La Paz, Bolivia – history, travel guide and things to do

La Paz is the seat of Bolivian government. The main points of interest are The Government Palace of Bolivia (Palacio Quemado), San Jorge district, Estadio Hernando Siles, Tiwanaku Square, Mercado de Brujas, Plaza Murillo, Calle Jaén, and Parque Urbano Central. The most important churches are the Metropolitan Cathedral and San Francisco Church.

You will see traffic zebras (cebrita) - a team of young people who dress in full-body zebra costumes with the goal of helping people to cross the busy streets of La Paz. A system of urban transit aerial cable cars called Mi Teleférico (My Cable Car) was opened in 2014, connecting La Paz and El Alto. The most interesting museums in La Paz are the National Museum of Archaeology, Museo de la Coca, and Museo de Textiles Andinos Bolivianos.

Things to do in La Paz, Bolivia (Travel Guide La Paz)

There are a lot of cool things to do in La Paz, Bolivia - I got in touch with Ben, who runs tours here and he gave me a City Tour in La Paz - the place where he was born an raised.

We took local transportation, ate Streetfood and visited local markets to get a real feeling for La Paz. It is one of these off the beaten path things you should do on your travels to experience a place off from the touristy things.

Moreover I was invited to do some rappel action in the middle of the center of La Paz: it is called Urban Rush and awaits you with a thrilling free fall after walking down a 50m Skyscraper - face first.

More options for things to do in La Paz?
What about biking down the death road - you can book the tours in the center e.g. with Gravity. See more about this option in another video I produced about this thrilling experience:

A Tourist's Guide to La Paz, Bolivia

We drive up from Lake Titicaca, to La Paz. We see the sights, including Plaza San Francisco and see the llama foetuses in the Witches' Market

Bolivia Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia

Bolivia – Welcome to the “Rooftop of the World” where you can experience breathtaking landscapes, ancient civilizations and colorful wildlife. Check out the best things to see and do in Bolivia.
When ready, browse vacation packages to Bolivia:

A #vacation to #Bolivia, a landlocked South American country, holds the promise of discovery for adventurous souls. While pretty Sucre is Bolivia’s judicial capital, La Paz is its political capital and also its main tourist hub.

Journey high to the Mirador Laikacota for city views. Deep in the valley below #visit the central Plaza Murillo, home to the most precious buildings: the Presidential Palace, National Congress and Metropolitan Cathedral. Stay near the Plaza San Francisco for its proximity to hidden gems, such as the curious Witches’ Market, the Musical Instrument Museum and the Coca Museum.

Bolivia is a diamond in the rough; relatively undeveloped, but extremely authentic, colorful and cultural. Bolivia’s riches shine through in the country’s high altiplanos, its floating reed islands on Lake Titicaca, the silver mines of Potosi, the infinite salt flats of the Salar de Uyuni and the untamed tropical lowlands in the vast Amazon basin.

For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.

NUMBER 10. CHACALTAYA SKI RESORT Chacaltaya Ski Resort
Chacaltaya Ski Resort was Bolivia's only ski area. It used to sit on a glacier that was 18,000 years old, but that glacier no longer exists. What was once the world's highest ski resort is now mostly gone because the glacier melted because of global warming. Since 2005, there hasn't been any skiing here. But the resort once had a great history. It was the first place in South America to have a funicular that took skiers to the top.
Number 9. PLAZA MURILLO
Plaza Murillo is the main square in La Paz. It is surrounded by government buildings, like the Presidential Palace, and a cathedral. From the 16th century on, the square in what is now called the old town was called the Plaza Mayor. In 1902, the name was changed to honor Pedro Murillo, a Bolivian leader who was hanged by the Spanish in 1810 during a rebellion for independence.
Number 8. WITCHES MARKETWitches' Market
When people go to the Witches Market, or Mercado de las Brujas, they might want to bring an amulet with them to keep away evil spirits. This isn't a normal market, unless you want to buy dried frogs or goat unborn babies, which are the market's specialties. As a gift to the goddess Pachamama, goat babies are buried in new homes and businesses.
Number 7.HUAYNA POY Huayna Potosi
Hikers and mountain climbers with a lot of experience may want to try Huayna Potosi, but only if they are used to being at high altitudes. This is the most popular place to hike in the area. It is about 24 km from La Paz. Hiking across glaciers is not a good idea for first-timers, but some have done it. The hike takes between two and three days, and the first day is used to get ready for the climb.
Number 6. Basilica of San Francisco
The Basilica of San Francisco was built a year before La Paz was built. In 1548, work began on the church, which was built in honor of St. Francis of Assisi. In 1610, heavy snow caused it to fall down. It took more than 170 years to rebuild. The art in the church is a mix of Bolivian native and Catholic styles. Its Baroque outside is decorated with symbols from the area, such as birds, snakes, and dragons.
Number 5. Calle Jaen
Near the Plaza Murillo, there is a cobblestone street called Calle Jaen that is thought to be the best colonial street in all of La Paz. Brightly coloured houses from the 1600s line both sides of the narrow street. The street is also made up of shops, cafes, and places to have fun. Some of the most important museums in La Paz are on Calle Jaen, which is named after the Bolivian revolutionary Apolinar Jaen.

