DOMINICAN REPUBLIC | 7 Things To Know Before You Travel From United States (Cultural Differences)

Mariano (Yonny) and I love living in the Dominican Republic. I moved here almost 3 years ago and my husband was born here. Over the years, I noticed a few cultural differences. Of course, there are many more, but here are the seven most noticeable ones for me.

First, before you travel to the Dominican Republic you should know that people are very relationship oriented. It is the most important thing to keep friendships and be good friends to others. Therefore, everyone makes eye contact with each other everywhere they go.

Second, since many people are focused on building relationships and connecting with others, they don't necessarily believe in personal space. Which is perfectly okay with me. On the road or in line at the store, others are often very close to me and don't even question it anymore.

Third, people rarely make plans in advance. If you want to see a friend, you show up at their house. If you want to visit family members, you go and see them without any notice.

And finally, when entering any space, you are expected to greet the room. Not necessarily one person but everyone. However, only one person will usually answer or respond back. This one is difficult for me to get used to because I never did it growing up. But I am learning.

Life in the Dominican Republic is always interesting.

➡️Where to go in the Dominican Republic?
The capital, Santo Domingo, is one of the oldest cities in the New World, founded by Christopher Columbus in 1498. The Colonial Zone is a must-visit attraction here, boasting cobblestone streets lined with 16th-century buildings, such as the Catedral Primada de America (the first cathedral built in the Americas). You can also visit Parque Colon with life-size stone statues of Columbus' ships and Fuerte San Geronimo del Boqueron (Fort Ozama), which was built in 1502.
Other popular tourist destinations include Punta Cana, La Romana, and Puerto Plata. Punta Cana is one of the most famous beach destinations in the Caribbean and offers numerous resorts, golf courses, and other attractions. La Romana is perfect for those interested in exploring its historical sites, while Puerto Plata is a well-known all-inclusive resort destination since tourism began there in 1979.

????What to see and do in the Dominican Republic?
The Dominican Republic has something for everyone when it comes to activities. There are plenty of water sports, such as kayaking, snorkeling, and scuba diving in both marine and freshwater environments. On land, you can explore caves like Cueva de las Maravillas or go on a safari in Los Haitises National Park to observe its unique nature or visit nearby waterfalls like Salto El Limón. For culture enthusiasts, there are museums like the Museo Bellapart, which houses artifacts from pre-Columbian civilizations, or the Museo de Las Casas Reales, which showcases items from colonial times to the present day.

⌛How long is the flight from Poland to the Dominican Republic?
It depends on the chosen route, but typically covering the distance of 8333 kilometers between the two countries takes around 14 hours and 30 minutes. If a traveler opts for a non-stop flight, it takes about 11 hours and 55 minutes. However, travelers who choose connecting flights may have to wait several hours at the airport before their next departure. Thus, the duration of the journey largely depends on the options chosen by the individual to reach the destination country.

✅Interesting facts about the Dominican Republic:

• The Dominican Republic is home to 3 UNESCO World Heritage Sites - the historic colonial city of Santo Domingo, La Isabela (the first European settlement founded on American soil), and Los Haitises National Park, which features stunning mangrove forests and limestone caves carved by rivers over time.

• It is also home to Mount Isabel de Torres - a 2,600-foot-high mountain located near Puerto Plata, offering views of both sides of the Hispaniola island, accessible by cable car or hiking its trails.

• Baseball is by far the most popular sport - so much so that locals even call it el deporte nacional (the national sport).

• Every year during Easter, hundreds of people come to Higuey for the annual pilgrimage in honor of their patroness, Our Lady of Altagracia, with ceremonies including processions with traditional music and chants, followed by candlelight vigils at her sanctuary in the Basilica Cathedral Church Nuestra Senora de la Altagracia.

• Another peculiarity of this country is that it celebrates Independence Day twice - once on February 27th to commemorate independence from Haiti and again on August 16th to mark independence from Spain.
