20 Things to do in Santiago, Chile City Guide | Top Attractions Travel Guide Travel Video Transcript:

Santa Lucia is an urban park smack dab in the middle of Santiago and it’s a popular hangout in the afternoons and weekends. The hike is a pleasant one with lots to see, including fountains, spiralling staircases, defensive forts, sprawling gardens, and cool lookout points.

Lastarria is a neighbourhood located just east of Santa Lucia hill and it was once the bohemian hub of the city.Today it is very popular with tourists as it offers an outdoors flea market, an international mix of cafes and restaurants, & live music.

For panoramic views of the city, ride the funicular to the top of San Cristobal Hill.

Plaza de Armas is the heart of Santiago’s historic centre. There are lots of benches under the cover of palm trees, and the place is buzzing with activity. The Metropolitan Cathedral is located in the historic centre of Santiago overlooking the square. The construction you see today dates back to the year 1800, since previous cathedrals were destroyed in earthquakes.

Santiago’s Central Market is the place to come for the freshest food. You'll find rows of restaurants serving up everything from grilled fish to ceviche. We really like our ceviche, so we found a place serving exactly that.

Parque Forestal is a park that forms a long stretch of greenery along the Mapocho River. It’s a nice green escape in the middle of the city.

Palacio de la Moneda is the seat of the President of the Republic of Chile. This is where you can come to watch the changing of the guard. Just underneath Palacio de La Moneda, you’ll find Centro Cultural Palacio La Moneda, which is a cultural centre featuring exhibitions, design shops, and a small selection of cafes.

Bellavista is a cultural hub with lots of theatres, cinemas, cafes, museums, and restaurants. The most famed home in the neighbourhood is La Chascona, the home of the famed Chilean poet Pablo Neruda.

And that's a wrap for the Chilean capital! We hope you enjoyed this Santiago travel guide and that it gave you a few ideas of things to do, places to visit, and Chilean dishes to try in the city.

The places to see in Ecuador I focussed on in this short video are the result of my own travels along the center from north to south and are easily doable in 2 weeks time.

Top 10 Places to visit along the Carretera Austral, Chile

In this video guide I summed up my personal top 10 places to visit along the Carretera Austral in the most beautifula part of Chilean Patagonia

The Carretera Austral is a mostly unpaved road that connects the most rural part of Patagonia in the very south of Chile. Tourism in this area is not as pronounced as it is in other parts of the country, as regular bus routes, accommodations and detailed info is hard to find.

But in this seclusion lies the attraction and a special charm. During my last trip I met very few travelers from Europe and North America. The locals welcomed me warmly and most attractions were not crowded.

After traveling this route twice via hitchhiking I thought it is about time that I put together a handy Carretera Austral guide which highlights the main sights along this 1200km long road. The video shows you my favorite places to visit from north to south, starting in Puerto Montt and finishing in Villa O’Higgins.

To do the Ruta 7 properly I recommend about 2 weeks - following I list all the places I visited & Things to do along the Carretera Austral:
- Fjords, Hornopiren, Pumalin Park, Chaiten
- Queulat National Park, Queulat Glacier, Puyuhuapi
- Rio Futaleufu, Futaleufu
- Cerro Castillo, Villa Cerro Castillo
- Marble Caves & Lago General Carrera, Puerto Rio Tranquilo

10 Best Places to Visit in Argentina - Travel Video

With jaw-dropping scenery, abundance of exotic wildlife, colonial towns and cities rife with superb cuisine and vibrant culture, it is no wonder that Argentina is a popular travel destination. Located in the southern region of South America in a large, elongated shape, Argentina was sparsely inhabited by a few indigenous tribes before Spain’s colonized it in the 16th and 17th centuries. Today, the country is an independent republic featuring varied landscapes from rich plains to thick jungle, majestic mountains, pastoral steppes and impressive glaciers. An overview of the best places to visit in Argentina.

Top 10 Attractions in Santiago DE Chile !! Top Tourist Place✓

Top 10 Attractions in Santiago de Chile !! Top Tourist Place✓

10 Top Attractions in Santiago de Chile
Santiago de Chile, more commonly known as just Santiago, was founded by the Spanish in 1541, and has served as Chile’s capital since the colonial days. It’s a bustling city of more than six million people, but you’ll still find traces of its heritage in the colonial and 19th century neoclassical buildings. This scenic city has several hills that tower above it, with the Mapocho River flowing through it and the Andes Mountains in the background. There are a variety of tourist attractions in Santiago de Chile, from the religious to the quirky and funky.

10. La Moneda
La Moneda, also known “Coin Palace” because it used to be a mint, is where the president of Chile has his offices. Several other key government officials also have offices in the neoclassical structure that takes up a whole block in downtown Santiago.

9. Museum of Memory and Human Rights
Chile’s record of human rights hasn’t always been stellar, hence the Museum of Memory and Human Rights. Only open for a few years, the museum is a memorial to Chileans who had their rights violated during the Pinochet regime (1973 – 1990).

8. Gran Torre Santiago
The Gran Torre Santiago towers over Santiago and is so high it can be seen from just about anywhere in the city. At 64 stories high, it is the largest skyscraper in Latin America and the highest occupied floor in the Southern Hemisphere.

7. Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino
The Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino, or Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art, has items dating as far back as 10,000 years. It covers Pre-Columbian art not only from Chile, but from the rest of South America and Central America as well.

6. Cerro Santa Lucia
Cerro Santa Lucia is a hill in central Santiago that represents the remains of a 15-million-year-old volcano. The hill was originally called Huelen but was renamed in 1543 in honor of Santa Lucia when the Spanish conquistadors took the hill.

5. Mercado Central
While the Mercado Central sells other food, the seafood is the main reason you go there. Here, you’ll find a variety of seafood fresh from Chile’s long coastline: fish, oysters, mussels, scallops, clams and a whole lot more.

4. La Chascona
Noted Chilean poet and Nobel literature prize winner Pablo Neruda had three houses, of which La Chascona is one – the others are in Valparaiso and Isla Negra. Neruda had a quirky personality that is reflected in this house.

3. Barrio Bellavista
Barrio Bellavista is where it’s all happenin’, baby. This Santiago neighborhood is the city’s bohemian quarter, a place where artists and intellectuals live, work and play.

2. Santiago Metropolitan Cathedral
Where earlier cathedrals in Santiago have been destroyed by earthquakes, the Santiago Metropolitan Cathedral has stood on the Plaza de Armas for more than 260 years. Construction first began in 1748 and the cathedral has dominated the square ever since.

1. Cerro San Cristobal (Where to Stay)
Cerro San Cristobal is a hill in northern Santiago that rises over the city, providing some pretty great views. Spanish conquistadors named it for Saint Christopher. At the top you’ll find an observatory and a statue of the Virgin Mary, part of a sanctuary dedicated to the Immaculate Conception.

12 Natural Wonders of South America

South America is filled with incredible sites from the tallest mountains to caves so beautiful you won't believe they're real.

Subscribe to Talltanic

6. Atacama Desert
Excluding the poles of our planet, the Atacama Desert is the driest place on Earth. One of the ways people defines a desert is to look at the region's average rainfall. Experts consider an area a desert if it receives less than 25 centimeters of rain annually. The Atacama Desert receives less than one-tenth of a centimeter of rain each year. Some regions of the area haven’t seen rain in hundreds of years. The area saw an unprecedented 31 inches of snow when an Antarctic cold front made its way through the area in July 2011. The desert covers a 600-mile strip of land that stretches from the southern border of Peru up to the northern parts of Chile.

5. Aconcagua
While ascending this mountaintop is not considered technically difficult when compared to other mountains like Mount Everest, Aconcagua is still well respected in the climbing world. The summit of the mountain is 22,841 above sea level, making it the highest mountain and, by extension, the tallest point outside of Asia. While the way to the top is nothing more than a walk, the extremely high altitude of the mountain makes the climb difficult and potentially dangerous. Of the 3,500 or so people that attempt the treck annually, there are always those that underestimate the climb and pay for it with their lives. This wonder formed when the Nazca Plate and the South American Plate collided during the Andean orogeny.

4. Salar de Uyuni
You have most likely seen the Salar de Uyuni on TV without even realizing it. Located in Bolivia, Salar De Uyuni is the world’s largest salt flat and is a sought out destination for those making car commercials. While it is best to film commercials in the area during the dry season from April to October, it is perhaps more visually stunning to visit the flat in the wet season when the rain changes the ground into the world’s largest mirror. Spanish cinematographer Enrique Pacheco shot a stunning time-lapse video of the area last year titled “Reflections from Uyuni.” The video does a fantastic job of exploring the fabulous reflections that the salt flats produce.

3. The Marble Chapel
For centuries no one knew how the Marble Caves of Chile retained their state of incredible beauty and extravagance, so they came up with their own legends. The Maori people explained that the multi-colored stones and giant crystals found within the cave were the result of a mythological canoe wreck. Irish stories claim that a massive worldwide quarrel amongst gods led to the formation of the natural wonder. Scientists were eventually able to come up with a factually based explanation. The progression of time combined with wave erosion have shaped the caves into their current state. The reflective blue-green water of Carrera Lake, which the Marble Caves lie in, substantially enhances the amazing colors found in the cave.

2. Ojos del Salado
At 22,615 feet this massive stratovolcano is the highest active volcano in the world and barely trails the Aconcagua peak for being the highest point in the western hemisphere. Luckily this massive volcano hasn’t erupted for roughly 1300 years. The volcano’s easy ascent has made it an attractive destination to set altitude records in vehicles. In April of 2015 Chilean Gianfranco Bianchi set the altitude record for motorbikes when he went 21,233 feet up the mountain on a Suzuki RMZ 450. This region also contains the world’s highest lake regarding elevation. The Ojos del Salado Pool lies 20,997 feet high on the eastern side of the wonder.

1. Iguassu Falls
Visiting these waterfalls located on the border of Argentina and Brazil will leave you with drop jaw syndrome. Not only are these falls the largest system of waterfalls in the world, but they are also visually stunning. You have to visit this site to understand its majesty, using words and seeing pictures is futile. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt put it best when she said, “Poor Niagara,” upon first seeing Iguazu Falls. Iguazu Falls retain this reputation over its rival in the U.S. to this day. While Niagara Falls has seen casinos and Starbucks crop up around it, Iguazu Falls remains a spot surrounded totally by nature. Clearly, Niagara Falls has to stop trying so hard.
