Best of Barbados for All Budgets

Get more Tips here!

Barbados is generally considered more of an upscale holiday spot than a budget travel destination. However, there’s a flip side to the island that can appeal to those without money to burn. So here are 10 contrasting choices of what to see and do in this Caribbean paradise.

1. West Coast of Barbados
Known as the “Platinum Coast”. This is where you’ll find ultra-chic establishments like Sandy Lane and The Cliff. In Holetown you’ll find the Limegrove Lifestyle Centre, an upscale shopping, dining and entertainment complex featuring top luxury brands.

2. East Coast of Barbados
The expansive strip along Cattlewash to Bathsheba is essentially undeveloped and unspoiled. You can walk for miles and rarely see another soul. It is an experienced surfer’s dream. Pack a picnic or have a bite at the historic Round House. It’s well worth the 20-30 minute drive.

3. Harrison’s Cave
Take a trolley tour deep underground through the crystallized limestone caverns. The tram makes a few stops so you get up close to the running streams and reflective pools. Harrison’s Cave also offers more adventurous subterranean tours.

4. Animal Flower Cave
A completely different (and cheaper!) cave experience. It’s not as deep and vast as Harrison’s Cave, but it’s equally as impressive in its own right. Take a dip in the indoor pool or check out the rock formations.

5. Cricket
Cricket is considered the national sport of Barbados. Even if you don’t know much about the game, its a worthy local experience. You’ll see casual games being played in community fields, beaches and streets all over the island.

6. Fine Dining
Barbados is a diner’s paradise. Popular favorites include Cin Cin, Champers, Daphne’s, Tapas and Zen, which cover a range of eclectic cuisines from all over the world. Their food is enhanced by the ocean-side setting, making every meal out a special occasion.

7. Fish Fry
On the other end of the spectrum is the traditional Bajan fish fry, where you can enjoy casual seafood and tasty side dishes in a fun yet relaxed atmosphere. The town of Oistins is the place to go on Friday or Saturday nights, it’s like dinner and a show, with an authentic local flavor.

8. Catamaran Sail
It is well worth a splurge. You can sun on the deck, sip a rum punch or two, enjoy a tasty Bajan buffet, and have a few dips in the Caribbean Sea. Most of the catamarans make a few stops so you can snorkel over shipwrecks and come face to face with the turtles.

9. Kite Surfing
The waves and breezes around Silver Sands are the place to go, and you’ll often see more than a few boarders flying along the waves. Try De Action Man to rent equipment and have a lesson down there. So if you’re in the mood for an exhilarating adventure when in Barbados, give kite surfing a go.

10. Stand Up Paddling
You may get wet in the beginner stage, but once you find your balance you’ll be good to go. Paddle hard for a core workout, ride a few waves, or take it easy with some gentle strokes. It’s like you’re walking on water, but if you lose your center you might end up literally soaking in the scenery.

Which one would you like to try?

Barbados - 25 interesting facts - Relaxation Film With Calming Music

Barbados is a state located on the island of the same name in the Atlantic, east of the Lesser Antilles chain. The head of state is the Queen of Great Britain, represented by the Governor General. About 90% of the country's population are blacks and mulattos. Among the whites, the descendants of the English colonists stand out. The official language is English. The capital of Barbados is Bridgetown.

Some interesting facts:
1. Barbados owes its name to the Portuguese word barbados, meaning bearded. The navigator who discovered the island considered that parasitic plants that overwhelm local trees are very reminiscent of bushy beards.
2. The stress in the word Barbados is placed on the second syllable.

5. From the beginning of the 17th century until independence in the middle of the 20th century, Barbados was part of the overseas possessions of Great Britain.
6. Nominally, the head of the country is the Queen of England, but de facto, the governor leads the country on her behalf.

11. One fifth of the entire budget of Barbados is spent on education.
12. In the list of developing countries, Barbados ranks fourth in the world in terms of growth rates.

17. Such a fruit as a grapefruit appeared in Barbados.
18. There are a huge number of flying fish in the waters of Barbados.

21. Barbados has the third oldest parliament in the world. It has been in operation since 1639.
22. In 1846, there were 491 active sugar planters and 506 windmills in Barbados.
23. The country's national flower is called Pride of Barbados. Leaves of this flower soaked in breast milk are given to crying babies to keep them from crying.
24. The capital of Barbados, Bridgetown, and its garrison are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is a well-preserved old town built in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.
25. Barbados is the only Caribbean island with daily flights to Canada, England and the United States of America.
