowds arrive and as the sun turns the east face pink, it is a truly incredible site. Ta Prohm is famous for the temple strangling trees that seem to devour the ancient structures and my own favourite is the beautiful Angkor Thom, or Bayon Temple, with its serene collection of exquisitely carved faces. With so much to see you’ll need at least two if not three days here.

But where in the past people thought that the temples of Siem Reap were all Cambodia had to offer, now things are changing. For a start there are many more wonderful Angkorian and pre-Angkorian temples to see such as at Preah Vihear, on the border with Thailand, Banteay Chhmar and at Sambor Prei Kuk on the road to Phnom Penh. And in Battambang, the provincial capital of Battambang Province, is an atmospheric and quite town, which is home to an array of temples, both old and new, and the famous bamboo train, on which our clients can take a stunning ride through the countryside.

And if you want to get further off the beaten track on your own private adventure, why not travel up to Phnom Kulem, otherwise known as the Sacred Mountains. Here you can visit waterfalls, a local village and school and trek through the jungle to find remote and fascinating temples, like the stone elephant deep in the jungle. Here you can stay in an amazing camp, put up especially for you, and have night of glamping amongst nature as the only travellers for miles around.

At some stage on your journey through Cambodia, you are bound to pass through here, the nation’s capital, Phnom Penh.

Whilst Phnom Penh my not have the plethora of obvious tourist attractions some of the other capital cities of the region possess, it is still an interesting place and definitely deserves a day or two exploring. Sitting at the confluence of the Tonlé Sap and Mekong Rivers, packed with great restaurant and bars, there are plenty of places to explore including the Wat Phnom, the city’s first pagoda, the old French Quarter and the towns busy market. There are also some great places to stay the most famous of which is Raffles Hotel.

Heading south from Phnom Penh you’ll come to Kep. Under French rule, Kep – known at the time as Kep-Sur-Mer – was Cambodia’s most prestigious beach town. Established in 1908 it became a thriving resort for the French and following independence for the Cambodian elite. Although the beach is nothing much to shout about, its architecture, its cuisine and its sleepy, laid-back atmosphere make it is a lovely place to discover.

The most important thing about Kep today is its famous crab market, which is a fascinating place to visit as the catch comes in. It’s also a good place to grab lunch.

From here you can head into the Cardamom Mountains for some more trekking and adventure activities, or for some R&R and some more great food further down to the beach town of Sihanoukville.

With increased economic growth has come a huge improvement in the country’s infrastructure. Roads are in good condition, fine restaurants offer great cuisine and impressive hotels are springing up all over the country.

In Siem Reap and Phnom Penh the choices are endless. In Kep you have the absolutely wonderful and architecturally significant Knai Bang Chatt. In Koh Kong province, close the Thai Border, is the stunning 4 Rivers Resort – a unique floating luxury camp, exquisitely positioned at a bend in the Tatai River offering some of the most original accommodation anywhere in Southeast Asia. And if you really want to push the boat out on the private island of Song Saa you have one of the most amazing resorts in the region.

Added to that great guides can be found and the country is totally safe.

So almost three decades after Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge tore the country apart, Cambodia is finally immerging as one of Southeast Asia’s most exciting travel destinations.

5 Days Around Cambodia Episode 4 of 5

It's episode 4 of the Khmer Tourist family trip around Cambodia for 5 days from May 11th - 15th, 2019. This video started with a drone shot of Tsubasa bridge that link Kandal & Prey Veng province. We arrived Kien Svay Krao Natural resort to buy grilled chicken, grilled fishes, steamed snails, pickled cucumbers & papaya. We also bought ripe mangos as desserts as well. We moved to a small flower filed along Road 114 (Tiger Beer Road) in Kandal province to have lunch. It's a great and tasty picnic lunch. After lunch, we continued to New Takhmao bridge known as Prek Samrong bridge to Takhmao town and continued to Kour-Srov circle heading to National Road No.2. We took picture at entrance to Tonle Bati resort and bought some tropical fruits (Java Plum) in Takeo Province. We drove around Takeo town and continued to Kampot province to see ancient temple and ancient waterfall inside Wat Prasat. We visited Chne Angkol (Angkol beach) in Kep province, a tour in Kep town, the big crab statue, crab market and continued to the white horse circle. We need to eat as it's dark. We ate pancakes in Kampot and go camping at Veal Rinh high School at Prey Nob, Preah Sihanouk province. We enjoyed a great breakfast at Prey Nob, grilled chicken with rice and chicken curry noodle.
