4K Drone Images of DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo)

Some shots I made on weekend- or holiday trips out of the big city Kinshasa.
Vast savannas, dense forests, big rivers, pretty waterfalls - only the nearby area of Kinshasa has so much to explore and enjoy and it`s just the top of the iceberg. Most of the country is not that easily accessible due to the lack of roads or airports.

Jungle Trekking & Gorilla Tracking in the Congo

Jungle trekking is the main attraction at Ngaga Camp and takes the form of both guided nature walks and active gorilla tracking. You walk out directly from the camp with your guide and tracker, who lead you through the cathedral-like rainforest and lush undergrowth, full of the chatter of unseen birds and insects. A hush descends when the tracker signals you to move cautiously and quietly: gorillas are near.

You slip quietly through the emerald shadows until the unmistakable black bulk of a lowland gorilla comes into view. It’s time to settle down and observe them: the gorillas are wild and uninhibited by your presence. They sunbathe, forage for roots and fruit, play and groom each other. Occasionally the silverback’s gaze flickers over you, making sure you don’t get too close or disturb his family.

As sweat bee’s fuss around your head net, you silently thank the camp manager for insisting you take one! But there are many moments when you simply close your eyes and soak up the sounds and scents of the planet’s second largest rainforest, alive with butterflies, monkeys, birds and chimpanzees.

Mountain Gorilla Trekking In Virunga National Park, Congo DRC | 2018

In late 2017, we traveled to Virunga National Park located in the Democratic Republic of Congo to track the incredible mountain gorillas.

Virunga National Park is one of only 3 places in the world where you can come face to face with mountain gorillas in the wild (Uganda and Rwanda are the other two). And although most travel advisories urged us to forego travel to the DRC, due to the unstable situation in the region, we choose to support the park, its rangers, and it's mountain gorillas by spending our tourist dollars on this incredible wildlife experience.

Thanks to the rangers, guides, and the wonderful staff at the Virunga National Park, our visit to the park was INCREDIBLE!

Hiking in the Grand Canyon of Africa - Simien Mountains (Ethiopia)

The Grand Canyon of Africa is located in the Simien Mountains National Park (Ethiopia).
In the middle of the rainy season we are trying to hike to Sankaber and Gitch camps following the edge of the Canyon. We are unsuccessful as the path is too muddy. However we have some interesting encounters: a band of Gelada baboons (monkeys) and a shoeless kid at 3150 meters!

Dzanga-Sangha Reserve in Bayanga, Central African Republic

The Dzanga-Ndoki National Park and Dzanga-Sangha dense forest special reserve are located in the rainforest in the south-western part of the Central African Republic, Congo Basin. They comprise a total area of more than 4 000 km2. The two central parts of the Reserve, the Dzanga and Ndoki Sectors, constitute the Dzanga Ndoki National Park, covering 495 km2 and 725 km2 respectively. The parks are part of the trilateral cross-boundary cooperation between the Central African Republic, Cameroon and Congo. WWF runs major campaigns and projects to support this cooperation to protect key rainforest areas in the Congo Basin, also as part of the Yaounde Process of 7 countries protecting their rainforest.

Crossing Congo

It is a deep dive into the heartland of Africa, into the mysterious Democratic Republic of Congo. A dream of many backpackers and often cited as a dangerous country to travel. Moving from A to B in the DRC is an adventure for outsiders and still challenge for locals and not everything is true about what comes into your mind for Congo. Yes, it still struggles for peace in its eastern region. The UN and other organizations trying to stabilize and support the country and as many refugees from other countries flood over the border, it is a challenge to be faced here. Despite all these efforts, for me Congo resembles still an authentic and real Africa off the beaten track. Rarely a visitor crosses into the DRC and while in Congo for little bit over three weeks, I only met two other travelers - excluding two fellow travelers I met just at the start of my journey.

Finding sights on a map of this huge country is a challenge, but reaching them is even harder. My adventure begins along the border to Rwanda, climbing an active volcano and with a visit to the famous mountain gorillas in the Virunga National Park. Continuing in Kisangani, the touristy sights almost vanish and a historical-shaded drift on the Congo River begins. Following the call of the jungle, I leave the river and take a hard daytrip over the washed-away infrastructure of the north-western Congo. While a boat ride may take a couple of more days, maybe even weeks, I head to Mbandaka by plane before finishing the journey in Kinshasa, the shiny, even too shiny, capital of the DRC.

The Grand Canyon of Africa

Peering out the window of a BushCat, out of nowhere, there is suddenly a gash in the skin of the continent. It's the Fish River Canyon, the Grand Canyon of Africa. In the midst of geological time, a seabed was lifted miles above the level of the ocean and weathered into ranges of table mountains. Then, some 500 million years ago, a fault opened up, widened by glaciation and altered by more faults, and wind erosion. Canyons within canyons formed until, 50 million years ago, a river began to flow.

Congo Trek: What to Expect

We heard that the jungle is not for ninnies, so we went into the green heart of Central Africa’s vast rainforest to find out for ourselves. Conditions are similar to Africa’s more famous tropical trekking destinations, like Uganda and Rwanda. Trekking anywhere is for rugged travellers - the heat, the insects and the terrain all test your commitment to adventure, but the rewards are exceptional, which is why a jungle trek belongs on your do-before-I-die travel list. What should you expect on a Congo jungle trek? To be delighted, frustrated, surprised and awed (sometimes all at the same time!). And that’s exactly what you should expect from a bucket list safari destination.
Next episode: Congo Gorilla Trek.

Aerial view of the hills of Congo

Aerial view of the hills of Congo. Democratic Republic of the Congo, country located in central Africa. Officially known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the country has a 25-mile (40-km) coastline on the Atlantic Ocean but is otherwise landlocked. It is the second largest country on the continent; only Algeria is larger. The capital, Kinshasa, is located on the Congo River about 320 miles (515 km) from its mouth. The largest city in central Africa, it serves as the country’s official administrative, economic, and cultural centre. The country is often referred to by its acronym, the DRC, or called Congo (Kinshasa), with the capital added parenthetically, to distinguish it from the other Congo republic, which is officially called the Republic of the Congo and is often referred to as Congo (Brazzaville). Congo is rich in natural resources. It boasts vast deposits of industrial diamonds, cobalt, and copper; one of the largest forest reserves in Africa; and about half of the hydroelectric potential of the continent.

4K | Blyde River Canyon in South Africa

In autumn 2016 I visited Blyde River Canyon located in South Africa. It is the world's third largest canyon after the Fish River Canyon and the Grand Canyon.

Congo Rainforest

Congo has the world's second largest rainforest (18% of the planet's remaining tropical rainforest). The Congo Basin represents 70% of the African continent's plant cover and makes up a large portion of Africa's biodiversity with over 600 tree species and 10 000 animal species. The Congo is one of the world's most threatened ecosystems. Commercial logging, clearing for subsistence agriculture, and widespread civil strife has devastated forests, displaced forest dwellers, and resulted in the expansion of the bushmeat trade. Millions of people across the region depend on the forest for food, medicine and shelter, and the cultures of many communities are founded on their relationship with the forest.
