The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday - Surf Passage Training

The U.S. Navy SEALs are the most elite combat unit in the world, whose core values embrace never quitting, and to do whatever it takes to pull your teammates through.

'The only easy day was yesterday' is a saying also embraced by the SEALs as meaning that every day you should work harder than the last, making the previous day seem easier. The saying is etched above the grinder at the BUD/S compound. BUD/S is an acronym for Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL. It is a 6-month SEAL training course held at the Naval Special Warfar Training Center in Coronado, California.

Before becoming Navy SEALs, candidates are put through some of the most mentally challenging and physically demanding training in the world. BUD/S is designed to find and develop those of the strongest character who give everything they have to accomplish their mission and support those on their team.

Demolition using explosives of Hydra Clarkson Works building on 06 June 2010

This is a re-edit of my earlier upload of this event here . (Basically I've removed two to three of minutes of superfluous material.)

Fortunately for me the really heavy rain held off 'til after I'd finished filming (and before the dew detector of my camcorder kicked in!).

In case you've come directly to this version, here's what I wrote for my earlier video ...

Some scenes at the demolition event of what has been a landmark building beside the river Don at Neepsend in Sheffield for many years.

(Incidentally, my first job was at Samuel Osborn's steel foundry - which used to be situated on Rutland Road just to the town side of this building. So the disappearance of this old friend will have a sadly nostalgic significance for yours truly.

Oh well, at least I was there for the final moments of this beautiful (???) building's existence!

Footnote - anyone interested can can get an idea what the other side of the building looked like and where it was (in relation to Sheffield town centre) in a supplementary video here ...

US Army Basic Training Fort Leonard Wood - 1986

Fun and nostalgic look at what basic was like before the cold war ended. One of those half canned, half original tapes that video companies use to make and sell to graduating soldiers. This was basic training class D-3-3. It was a mix of engineer, infantry, aviation, and MP MOSs. Started May of 1986.

Basic Demolition Training

Demolition training in the basics. Messing around with slow-motion videos. Yes, that was baby powder bottle... I didn't know where else to set it.

Basic Demolition & Protective Works

Basic demolition and protective works range. The first three detonations are training for EOD Technicians upon return from deployment. Immediately following three controlled explosions which are protective works detonations to present how EOD protects personnel and property when they are not afforded the opportunity of a local disposal area.
Honorable mention to Sgt Mahad Rasool (USMC) for accomplishing all the planning and coordination of this range.

Basic Training in WWII - Camp Wheeler

Did your father or grandfather take basic training during WWII at Camp Wheeler? Many soldiers did. It was reputedly the largest infantry training facility during the war. For a great many soldiers of those times, the recollection of Camp Wheeler no doubt brings back many memories.

Camp Wheeler, near Macon, Georgia, was a major Infantry Training Center for the Army. Great numbers of trainees went through Basic Training and Advanced Training at Camp Wheeler.

This short video includes some vintage postcard views of Camp Wheeler, accompanied with a few hit tunes of the time and a short clip from a Bob Hope radio show actually performed at Camp Wheeler in 1944. Sadly, after several months of searching on the internet, these postcards seem to be about the only existing pictorial record of Camp Wheeler.

Camp Wheeler was deactivated after WWII, and the property was sold to civilian interests. However, a viewer has advised that the Wheeler Heights neighborhood includes a lot of the old barracks buildings that have been repurposed into modern single-story homes.

To the young men who left their homes and families to take basic and advanced training at Camp Wheeler, recalling those times at Camp Wheeler no doubt brings back many good memories - and perhaps a few not so good!

Ask your father or grandfather to tell you about his experiences during WWII. You will learn a lot and it will probably be an enjoyable experience for the two of you to share.

Thanks to all the brave soldiers who served during WWII.
