TOP 10 Things to do in and around Paphos | Cyprus

Paphos embankment walking is miniature, everywhere you will find a stall with local goods, whether it offers sweets or souvenirs. Markets alternate with restaurants. The city embankment is not big, but the walking path continues further for 12 kilometers along the sea and all the hotels.

1:03 Paphos Archaeological Park represents remains of ancient city of Neo-Paphos founded by the Ancient Greeks. The city was entirely destroyed by earthquakes in the 4th century AD. Particularly valuable are the well-preserved mosaics of the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. They are in the house of Dionysus, which belonged to a wealthy Roman citizen and in the house of a Roman proconsul. Also in the park is a fortress of the Crusaders Saranta Kolones.

2:57 Blue Lagoone in resort village of Latchi, from which sea cruises depart to the Blue Lagoon of the Akamas Nature Reserve Park.

4:21 St. Paul’s Pillar is at the church of Ayia Kyriaki Chrysopolitissa. An ancient Roman forum was situated there, the ruins of which can be seen around the church. In 45 AD Apostle Paul visited Paphos and read his sermons here in this forum, for which he was seized by the Roman authorities and scourged at one of the marble columns.

5:46 Avakas Gorge Nature Trail is, perhaps, one of the most amazing hiking trails in Cyprus. You walk along an open picturesque path, and then you enter a narrow rocky canyon, which was formed by a mountain river over millions of years.

7:02 Tombs of the Kings is a large necropolis 2 kilometers from Paphos. The name derives from the splendor and decoration of the tombs, as there are in fact no kings buried in them. From the 4th century BC to the 3rd century AD, the crypts of the local aristocracy and high officials of ancient Paphos were located here.
Underground tombs were carved directly into the rock. Some of them imitate an ordinary house, while others are more like small palaces with their columned halls, frescoes and courtyards.

8:34 Shipwrecks: Edro III and Demetrios II. In December 2011, Edro III left Limassol in bad weather and headed for Rhodes with a load of drywall. At nightfall, strong winds and rough seas knocked the ship off its course. The vessel ran into underwater reefs 10 miles away from the coast, the engine failed and the cargo ship became uncontrollable. Edro III drifted like this all night, until, she was thrown onto the rocks in Paphos. Edro III will forever lie here, attracting tourists to the nearby Oniro By The Sea cafe.
10:38 Demetrios II ship was sailing with a cargo of timber from Greece to Syria. During heavy seas, the vessel ran aground 1 km away from the coast, where she has been to this day since 1998.

11:21 Aphrodite's Birthplace. Aphrodite was born from the waves and foam of the sea beating against this rock. In ancient times, the main center of worship of Aphrodite was in Paphos. Later, the Romans also called her Venus. According to another version, Aphrodite was born near Kithira island, when the god Uranus was cut by his son Kronos. The body of Uranus fell into the sea and the water began to foam. Suddenly, the most beautiful maiden came up from the foam and appeared on the surface.
The present name of Aphrodite’s rock is Petra tou Romiou, which means Rock of the Romans. It refers to the legend of a hero of the Eastern Roman Empire Digenes Akritas. Digenes threw down a huge stone in the direction of the Saracens invading the island. Therefore, another large rock is called the Saracen Rock.
13:17 Sea You Beach Bar is located a bit to the south of Coral Bay.

14:19 Agios Neophytos Monastery was founded in 1159 by the monk Neophyte the Recluse. When St Neophyte was returning from a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, he went to the deserted mountains near Paphos, where he settled in a small cave. He made a cell with a grave prepared for himself, and near the exit he placed an altar from a marble slab for worship. The cave is called Engleistra, which translates as a place of seclusion. Among the sights, there also are frescoes painted on the walls of the cave during the life of St Neophyte.

Aphrodite Water Park.
Aphrodite Waterpark is the biggest water park on this side of Cyprus. It is a popular place for families to go during the long summer days. It has 17 rides and attractions for kids of all ages, from toddlers to teens. There are four fast drops for people who want to get their adrenaline going. One of these is Racer, where you compete with your friends to see who can get to the bottom of the tube ride first.

Number 5. MEDIEVAL CASTLE OF PAPHOS Medieval Castle of Paphos.
This building, which stands at the mouth of the harbour, has had a very rough past. In the 1200s, the Lusignans, whose territory covered many places in the Mediterranean, added to what was already here, which was a Byzantine fortress. Later, the Venetians tore down the old fort, but when the Ottomans took over Cyprus, they built the castle you see today.

Number 6. APHRODITE'S ROCK BREWING COMPANY
Aphrodite's Rock Brewing Company.
When you think of Cypriot food, beer and ale might not be the first things that come to mind. However, the west side of the island has been making beer for thousands of years. This craft pub and microbrewery was the first one on the island. It is on a hill outside of Paphos and uses English brewing techniques to make a variety of real artisan ales.

Number 4. SIT DOWN TO A MAZA
Sit down to a Meze.
Meze is an appetiser or something to eat with a glass of wine in most of southern Europe. Mezes are a big meal in Cyprus, and they are often served at parties or other social events. At tavernas, tempting platters are served in a specific order. Olives come first, then bread and dips like tahini, taramosalata, humus, and skordalia.

Number 3. PAPHOS ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
Paphos Archaeological Museum.
From the Neolithic period to the 18th century, people lived in the western part of Cyprus. The artifacts on display came from as many as 15 archaeological sites, including old towns that were there before Paphos and Kouklia were built. When you look at the coins that were made right here in Paphos thousands of years ago, you'll get a real sense of where you are.