Number 3. Cycle the Yungas Road
Named the most dangerous road in the world, The Yungas Road goes from La Paz to the northern part of Bolivia, where the Amazon rainforest is. From La Paz, the road goes up about 4,500 meters and then drops about 1,200 meters to reach the town of Coroico. The road is dangerous for cars, but mountain bikers love Yungas because they can ride 65 km downhill from La Cumbre back to the city.
Number 2. Day trip to Tiwanaku
Tiwanaku is one of the most important cities that came before the Inca Empire. It is 72 km west of La Paz and near the south-eastern shore of Lake Titicaca. Between the 7th and 9th centuries, the village grew into a city and became an important regional power in the southern Andes. At its peak, between 15,000 and 30,000 people lived in the city. Even though only a small part has been dug up, Tiwanaku is the most impressive megalithic building in South America before the Incas.

TOP 5 things to do in LA PAZ, Bolivia.

La Paz, the New 7 Wonders City! It has the world's coolest public transit system!
This place remains my favourite city to date, sitting at an elevation of 3460m above sea level. This is a South American must-hit destination.

La Paz is the administrative capital of Bolivia, while Sucre is the constitutional capital and the seat of the Supreme Court. La Paz was established in 1548, and is in the Andes. Altitude of the city ranges from about 4,058 m (13,313 ft) above sea level in El Alto (where the airport is located) to 3,100 m (10,170 ft) in the lower residential area. It is the highest national capital in the world.

The sight from the air as one flies into La Paz is incredible. First, one sees the sprawling shantytowns of El Alto, slowly giving way to the sight of La Paz itself, clinging tenuously to the sides of what looks like a large gash in the earth.

===================
Sagarnaga Street, (just south of Plaza San Francisco). La Paz' main tourist strip. It's mainly a market street with artesano and souvenir stores, but you'll also find budget hostels, tour and travel agencies, cafes, and lots and lots of backpackers. Don't be suckered by the roving sellers of trilobite-in-a-rock.

The Witches' Market, (Mercado de Hechiceria or Mercado de las Brujas). Calle Linares between Sagarnaga and Santa Cruz. Vendors sell llama fetuses and dried frogs for Aymara rituals, as well as soapstone figurines and aphrodisiac formulas. This street is also the best place to pick up a charango or other Bolivian musical instrument.

Calle Jaen. One of the few places in the city with preserved colonial buildings, currently housing several interesting museums.

The Valle de La Luna. Surreal, weathered rock. Just outside the town of Mallasa. 30-40 minute bus ride (depending on traffic) down the La Paz valley. Take local bus 43 to Mallasa (Bs 2.40), from San Francisco Plaza or Prado, mini-bus 273 or 902 (Bs 2.30 - 3), a taxi (Bs 35) or join a tour. The entrance to the park is located next to the flags and costs Bs15. Opening hours: 8 a.m - 5.30 p.m. UPDATE: As of Oct. 9, 2013, you can show up at the paradero near the Iglesia de San Francisco and Sagarnaga Street and jump on a combi/micro headed towards Mallasa and the cost is only Bs 2 per person.

The Thursday & Sunday Market in El Alto or Feria de 16 de Julio. A huge market held in El Alto every Thursday and Sunday. This mostly Aimara market is one of the world's biggest, and a person can find just about anything. The latest software and DVDs are practically free as are high quality used clothes, jackets, sweaters and everything else imaginable. For newbies, stick to the railroad tracks starting at the ceja and ending at Plaza Ballivian. Do not bring anything valuable (like camera or mobile phone) and keep your money (except small bills like 10's) inside your clothing. Bring sunblock. As a long time resident of Bolivia, this is one of my favorite pass times and the area where I have practically furnished my house, dressed my kids and bought plants for my garden. On fair days there are hundreds of mini buses leaving from the Prado.

The Self-guided Public Transport Tour. The best way to see the real La Paz is to jump on and off public transport minibuses and micros at random, go to the end of the line, turn around and jump off at any place that looks interesting. There is no way to get lost and each jump on and off costs about $US 0.15. Buy fruit and so on along the way and talk to people in the peripheral zones. Quite safe.

Lucha Libre de Cholitas, Polifunctional de la Ceja, El Alto (From San Francisco, take any mini-bus bound to Ceja and stop 200m after the autopista toll.), [1]. 4pm. The tourist entry ticket is pricier but includes some snacks and souvenirs. The show starts around 5pm with men fighting for the 1st hour before letting the Cholitas on the ring. You can go there with a tour or on your own with a mini-bus (Bs 2). Bs 50.
