The Earliest Place on Earth (full video): Kiribati

This is the Earliest Place On Earth. They made thier own time zone! They are first to experience a new day and new year. You can visit, but make sure it's the right day!

One of the strangest things about the Diomede Islands is that they are in different days despite being only 2.5 miles apart. Diomede is not the only place like that. There’s actually a chain of islands in the Pacific that has its own time, the earliest time on earth.

Kiribati (“Kiribas”) is a country made up of small islands in the pacific that is far away from most other places. Its islands are spread out over 1.4 million miles of ocean. From end to end its like going from Chicago to LA, but its total land is only about half the size of the city of LA. It’s actually the only country in the world that sits in all 4 hemispheres.

The country’s islands span across the international date line, so that means that different parts of the country are in different days. In an effort to sync business days for ppl working on both sides of the nation, in 1995, Kiribati moved the international date line around its islands. So instead of a 24-hour difference, they made 2 new time zones to put everything on the same day. That gave the farthest islands of Kiribati - called the line islands - the earliest time zone on earth. The 8000 people that live there are technically the first to experience a new day and the first to celebrate the new year.

They actually renamed one of the islands Millennium Island in honor of being the first to pass the new millennium.

The moving of the date line had some funky consequences. Other places nearby that share virtually the same sunrise and sunset, like Hawaii, are actually experiencing a completely different day.

Kiribati is a fascinating place for lots of other reasons too. It’s one of the world’s most endangered nations due to rising seas, so the government bought 5500 acres in Fiji to relocate its population. Yes, they bought land in another country to move their country. Let’s hope they don’t have to.

KIRIBATI: THE COUNTRY THAT'S DROWNING

“There are developing countries and endangered species. The Republic of Kiribati is a dying country. Lost in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, this little paradise seems destined to be swallowed up by global warming. A country which is afraid of disappearing, is in the process of buying land from its neighboring country in order to be able to move all its population there… The international negotiations on the climate are not advancing…”. These words are those of Julien Blanc-Gras, a globe-trotting journalist and writer, who has returned with a new book, his 4th, entitled 'Paradise before liquidation'. Here, he evokes a land endangered by climate change. In today's video, we are going to talk about the Kiribati Islands, an endangered country.

The history of Kiribati. Kiribati documentary. World Of Knowledge

Kiribati , officially the Republic of Kiribati , is an independent island nation in the central Pacific Ocean.

The permanent population is over 119,000 , more than half of whom live on Tarawa atoll.

The state comprises 32 atolls and one raised coral island, Banaba.

They have a total land area of 811 square kilometres and are dispersed over 3.5 million km2 .

Their spread straddles the equator and the 180th meridian, although the International Date Line goes around Kiribati and swings far to the east, almost reaching the 150° W meridian.

This brings Kiribati's easternmost islands, the southern Line Islands south of Hawaii, into the same day as the Gilbert Islands and places them in the most advanced time zone on Earth: UTC+14.

Kiribati is the only country in the world to be situated in all four Cardinal Hemispheres

Kiribati gained its independence from the United Kingdom, becoming a sovereign state in 1979.

The capital, Tarawa, now the most populated area, consists of a number of islets, connected by a series of causeways.

These comprise about half the area of Tarawa atoll.

Prior to its independence, the country had exported phosphate; however, those mines are no longer viable with fisheries and export of copra driving much of the economy.

Kiribati is one of the least developed countries in the world and is highly dependent on international aid for its economy.

Kiribati Travel Guide

Kiribati Travel Guide: Curving its way above and below the equator, the Republic of Kiribati (pronounced 'Kiri-bas') encompasses the Gilbert, Phoenix and Line Islands, and was known under British rule as the Gilbert Islands. Measured by land size Kiribati is a tiny nation of just over 810 sq km, but its 33 atolls span a huge 3.5 million sq km of the Pacific. Most atolls surround turquoise lagoons and barely rise above the surrounding ocean, so it's rare to be out of the sight and sound of the sea.

Kiribati's recent colonial and WWII history has had little impact on the outer islands, where the people subsist on coconuts, breadfruit and fish as they have done for centuries. Even on the main island, Tarawa, most locals live in traditional raised thatched huts. Western influence is increasing, though, in the form of cars, bars, movies and the Internet, and inevitably there's an escalating urban drift from the outer islands to Tarawa.

The people of the islands are known as I-Kiribati. Wide-eyed children may chirp a bold 'mauri' (hello) to passing strangers, while their elders tend towards a laconic raise of an eyebrow in greeting. Nothing happens fast here, so wind down, relax and enjoy living on island time.