Number 2. ST. PAUL'S PILLAR
St. Paul's Pillar.
This is one of the most important places for pilgrims to visit in Cyprus. If you wanted to stay alive in 45 AD, it wasn't a good idea to try to bring Christianity to places that didn't want it. Paul the Apostle went to Paphos to try to get the ruler to stop being a pagan, and he got 39 lashes for his trouble. On the grounds of Panagia Chrysopolitissa, a beautiful Orthodox/Anglican church built on the site of an old basicila, you can see the pillar to which the saint was tied as a punishment.

Number 1. KATO PAPHOS ARCHAEOLOGY PARK
Kato Paphos Archaeology Park.
You could spend a lot of time wandering around this great place near the harbour. There are buildings here that date back to prehistory, but the most well-known ones are from the time of the Romans. In the ruins of four villas from this time, you can see mosaics that were made around the year 100 and show scenes from Roman mythology. The Ancient Odeon is a small arena from the same time period that is still used by the town as a place for performances. The Tombs of the Kings are an underground cemetery with Doric columns that are still in good shape and date back 1500 years.

Welcome to Cyprus!

On this road trip across the south coast of Cyprus, I’m exploring Cyprus’ most amazing destinations. I’ve done the research, and chosen these must-do activities that will help you plan the perfect trip. Right! It’s time to share with you 9 of the most fantastic things to do on this beautiful island.

The awesome power of nature is everywhere in Cyprus, and my first fantastic thing to do illustrates that perfectly - Avakas Gorge. Be sure to bring some comfortable shoes - there’s a short but lovely hike on the way to the gorge.

Okay, so this is the Avakas Gorge trail that we're going to follow. It's very hot, it’s very dry, we’ve dosed up on sun cream, got tonnes of water in the bag and got about a 2-3km trek to go and find the Gorge. So yeah, let’s get walking!

Like I said, it’s a popular tourist destination, so you can expect to see some tour groups on your walk. The tourist presence doesn’t ruin the appeal. A lot has been done to protect the area. It’s prohibited to pick any plants here, and animals roam freely. You’re completely surrounded by natural beauty.

The walk to the gorge sort of serves a double purpose. The blue sky, the lush green foliage - it sets you up for the shock of finally turning that corner and seeing the walls of the gorge.

The gorge is 3km long, and the walls reach up to 30 metres high. These sheer rock walls are so tall that you’re completely protected from the sun, and the cool breeze blowing through the gorge is so nice after a warm and sticky hike.

The river is low and calm under foot - but during the winter month, the river levels rise and the small stream becomes a torrent. This sense of danger isn’t just under foot- it’s also overhead.

So there's a rock here which is wedged between the cliff faces and it looks pretty ominous! Looks like it’s about to drop.

Beware that some of the mountain roads to get here can be quite tight and get busier as the day goes on. Something to note if you’re a nervous driver.

So here’s a bonus tip for you - right next to wonderful thing to do number 3 is a fantastic restaurant called Oniro By The Sea.

Fantastic food, refreshing cocktails, sea views - Oniro has everything, and I can’t recommend enough that you make it a stop on your trip and it’s just a stone’s throw away from our next destination. In fact, you can probably see it from your table.

It’s just a 5 minute walk from the restaurant at most - the shipwreck of the Edro III.

So that the Shipwreck behind me is quite a sight and it’s been here for just under 10 years now. So apparently back in 2011 it embarked for Rhodes, one of the Greek Islands.

But never made it, because it hit a freak storm and ended up being caught up on the rocks here just off the coastline.

So apparently people fled there, they made it safe, they took out the fuel as soon as they could, so that the oceans weren’t polluted and now? It makes for a rather nice photo opportunity as you can see down there.

I couldn’t help myself - I had to get closer to the ship. The rocks are very rough in places, but I’m so glad I did - getting just that little bit closer to the shipwreck was so awe-inspiring.

The clear water and crashing waves were hypnotising. But if you want even more bang for your buck, just 200 metres from the wreck are sea caves carved into the cliffs.

A great opportunity to walk down the lunch, take some gorgeous holiday pictures, and get one last look at the shipwreck before heading to your next destination.

Coral Bay Beach is widely regarded as one of the best beaches on the island. That’s right, it only took me three Things To Do until I wanted to hit the beach, and it’s the most visited beach on Cyprus’ West Coast.

It’s easy to see why - it’s got fine, white sand, calm, clear water - everything you’d want for a day in the sun. If you’re put off by seeing so many people here, don’t worry. I found an easy solution.

So yes, Coral Beach is a fairly obvious beach to come to, you’ve got your parasols your water sports, your deckchairs.

Paphos Archaeological Park | Cyprus tourist attraction

The park represents remains of ancient city of Paphos, founded by the Greeks shortly after the Trojan War in the 12th century BC. Historians call it Neo-Paphos. The city was entirely destroyed by earthquakes in the 4th century AD.

Here you can see the ruins of an amphitheater, a town square and entire streets with colonnades. Particularly valuable are the well-preserved mosaics of the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD.
They are in the house of Dionysus, which belonged to a wealthy Roman citizen. His estate was 2,000 sq. m² and occupied an entire block. The house had 40 rooms, 15 of which with mosaics based on ancient Greek and Roman mythology.

Other mosaics are in the house of a Roman proconsul. Perhaps they even belonged to Cicero, who was proconsul in Cyprus for some time. Be sure to read about mosaics on Wikipedia before visiting. It will be much more interesting if you understand their plot.
Also in the park is a fortress of the Crusaders Saranta Kolones, which translates as 40 columns. The Crusaders conquered the island in the Middle Ages. The fortress was built from ruins of an ancient city and stood until an earthquake in 1222.
