10 Best Places to Visit in Sri Lanka - Travel Video

Check out all the places seen in this video:

Sri Lanka may be a small island in the Indian Ocean but that’s the only thing small about it. The country, formerly known as Ceylon, boasts an ancient civilization, golden sandy beaches with their swaying coconut palms, mountains, and tea plantations. While visiting the island, you’ll see colonial architecture from the days when the Portuguese, Dutch and English ruled. You’ll also see lots of elephants, some of which participate in local festivals and, if you’re lucky, perhaps a leopard or two at a wildlife sanctuary. Here’s a look at the best places to visit in Sri Lanka:

10 Best Beaches in Sri Lanka - East/South/West Coast (Tropical Escape #2)

In this episode I show you the best beaches in Sri Lanka from the west coast over the south coast to the lesser know east coast - along the way we sample some street food and checkout the wildlife.
My Guide for Sri Lanka:

Sri Lanka is a year-round holiday destination with two monsoon seasons and is home to some incredible beaches on both sides of the island. If you want to go to the south and west coast of Sri Lanka the best time to visit is from December to April. For the east coast the time between April and August is best.

We start our journey in Beruwala and Bentota, this very long sand beach is without any doubt one of the most beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka and only a 2h drive from the capital. The next stops are the beaches of Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna close to Galle.

Further down south you can find Mirissa, a relaxed little town which is a popular starting point for whale watching, too. Afterwards it’s time to spot some wildlife in the Yala National Park which has also a beach...but swimming is not allowed, so we’ll go for a leopard safari instead.

The east coast of Sri Lanka is still fairly unknown, therefore I decided to show you this part of the island more in-depth starting with Arugam Bay, a popular surf spot. Pasikudah is a longer drive to the north which is totally worth it - the locals even state it is the most beautiful beach in Sri Lanka!

Our last stop is Trincomalee in the north east of the country with its wide beaches of Uppuveli and Nilaveli. A short boat ride off the main land you should visit Pigeon island which has not only a beautiful beach but an incredible maritime life…so make sure to bring some snorkeling gear!

This part of the trip was executed within 2weeks by using buses, trains, cars and a domestic flight (Trincomalee-Colombo) - following I list all the places I visited & Things to do on the coast of Sri Lanka:
- Beruwala
- Bentota
- Hikkaduwa
- Unawatuna
- Mirissa
- Yala & Yala National Park
- Arugam Bay
- Batticaloa & Kattankudy
- Kumana National Park
- Kudumbigala sanctuary
- Pasikuda
- Trincomalee
- Uppuveli
- Nilaveli
- Pigeon Island

Sri Lanka - Heart of the Indian Ocean

DIRECTORS NOTES:
Hey everyone. Kyle Vollaers here.
Last year I had the pleasure of traveling around Sri Lanka for two months and got to fully immerse myself in the natural beauty and culture of this incredible country. From the monumental views of Sigiriya Rock to the rolling tee fields of Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka left me speechless every day.

After Sri Lanka went through such a huge tragedy last year, it was truly inspiring to experience so much positivity and hospitality from the local people. I am very much looking forward to returning to Sri Lanka once we can all travel again, and I really hope you make the trip out to this spectacular place yourself. I hope that this film can take you there, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Let me know what you think in the comments below!

Sri Lanka: A Timeless Island Where You Can Still Find Your Own Peace and Quiet

Sri Lanka: A timeless island where ancient ruins whisper tales of the past, lush rainforests teem with life, and pristine beaches beckon you to relax and unwind.

As Sri Lanka emerges from its dark years, I'm among the first to find it’s ripe for rediscovery in 2023, like finding Kuta in Bali back in 1981.

***

During my last trip, when I backpacked the country for three weeks using only tuktuks, it lived up to its moniker. It looked and felt like a sacred jewel, placed delicately at the bottom of India (just 27km away), ready to be discovered. It had golden palm-fringed beaches, an easy-to-navigate train system, breathtaking mountain landscapes and a burgeoning coastal food scene unrivalled in the subcontinent. As I’ve written before, travelling to Sri Lanka in 2017 was like finding Bali in the 1980s.

So revered and so celebrated was its rapid rise back then that it was crowned the No. 1 place to visit by Lonely Planet in 2018.

This time, five years on, I arrived late in Colombo on a direct flight from Melbourne. As I passed through the metal detector of my Radisson hotel, this was the first sign the tone in the country had shifted.

Terrorist attacks on Easter Sunday in 2019, which targeted Catholic churches, heightened already shaky religious tensions. Ask any Sri Lankan, and they’ll tell you this day marked the start of the tourism downfall.

Then came the pandemic, followed quickly by an economic crisis, the worst since Sri Lanka claimed independence from the British in 1948.

I was fully prepared with this knowledge as I wandered the frenetic and messy Main Street of the Pettah area in the capital, but it was especially confronting when my first tuktuk driver almost ran out of fuel on our way home and had to limp us to the nearest service station. He explained he was still on fuel rations, like the rest of the country, and had miscalculated the distance.

But here at the Pinnawala Elephant Sanctuary, the chaos and hardship of Colombo has dissipated and made way for the rolling inland forests and mountains that this country is so famous for, and I’m cuddling up to Kumariya’s nearly 4000kg frame. There are 60 orphaned elephants alongside Kumariya at the sanctuary, and 20 more were born on the protected 24ha. Several different fenced-off viewing areas are available for tourists, but today there’s just one thing missing. Tourists.

I’m alone, except for the other two journalists and a travel agent on my tour. Because of our small group size, we’re secretly ushered down a private residential pathway by a mahout for a better viewing position. And as we reach the water’s edge, it is only me, Kumariya and the mountains. Magic.

At this moment, it dawns on me. In the age of Instagram, else would you get the chance to have such a raw and authentic travel experience? If this were Thailand or an African safari, there’s no way I’d be nose to trunk without a single other iPhone in sight.
