Sony A7s 2 Raja Ampat - Behind the Scenes
Have a look Behind the Scenes as the Underwater Tribe takes the Sony A7SII to the incredible underwater wonderland of Raja Ampat. We joined the Mermaid II liveaboard for 8 nights to discover this amazing destination both above and below the water. Komodo in 4K (Underwater footage from the Sony A7s and Atomos Shogun)
For those with a 4k screen and decent internet speeds, here's a short 4K (UHD) clip from a week long trip from Komodo, Indonesia with the Komodo Dancer (Ombak Biru). I was testing the wide angle capabilities of the A7s/Shogun combo with the Sony FE 16-35 lens in a Nauticam housing and the 180mm dome.
Komodo offers some of the most amazing scuba diving found anywhere. The coral reefs are incredibly healthy and vibrant (the most healthy I have seen anywhere in a long time). The amount of fish life I witnessed was stunning. The dive sites vary offering both macro and wide angle opportunities. As this was a test of the wide angle setup, I have only included clips shot with the 16-35 lens.
Sadly, I was on a short one week trip and only had the opportunity to dive signature sites once each. I highly recommend going for much longer. Once isn't enough at many of these sites!
The Sony performed well. I was able to shoot at much higher ISOs than I normally would and had plenty of flexibility to use different shutter speeds and apertures. My only gripe was obtaining a custom white balance with the camera underwater. I would get errors often and the color space/tint would need to be further fine tuned (thankfully, there is an option to do that). However, in many cases, UW Auto White Balance was extremely usable! The only time I had problems with it was the occasional shift in color mid shoot when the UW Auto WB would attempt to compensate because of changing conditions. I will need more wide angle dives to test settings.
The Sony FE 16-35 is absolutely superb! Combined with the Nauticam 180mm optical glass dome, I had a much more compact setup compared against most DSLR systems. This is definitely the go-to lens for wide angle video work.
Finally the Shogun. I can't tell you how awesome it is to shoot video using such a large monitor. I never felt that the setup was too bulky at any point. With the 180 dome, carbon fiber arms, Fisheye's Fix Aquavolt 7000 and the Nauticam tray and mounting system, the entire rig was a just little negative in the water. I would have preferred it if the monitor was a little further forward though. Perhaps Nauticam could make optional replacement handles that sat a little further back and tilts forward so that the record lever can still be reached.
One thing to remember with external recording though. The camera can only output via the HDMI-out without any overlay in the MOVIE mode. In this mode with Sony lenses, continuous AF kicks in no matter what setting you use. Thankfully, the transitions are smooth while maintaining a reasonable speed.
Oh, did I mention, a 1tb SSD only holds 2.5hrs of UHD video in Prores HQ format? :P

외국에 나가면 짬을 내어 여러 곳의 바다를 찾았지만 가장 좋은 곳은 역시 제주도 서귀포 바다이다. 내 고향, 내 어머니가 그렇듯이 깊고 넓은 데다가 서귀포 바다의 속은 그 어느 곳보다 아름답다.

한국 다이빙의 메카인 서귀포 앞바다는 연중 다이버로 넘칩니다. 계절에 따라 각양각색의 물고기들이 들어차는 문섬의 새끼섬은 그중의 백미라 할 수 있습니다. 새끼섬은 고운 색의 호와 다양한 종류의 물고기 뿐만 아니라, 화산이 만든 절벽과 바위 틈세에 살고 있는 무수히 많은 '작은 생명들' 의 집이기도 합니다. 제주 접사 시리즈의 첫번째 영상입니다.
이번 영상은 기존의 A7 카메라가 아닌 RX100 카메라를 이용하여 촬영했습니다. 2018.9.1 - 9.8 동안 열리는 똑딱 2.5 You can compact 라는 전시회에 참석하기 위함입니다.
좋은 성능의 풀프레임 미러리스 카메라와 정확한 초점을 잡을 수 있었던 외장 모니터를 내려둔 채, 컴팩트 카메라를 잡아보니 그 느낌이 무척 새로웠습니다. 불편했지만, 가벼웠고, 한계가 있었지만 피사체에 더 가까이 다가갈 수 있었습니다. 수중 생명체들은 대포 카메라를 선호하는 까다로운 클라이언트라기 보다, 수줍음이 많아 카메라만 보면 뒤로 숨는 어린 아이들과 닮았기 때문입니다.
좋은 성능의 기계에 집착하는 촬영가보다는, 내가 표현하고 싶은 것을 적절한 도구를 이용해 현할 수 있는 촬영가가 더 낫다고 생각합니다. 컴팩트 카메라는 그 단순함을 무기로 삼아, 렌즈 교환식 카메라가 접근하기 어려웠던 피사체에 개성있는 각도로 다가갈 수 있음을 느낄 수 있었습니다.
PS) RX100은 제품 라인의 4번째 카메라인 Mark 4 부터 4K 화질의 영상을 촬영할 수 있습니다. 일부 장면은 Mark 3의 Full HD 영상이며, 일부 장면은 Mark 4 의 4K 영상입니다. 조금만 눈여겨 보시면 이내 차이를 발견하실 수 있을 겁니다. 그만큼 영상에서의 화질은 결과물에서 큰 차이를 만들어 냅니다.

