Liechtenstein Travel Guide

Liechtenstein is the sixth smallest country in the world (roughly the size of Washington, D.C.). It has a historic castle, bustling downtown, vineyard, and some of the most memorable hiking in the Alps. Vaduz is the nation’s capital and where you will most likely start your Liechtenstein adventure. It’s the starting point for the Via Alpina ( and where you can get your passport stamped (at the Tourism Office). For the best hiking, you’ll head to the charming resort town of Malbun. Don’t forget to try the national dish of Käsknöpfle!

Liechtenstein (Europe) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Liechtenstein in Europe.
In the middle of the triangular border of Germany, Austria and Switzerland lies a treasure of the European Alps, the Principality of Liechtenstein. Hardly anywhere else in Central Europe has experienced such a rapid transformation from a dreamy agrarian state into one of the wealthiest countries in the world. Bendern, part of the village of Gamprin, is one of eleven municipalities and lies to the south-west side of the Eschner Mountain. The view glides across the foothills of the romantic Rhine Valley and up to the massive Swiss Schwäg-Alp. The Schaedler ceramics workshop in Nendeln is one of the oldest commercial enterprises in Liechtenstein and features handmade works of art. Since 1836, they have specialised in earthenware, exclusive ceramic art and tilted stoves. Schaan forms the border to the Oberland, a charming municipality with an attractive town centre. A parish hall and provision of good restaurants reflect the success of the global companies that are located there. Liechtenstein Castle looms majestically above Vaduz, the capital. Saint Florin is located on the edge of the old town it was built in 1868 in Neo-Gothic style and in 1997 officially dedicated as a cathedral. From the Sareiser Joch there are several trails along the ridge such as the Princess Gina Route that traverses various mountains of the border triangle. More than four hundred well marked hiking trails are offered throughout Liechtenstein, plus a hundred and sixty kilometres in the Alps. The Principality is a treasure trove of both landscape and culture with mountains, pastures, castles, fortresses and museums. But Liechtenstein has also become a small, modern state with a vital and indelible focus on finance and industry, a tiny paradise that is also an important economic power.

HISTORY Of Liechtenstein
ECONOMY Of Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein! Oh, Liechtenstein! What will I say about you, you gem of a micro country! The country Liechtenstein was named after a family who themselves were named after a castle they lived in in Austria, you guessed it right, the name of the castle was Castle Liechtenstein!

With its picturesque hiking trails, cute little city centre, and a ski resort town Liechtenstein is a perfect little country to add to your bucket list on your way to Switzerland. Three to five days should be more than enough to cover all the regions of this country. Allow me to briefly touch on the history of this beautiful tiny country.

Liechtenstein is the one and only remaining kingdom from The Holy Roman Empire and I'll tell you exactly how that happened. Once upon a time there was a Holy Roman Emperor called Joseph I and he suddenly died of smallpox in 1711 and unexpectedly his younger brother Charles 6th succeeded him and became the next Holy Roman Emperor who happen to have this random dude called Anton Florian of Liechtenstein as his Chief Intendant during the War of the Spanish Succession. So ofcourse Florian was there for Charles' coronation, the best buddies they were.
Now this Mr. Anton Florian couldn't be admitted to the Reichstag, which required that all members had land that was subordinate only to the Emperor as opposed to land held in fief by higher nobles. So, Anton Florian locally known as Anton Florian of Liechtenstein since he lived in a meideval castle in Austria called Liechtenstein Castle, bought some properties like the Lordship of Schellenberg and Count of Vaduz, and Charles 6th The Holy Roman Emperor decreed that Vaduz and Schellenberg be united and elevated to the dignity of Principality honouring his true servant Anton Florian of Liechtenstein, and thus came the Alpine country of Liechtenstein into existence, now being the only monarchy of the Holy Roman Empire that exists.

Watch the video for further information on this beautiful country. Hope this guide helps you to master your overall knowledge of Liechtenstein.

Mirza Columbus

After 2 years of saving $ and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this YouTube channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling! Vaduz Liechtenstein Travel Guide - Things to See an Do

Liechtenstein is a German-speaking, 25km-long principality between Austria and Switzerland. It’s known for its medieval castles, alpine landscapes and villages linked by a network of trails. The capital, Vaduz, a cultural and financial center, is home to Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, with galleries of modern and contemporary art. The Postmuseum displays Liechtenstein’s postage stamps.

Liechtenstein is bordered by Switzerland to the west and south and Austria to the east and north. It is Europe's fourth-smallest country, with an area of just over 160 square kilometres (62 square miles) and a population of 38,749. Divided into 11 municipalities, its capital is Vaduz, and its largest municipality is Schaan. It is also the smallest country to border two countries. Liechtenstein is one of only two doubly landlocked countries in the world, along with Uzbekistan.

Economically, Liechtenstein has one of the highest gross domestic products per person in the world when adjusted for purchasing power parity. The country has a strong financial sector centered in Vaduz. It was once known as a billionaire tax haven, but is no longer on any blacklists of uncooperative tax haven countries. An Alpine country, Liechtenstein is mountainous, making it a winter sport destination.

Liechtenstein is a member of the United Nations, the European Free Trade Association, and the Council of Europe. Although not a member of the European Union, it participates in both the Schengen Area and the European Economic Area. It has a customs union and a monetary union with Switzerland.
