Women mourning at Muharram

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. It is one of the four sacred months of the year. Since the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, Muharram moves from year to year when compared with the Gregorian calendar.

The word Muharram means Forbidden and is derived from the word harām, meaning sinful. It is held to be the most sacred of all the months, excluding Ramadan. Some Muslims fast during these days. The tenth day of Muharram is the Day of Ashura, which to Shia Muslims is part of the Mourning of Muharram.

Azadari procession carried out by Shia Muslims in Indian city of Hardoi on the Day of Ashura.

Some Muslims fast during this day, because it is recorded in the hadith that Musa (Moses) and his people obtained a victory over the Egyptian Pharaoh on the 10th day of Muharram; accordingly Muhammad asked Muslims to fast on this day that is Ashura and on a day before that is 9th (called Tasu`a).

Fasting differs among the Muslim groupings; mainstream Shia Muslims stop eating and drinking during sunlight hours and do not eat until late afternoon. Sunni Muslims also fast during Muharram for the first ten days of Muharram, or just the tenth day, or on both the ninth and tenth days; the exact term depends on the individual. Shia Muslims do so to replicate the sufferings of Hussein ibn Ali on the Day of Ashura.

According to Shia sources, The Azadari of Muharram was started by the family of Muhammad (the Ahl-ul-Bayt) after the death of Muhammad's grandson Husayn ibn Ali at the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. Following the battle of Karbala, Muhammad's granddaughter Zaynab bint Ali and sister of Husayn, began mourning for the fallen and making speeches against Husayn ibn Ali's opponents: Ibn Ziyad and Yazid I. News of Husayn ibn Ali's death was also spread by Imam Zain-ul-Abideen, who succeeded Husayn as the Shia Imam, via sermons and speeches throughout Iraq, Syria and Hejaz.

Zainab and Zain-ul-Abideen informed the people that Yazid had martyred Imam Husayn and seventy-two of his companions including his six month old son Ali Asghar, and that their women and children were taken as prisoners to Syria. When word of mourning reached Yazid he decided to release the captive women and children from the prison in Damascus, out of fear of public revolt against his rule. He sent for Zain-ul-Abideen, informed him of the impending release and asked if he wished for anything further. Zain-ul-Abideen said he would consult with Zainab. She asked Yazid to provide a place where the people could mourn for Imam Husayn and others of Muhammad's household. A house was provided, and here Zaynab binte Ali held the first Majlis-e Aza of Husayn and started the Mourning of Muharram.

On the 8th day of Rabi' al-awwal the third month of Islamic calendar, Chup Tazia is observed by the Shia muslims of India and Pakistan. This procession of Chup Tazia marks the end of the mourning procession that begins in the Islamic month of Muharram.

The procession of Chup Tazia originated in Lucknow. It was started by Nawab Ahmed Ali Khan Sahukat Yar Jung during the Nawabi era. It is one of the most crucial processions of Azadariin Lucknow. On this date the colossal black tazia is carried out in procession and finally buried. The Shia Muslims light candles and say prayers remembering the sacrifices of Hussein. As the tazia arrives, groups of men perform the ritual of maatam before the Tazia. These groups of men performing maatam walk on burning coals, beat themselves with chains and knives and also beat their chests while mourning for Hussein.

At the end of the process the black Tazia is buried and the Shia Muslims shower the grave with flowers and prayers.

Muharram: The day of mourning for Shia muslims

A large numbers of worshipers come together in pray on the day of Muharram to mourn the sacrifice of Ahlul Bayt and testify to their absolute bravery.

In India, there is great diversity of religious beliefs and practices. Throughout India's history, religion has been an important part of the country's culture. Here, every religion is respected and its followers freely practice their faith. Among the various religions in India, Islam has the second largest following, constituting 14.4% of the entire country's population with a staggering 176 million muslims in the country.

This vast Muslim population of the country observes various Islamic festivals in accordance with their faith. Muharram is one such festival of the Muslim community and commemorates one of the greatest events in the history of Islam - the martyrdom of the Prophet's grandson, Hussain. The event marks the anniversary of the Battle of Karbala when Imam Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, and a Shia Imam, was killed by the forces of the second Umayyad caliph Yazid the first. On this day, one can observe many a 'majalis' or gathering to review Islamic teachings and to commemorate Imam Hussain's sacrifice. This day is referred to as the day of Ashura.

Sunnis also observe this day but as the day of a victory for Islam. They fast to commemorate the day when Moses or Musa and his followers were saved from the Pharaoh by Allah as he parted the Red Sea to let the faithful through.

According to Islam, Muharram is the first month of the Islamic Calendar. But instead of joyous celebrations, Shia Muslims mark the beginning of the New Year by mourning the death of Hussain. On this day, the sacrifices of Hussain and his companions are remembered. Muharram is one of the most sacred Islamic months, second only to Ramadan.

Shia Muslims begin mourning from the first night of Muharram and continue thus for ten nights. The tenth day of Muharram is the Day of Ashura. There is lamenting and grieving to the tune of beating drums and chants of Ya Hussain.

To express their grief on the death of Hazrat Imam Husain, they beat their chests. Others flagellate their bodies with chains or whips, consisting of small knives and sharp objects, drawing blood.

The Muharram procession passing through the streets of major Indian cities is a strange and fascinating spectacle verging on the bizarre, for although the accompanying music sounds like a funeral dirge, it takes time for one to realise that the participants are mourners not revellers.

Why Muslims cut moustache in Hindi/Urdu ? | मुस्लिम मूंछे क्यूँ कटवाते हैं ? | Mano Ya Na Mano

Why Muslims cut their mustache?

Holy place of Shia Muslims: Shia Jama Masjid

Shia Jama Masjid is located at Kashmiri Gate, Delhi.

In Muharram one of the oldest processions is taken out from Shia Jama Masjid in Kashmiri Gate to Punja Sharif Karbala in the same locality

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. It is one of the four sacred months of the year. Since the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, Muharram moves from year to year when compared with the Gregorian calendar.

Muharram is so called because it is unlawful to fight during this month, the word is derived from the word haraam, meaning sinful. It is held to be the most sacred of all the months, excluding Ramadan. Some Muslims fast during these days. The tenth day of Muharram is the Day of Ashura, which to Shia Muslims is part of the Mourning of Muharram.

Some Muslims fast during this day, because it is recorded in the hadith[citation needed] that Musa (Moses) and his people obtained a victory over the Egyptian Pharaoh on the 10th day of Muharram; accordingly Islamic prophet Muhammad asked Muslims to fast on this day that is Ashura and on a day before that is 9th so that they are not similar to Jews (since, according to him, Jews used to fast for one day due to the same reason, and many practices recorded in the hadith are specifically performed to avoid any apparent similarity to those of contemporary neighbouring Jews and Christians). Many Muslims cook something sweet like sweet rice and distribute it throughout their family and circle of friends to eat when breaking their fast.

Fasting differs among the Muslim groupings; mainstream Shia Muslims stop eating and drinking during sunlight hours and do not eat until late afternoon. Sunni Muslims also fast during Muharram for the first ten days of Muharram, or just the tenth day, or on both the ninth and tenth days; the exact term depending on the individual. Shia Muslims do so to replicate the sufferings of Hussein ibn Ali on the Day of Ashura. Shia Muslims go further in their replication, including self-flagellation.