올해 5월 제주 바다가 너무 좋아서 제주로 이사를 오게 되었습니다. 서귀포 앞바다 문섬, 섶섬 일대에서 조금씩 모아둔 영상으로 만들었습니다. 다소 흐리던 시야는 온대간대 없고, 맑은 물과 따듯한 수온으로 편안한 다이빙을 즐길 수 있는 요즘, 바다는 온갖 고기들로 가득 찼습니다. 전갱이와 멸치 무리가 섬 주변을 가득 채우고 있으며, 포식자인 방어, 부시리, 참돔 등은 호시탐탐 사냥의 기회를 노립니다.

Lembeh is an island off the north east coast of Sulawesi near the town of Bitung. Lembeh Island is 25km long and 2km wide. Lembeh Island is separated from the mainland of Sulawesi by a narrow stretch of water known as the Lembeh Strait.
The Lembeh Strait is World known for its extremely high density of rare and unusual marine life, in particular frogfish, rare species of octopus, seahorses and nudibranchs.
Lembeh Strait is a favourite destination for experienced scuba divers and underwater photographers from all over the World.
Due to the protected geographical features of Lembeh Strait the diving is great throughout the year and dives are never cancelled due to bad weather.
인도네시아 술라웨시섬의 북부에 위치한 렘베섬은 렘베 해협에 의해 술라웨시섬과 나뉘어져 있다. 렘베 해협에는 엄청난 밀도의 특이한 누디브랑크, 해마, 문어 등의 생물로 널리 알려져 있다. 지형적 이유로 바다는 1년 내내 잔잔하며, 전세계 스쿠버 다이버와 사진가들의 매력적인 목적지이다.

Panglao Island, located just southwest of Tagbilaran, is famous for its diving locations and is routinely listed as one of the top ten diving locations in the world. Bohol is now becoming increasingly famous in the scuba diving community. Indeed, the diving there is really interesting and varied. This destination is great for many things like the Coral, the numerous Pelagic fishes and Reef Sharks you can encounter as well as for superb wall dives.
보홀, 팡라오 섬에 위치한 돌호 해변은 발리카삭과 파밀라칸등의 유명 포인트에 가려진 곳입니다. 하지만 경험 많은 다이버들은 돌호 지역을 보홀에서 가장 근사한 스쿠버 다이빙 포인트로 꼽습니다. 얕은 수심에 넓게 펼쳐진 경산호화 연산호의 밭은 기후 변화에 따른 생존의 위협을 힘겹게 이겨내고 있습니다. 각양각색의 안티아스와 크로미스 무리들이 산호 지역 전체에 걸쳐 분포하며, 어린 잭피쉬와 롱 죠드 메케렐 무리가 멋진 직벽을 따라 나타났다 사라짐을 반복했습니다. 이번 영상에서는 보홀의 숨겨진 보석인 돌호 지역을 담아보았습니다.

GoPro and Sony A7R underwater video comparison
This is a comparison test between the Sony A7R and a GoPro Hero3+ Silver with a red filter mounted to a coldshoe on the A7R housing. Dive site depth is 105fsw.
Sony A7R is in a Meikon underwater housing and is using the 28-70mm lens, no color filter, automatic underwater white balance. GoPro is using the standard underwater housing and the Backscatter flip Dive filter.
No lighting was used and no color correction was applied in post processing.
